1. Stage Directions and Areas |

Stage directions are always given from the actor’s perspective when facing the audience. ‘Centre stage’ is the strongest position, while ‘upstage’ is the area farthest from the audience, and ‘downstage’ is nearest. ‘Stage left’ and ‘stage right’ refer to the actor’s left and right.

‘Blocking’ is the term for planned movement on stage, including entrances, exits, and crosses. Directors use terms like ‘cross downstage right’ to indicate moving diagonally towards the front right corner. Understanding blocking notation helps actors follow precise directions during rehearsals.

Areas also include ‘wings’ (sides of the stage hidden from audience view), ‘apron’ (the part of the stage extending in front of the curtain line), and ‘backstage’ (all areas behind the stage). The ‘fly tower’ above the stage holds scenery that can be lowered.

2. Vocal Skills and Terminology |

Vocal skills are how you use your voice to convey meaning. ‘Projection’ is the ability to be heard clearly without shouting, using breath support. ‘Articulation’ means shaping words with precise tongue and lip movements, while ‘diction’ is the choice and clarity of words. ‘Pitch’ is how high or low your voice is, ‘pace’ is speed, and ‘tone’ reflects emotional quality.

‘Volume’ controls loudness; ’emphasis’ stresses key words to change meaning. ‘Pause’ is a deliberate silence for effect. ‘Intonation’ patterns can turn a statement into a question. ‘Accent’ may define character or region. Record yourself to practise using these elements independently.

3. Physicality and Gesture |

Physical skills bring a character to life without words. ‘Body language’ includes posture, stance, and unconscious signals. ‘Gesture’ is a movement of the hands or head to communicate meaning, while ‘facial expression’ reveals emotions. ‘Eye contact’ can establish relationships or tension.

‘Proxemics’ is the use of space between performers – close proximity suggests intimacy, while distance indicates conflict or coldness. ‘Levels’ refer to how high or low an actor’s body is, often conveying status: high level for power, low level for weakness. ‘Gait’ is a character’s way of walking, revealing age, health, or attitude.

4. Characterisation and Role |

Characterisation is the process of creating a believable role. ‘Hot-seating’ is a technique where the actor, in role, answers questions from others to deepen understanding. ‘Thought-tracking’ allows characters to speak their inner thoughts aloud during a frozen moment or slow-motion sequence.

‘Role-on-the-wall’ involves drawing an outline of a character and writing internal feelings inside and external facts outside. ‘Improvisation’ is spontaneous acting without a script, used to explore situations. ‘Given circumstances’ are the background details (who, when, where) that ground a performance.
