1. What is Sociology? |

Sociology is the scientific study of society, social behaviour, social institutions, and the relationships between individuals and groups. Unlike psychology, which focuses on the individual mind, sociology looks at how social forces shape people’s lives.

Sociologists ask questions such as: Why do some groups have more power than others? How does family background affect educational success? What makes social change possible? By collecting evidence through research, sociologists try to move beyond common-sense assumptions and understand patterns in society.

A key aspect of sociology is the idea that individual choices are shaped by the social contexts we are born into, such as class, gender, and ethnicity. This perspective is often called the ‘sociological imagination’, a term coined by C. Wright Mills.

2. Socialisation | 社会化

Socialisation is the lifelong process through which individuals learn the norms, values, customs, and roles expected in their society. It begins at birth and continues throughout life. Through socialisation, we learn how to communicate, how to behave in different situations, and what is considered right or wrong.

Primary socialisation happens within the family, where young children first learn basic language, emotional bonds, eating habits, and safety rules. Parents and caregivers are the main agents of primary socialisation.

Secondary socialisation takes place outside the family, in institutions like schools, peer groups, workplaces, and the mass media. These agencies teach us more complex social skills and reinforce the values of the wider society.

Without effective socialisation, it would be difficult for society to maintain order, as individuals would not share a common set of expectations about how to behave.

3. Culture and Identity |

Culture refers to the whole way of life of a group of people, including their language, beliefs, values, norms, customs, dress, food, and art. Culture is learned and shared, passed down from generation to generation. It gives people a sense of belonging and identity.

Cultural diversity exists both within a single society and between different societies. For example, the UK is a multicultural society with influences from many different ethnic groups. Subcultures are groups within a larger culture that have their own distinct norms and values, such as youth subcultures based on music or fashion.

Identity is how we see ourselves and how others see us. Aspects of identity include gender, ethnicity, social class, age, and nationality. Sociologists are interested in how our identities are shaped by the social groups we belong to and how these identities influence our life chances.

4. Family and Household |

The family is a fundamental social institution found in all societies. It is commonly defined as a group of people related by blood, marriage, or adoption who live together and support each other emotionally and economically. A household, on the other hand, may consist of a single person or a group of unrelated people living together.

There are many different family forms. The nuclear family consists of two parents and their children. The extended family includes grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins living together or in close contact. Other forms include lone-parent families, reconstituted families (stepfamilies), and same-sex parent families.

Sociologists study how families have changed over time, for example, the increase in divorce rates, the rising number of cohabiting couples, and the growing acceptance of diverse family structures. Functionalists see the family as performing essential roles such as primary socialisation and emotional support, while feminists often highlight gender inequalities within families.

5. Education and Schools |

Education is the process of transmitting knowledge, skills, values, and culture from one generation to the next. In modern societies, schools are the main formal institutions of education. However, education also takes place informally through family, peer groups, and the media.

From a functionalist perspective, education serves to socialise young people into society’s shared norms and values, to prepare them for future work roles, and to select and allocate individuals into appropriate jobs based on ability (meritocracy).

However, conflict theorists such as Marxists argue that education often reproduces social inequality. They suggest that the education system may favour children from wealthier backgrounds, who have access to more cultural capital and better resources, while working-class students may face hidden barriers to success.

Key concepts in the sociology of education include the hidden curriculum (the informal lessons taught through school routines), labelling, streaming, and the self-fulfilling prophecy, which can all affect a student’s educational achievement.

6. Social Stratification |

Social stratification refers to the way society is organised into hierarchical layers, with some groups having more wealth, power, and status than others. The main systems of stratification include class, caste, and slavery. In modern industrial societies, social class is a key form of stratification.

Social class is often measured using occupation, income, and wealth. The Registrar General’s scale, for example, divides occupations into broad groups such as higher managerial, intermediate, and routine occupations. Sociologists debate whether class boundaries have become blurred or whether class still strongly determines life chances.

