1. Forces and Motion |

Forces describe interactions that change the motion or shape of an object. The three foundational terms to grasp are force, mass, and weight.

Force: A push or pull acting on an object, measured in newtons (N). A force can make an object speed up, slow down, change direction or deform. Remember: Force starts with an F, like a finger giving a push. Unbalanced forces cause acceleration.

Mass: The amount of matter in an object, measured in kilograms (kg). Mass is a scalar quantity and stays the same everywhere in the universe. Memory trick: think of a 1 kg bag of sugar – its mass is the same on Earth, on the Moon or floating in space.

Weight: The force of gravity acting on a mass, also measured in newtons. On Earth, weight is calculated by Weight = mass × gravitational field strength, or W = m × g (g ≈ 9.8 N/kg). Your weight changes with gravity, but your mass stays constant. Recall: Weight is the reading on a weighing scale.

2. Energy Stores and Transfers |

Energy exists in different stores and can be transferred between them. The key stores you must know are kinetic energy, gravitational potential energy and thermal (heat) energy.

Kinetic Energy (KE): The energy an object has because of its motion. Any moving object – a rolling ball, a running person – has kinetic energy. It depends on mass and speed. Formula: KE = ½ × m × v². Memory: “Kinetic” sounds like “kicking” – think of kicking a football to give it motion energy.

Gravitational Potential Energy (GPE): Energy stored in an object because of its height above the ground. The higher the object, the more GPE it stores. Formula: GPE = m × g × h (mass × gravity × height). Picture a roller coaster at the top of a hill – it has maximum potential to fall.

公式:GPE = m × g × h(质量 × 重力场强度 × 高度)。

Thermal Energy: The total kinetic energy of all the particles inside a substance. The hotter an object, the more its particles vibrate or move, so the higher its thermal energy. Memory: Thermal is linked to thermometer – both measure heat-related energy.

3. Waves and Sound |

Waves transfer energy without transferring matter. Three essential wave properties you need to memorise are amplitude, frequency, and wavelength.

Amplitude: The maximum displacement of a point on a wave from its rest position. In a sound wave, greater amplitude means a louder sound. Memory: Amplitude helps amplify the sound – imagine a speaker cone moving further back and forth to make a louder noise.

Frequency: The number of complete waves passing a point per second, measured in hertz (Hz). High frequency sounds have a high pitch (like a whistle); low frequency sounds have a low pitch (like a drum). Memory: Frequency equals how frequent the waves arrive.

Wavelength: The distance between two corresponding points on adjacent waves, such as crest to crest or trough to trough. It is usually measured in metres. Memory: It is literally the length of one complete wave.

4. Electricity and Circuits |

Electric circuits allow charge to flow. The three central quantities you must distinguish are current, voltage (potential difference), and resistance.

Current: The rate of flow of electric charge, measured in amperes (A). In a single closed loop, the current is the same everywhere. Memory: Think of current like water flowing in a river – the flow rate of water is similar to the flow rate of charge.
