In statistics, data can be categorical (qualitative) or numerical (quantitative). This skill is a direct stepping stone to the more formal treatment of grouped data in GCSE Statistics.

The height of each bar represents the frequency. Always remember to label both axes and give the chart a title – marks are often given for these features in Edexcel assessments.

Drawing pie charts accurately requires a protractor and careful rounding of angles, making them an excellent way to practise handling fractions, decimals and angles together.

Line graphs are used to show how one variable changes over time, such as temperature recorded each hour. The horizontal axis usually represents time, and consecutive points are joined with straight line segments. This helps you spot trends, but remember that between the plotted points you can only interpret the trend, not exact values unless the data is continuous and reliable.

This concept feeds directly into the GCSE topic of bivariate data, where you will learn about more formal correlation coefficients and regression lines.

Each has its strengths – the mode is quick for categorical data, the median is unaffected by outliers, and the mean uses every piece of information. Understanding when to use each is just as important as being able to calculate them.

At GCSE, you will meet more sophisticated measures of spread, but a firm grasp of range now will make that transition smoother.

In KS3, you will work with equally likely outcomes, such as rolling a fair dice or picking a card at random, and calculate probabilities using the formula:

You should also question the source of the data and ask whether a chart presents a fair picture. These habits of critical thinking are exactly what Edexcel examiners reward in the higher‑band answers.