Stratification can also be based on gender and ethnicity. Patterns of gender inequality exist in pay (the gender pay gap), domestic labour, and representation in politics. Similarly, ethnic minority groups may face discrimination in employment, housing, and the criminal justice system.

Sociologists aim to explain why such inequalities persist and how they are reproduced across generations, often drawing on concepts like social mobility and cultural capital.

7. Crime and Deviance |

Deviance refers to behaviour that goes against the accepted norms or expectations of a society. Not all deviance is criminal; for example, wearing unusual clothing might be seen as deviant but is not illegal. Crime is a specific type of deviance that breaks a formal law and is punishable by the state.

Official crime statistics are collected by the police and other agencies, but sociologists are cautious about these figures because many crimes go unreported or unrecorded. Alternative sources include victim surveys and self-report studies, which can reveal the “dark figure” of crime.

Sociological explanations of crime vary. Functionalists argue a certain amount of deviance can be functional for society by reinforcing boundaries. Strain theory, developed by Merton, suggests that crime occurs when there is a gap between societal goals and the legitimate means to achieve them. Subcultural theories explain crime as a collective response to blocked opportunities. Labelling theory, from the interactionist perspective, focuses on how being labelled as deviant can create a self-fulfilling prophecy leading to a criminal career.

8. Mass Media |

The mass media refers to communication technologies that reach a large audience, including television, radio, newspapers, the internet, and social media platforms. The media plays a powerful role in shaping public opinion, spreading culture, and providing information.

Sociologists examine both the content of media and its effects on audiences. The hypodermic syringe model suggests that media messages are directly injected into passive audiences, which can be used to spread propaganda or create moral panics. However, newer approaches, such as the uses and gratifications model, argue that audiences are active and use media for their own purposes, such as entertainment, information, and personal identity.

Issues of media ownership and control are central to the sociology of media. When a small number of companies own the majority of news outlets, concerns arise about bias, lack of diversity in viewpoints, and the commodification of news. The rise of citizen journalism through digital platforms has, to some extent, challenged traditional media power.

9. Research Methods in Sociology |

Sociologists use systematic research methods to collect and analyse data about social life. These methods can be broadly divided into quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative research collects numerical data that can be used to identify patterns and correlations, often through surveys or official statistics.

Qualitative research, on the other hand, aims to gain an in-depth understanding of people’s experiences, meanings, and motivations. Methods include participant observation, in-depth interviews, and case studies. These provide richer, more detailed data but are harder to generalise to a wider population.

Key considerations in research include validity (whether the research measures what it claims to measure), reliability (whether the findings can be replicated), representativeness (how well the sample reflects the wider population), and ethics (protecting participants from harm, gaining informed consent, and ensuring confidentiality).

The choice of method often depends on the research question, practical constraints (time, money), and the sociologist’s theoretical perspective. Positivists tend to favour quantitative methods, while interpretivists prefer qualitative approaches.

10. Key Sociological Perspectives |

Sociology is not a single unified discipline; it includes several major theoretical perspectives that offer different ways of understanding society. The three classical perspectives are functionalism, conflict theory (including Marxism and feminism), and interactionism.

Functionalism views society as a complex system made up of interdependent parts (institutions) that work together to maintain stability and social order. It emphasises the importance of shared values and consensus. Key thinkers include Émile Durkheim and Talcott Parsons.

Conflict theories, such as Marxism, see society as based on conflict between different social classes. Marxists argue that the capitalist system benefits the bourgeoisie (ruling class) at the expense of the proletariat (working class). Feminism focuses on gender conflict, examining how patriarchal structures create and maintain inequality between men and women.

Interactionism, also known as social action theory, shifts the focus onto small-scale, everyday interactions between individuals. Interactionists argue that society is constructed through people’s interpretations and meanings. Labelling theory, mentioned earlier, is an interactionist concept.

These perspectives are not mutually exclusive; many contemporary sociologists combine insights from different traditions to explain complex social phenomena.
