1. Revenue and Profit |

Total Revenue = Selling Price per Unit × Quantity Sold
Revenue is the total income a business receives from selling its goods or services. It does not take any costs into account.

Profit = Total Revenue − Total Costs
Profit is what remains after all costs have been subtracted from revenue. A business must earn a profit to survive and grow in the long run.

2. Costs: Fixed, Variable and Total |

Total Costs (TC) = Fixed Costs (FC) + Variable Costs (VC)
Fixed costs stay the same regardless of output (e.g. rent, insurance). Variable costs change directly with the level of production (e.g. raw materials, packaging).

Average Cost (or Unit Cost) = Total Cost ÷ Quantity Produced
This shows how much it costs to make one unit on average. Businesses use it to set prices and monitor efficiency.

3. Break‑Even Analysis |

Break‑Even Point (units) = Fixed Costs ÷ (Selling Price per Unit − Variable Cost per Unit)
The break‑even point is the number of units a business must sell so that total revenue equals total costs – making neither a profit nor a loss.

Contribution per Unit = Selling Price per Unit − Variable Cost per Unit
Contribution shows how much one unit contributes towards paying fixed costs and then generating profit.

Margin of Safety = Actual Sales − Break‑Even Sales
The margin of safety tells you how far sales can fall before the business starts making a loss. It can be expressed in units or as a percentage.

4. Profit Margins | 利润率

Gross Profit = Sales Revenue − Cost of Goods Sold (COGS)
Gross profit measures how efficiently a business turns raw materials and direct labour into sales income, before deducting overheads.

Gross Profit Margin (%) = (Gross Profit ÷ Sales Revenue) × 100
This percentage shows the gross profit earned for every pound (or yuan) of sales. A higher margin usually indicates stronger pricing power or lower production costs.

Net Profit = Gross Profit − All Other Expenses
Net profit is the final profit after all operating expenses, interest and taxes have been deducted. It is often called the ‘bottom line’.

Net Profit Margin (%) = (Net Profit ÷ Sales Revenue) × 100
This ratio shows what percentage of sales revenue is left as net profit. It helps compare performance across different periods or businesses.

5. Market Share and Market Growth |

Market Share (%) = (Firm’s Sales ÷ Total Market Sales) × 100
Market share represents the percentage of an entire market’s sales that one business controls. It is a key measure of competitiveness.

Market Growth (%) = [(Market Size This Year − Market Size Last Year) ÷ Market Size Last Year] × 100
Market growth tells you how quickly the overall market is expanding or shrinking. Growing markets offer more opportunities for sales but may also attract new competitors.

6. Demand and Supply |

The Law of Demand: When the price of a product rises, the quantity demanded tends to fall, and vice versa – assuming all other factors remain equal. This inverse relationship is shown by a downward‑sloping demand curve.

The Law of Supply: When the price of a product rises, the quantity supplied tends to increase, as producers are more willing to offer goods for sale. This positive relationship is shown by an upward‑sloping supply curve.

Equilibrium Price is the point where demand equals supply. At this price there is neither a shortage nor a surplus, and the market clears naturally.

7. Price Elasticity of Demand (PED) |

PED = (% Change in Quantity Demanded) ÷ (% Change in Price)
Price elasticity of demand measures how sensitive consumers are to a change in price. If PED is greater than 1, demand is elastic (responsive); if less than 1, demand is inelastic (less responsive).

Products with many substitutes, or luxury items, tend to have elastic demand. Necessities and addictive products often show inelastic demand. Businesses need to know PED when deciding whether to raise or lower prices to increase total revenue.

8. Cash Flow Forecasts |

Net Cash Flow = Total Cash Inflows − Total Cash Outflows
A cash flow forecast estimates the money a business expects to receive and pay out over a period. Positive net cash flow means more money is coming in than going out, which is vital for day‑to‑day survival.

Closing Balance = Opening Balance + Net Cash Flow
The closing balance of one month becomes the opening balance for the next. A business must avoid a negative closing balance, as that indicates an overdraft or liquidity problem.

A typical cash flow forecast table looks like this:

Month Jan (£) Feb (£)
Opening Balance 5,000 4,200
Cash Inflows 8,000 9,500
Cash Outflows 8,800 7,300
Net Cash Flow −800 2,200
Closing Balance 4,200 6,400

9. Business Objectives and Stakeholders |

Although not a formula, the hierarchy of business objectives is a vital concept: businesses often move from survival (covering costs) to profit maximisation, then to growth and sometimes social responsibility. Different stakeholders – owners, employees, customers, suppliers, the local community – may have conflicting objectives.

Stakeholder mapping helps a business prioritise its actions by considering the interest and power of each stakeholder group. Managing these relationships is essential for long‑term success.

10. Exchange Rates | 汇率

Value in Foreign Currency = Amount in Home Currency × Exchange Rate
When a UK business sells to the USA, it must convert pounds into dollars. If £1 = $1.25, then £1,000 becomes $1,250.

Home Currency Equivalent = Amount in Foreign Currency ÷ Exchange Rate
Conversely, converting dollars back to pounds uses division. Exchange rate fluctuations affect import costs, export competitiveness and the final profit reported in the home currency.

11. Productivity and Efficiency |

Labour Productivity = Total Output ÷ Number of Employees
This measures the average output per worker. Higher productivity can lead to lower costs per unit and higher profits, provided quality is maintained.

Capacity Utilisation (%) = (Actual Output ÷ Maximum Possible Output) × 100
Capacity utilisation shows how fully a business is using its resources. Very high utilisation can strain equipment, while very low utilisation means fixed costs are spread over fewer units, raising average cost.

12. Breakeven Chart and Decision‑Making Techniques |

A breakeven chart visually plots total costs and total revenue against output. The point where the two lines intersect is the breakeven point. The area between the revenue line and total cost line to the right of the breakeven point represents profit; to the left, it represents loss.

Other useful decision formulas include:

Return on Investment (ROI) (%) = (Net Profit from Investment ÷ Cost of Investment) × 100
ROI helps assess how effectively a business is using its money. It is widely used when comparing different investment opportunities.

Employee Retention Rate (%) = (Number of Employees Staying ÷ Total Number of Employees at Start) × 100
A high retention rate suggests satisfied staff, which reduces recruitment and training costs.

Using a combination of these formulas and concepts will help you analyse business performance and make reasoned judgements in your KS3 OCR assessments.
