1. Map Scale | 比例尺
Map scale expresses the relationship between a distance on the map and the corresponding distance on the ground. It can be presented as a statement (e.g. 1 cm represents 1 km), a linear scale bar or a representative fraction (RF) such as 1:50 000.

2. Straight-Line Distance | 直线距离
To find the straight-line distance between two points on a map, measure the distance with a ruler in centimetres and apply the scale. The formula for ground distance is:

Ground Distance = Map Distance × Scale Factor
The scale factor is the denominator of the representative fraction. On a 1:50 000 map, a measured 4 cm line gives 4 × 50 000 = 200 000 cm, which is 2000 m or 2 km. Always convert the final answer into a sensible unit such as metres or kilometres.

When measuring the winding course of a river or a road, use a piece of string or the edge of a piece of paper. Mark the turns, straighten the string, measure its length against the ruler and then apply the scale factor. This gives a reasonable estimate of the curved distance.

3. Six-Figure Grid References | 六位数网格参考
Six-figure grid references locate a point within a 100 m by 100 m square on Ordnance Survey maps. The golden rule is “along the corridor and up the stairs” – eastings first, then northings.

Procedure:
1. Identify the two-digit easting number on the left of the grid square.

3. Repeat with the two-digit northing below the square to obtain the sixth digit.

4. Measuring Area on a Map | 地图面积测算
The area of a feature on the ground can be estimated from its map outline. Because scale applies to length, area scales by the square of the scale factor. The relationship is:

Ground Area = Map Area × (Scale Factor)²

Convert to m² by dividing by 10 000 (since 1 m² = 10 000 cm²), which gives 375 000 m². It is often easier to convert the ground equivalent of 1 cm into metres first: 1 cm = 250 m, so 1 cm² = 62 500 m²; then 6 × 62 500 = 375 000 m².

An alternative method for irregular shapes is to overlay a grid of small squares (e.g. 1 cm × 1 cm). Count full squares, combine part-squares into whole ones, and multiply the total number of squares by the ground area each square represents.

5. Compass Bearings | 罗盘方位角
A compass bearing is the clockwise angle measured from true north (000°) or grid north on a map. Bearings are always given as three figures, e.g. 045° for north-east, 225° for south-west.

Bearing = Clockwise angle from North (000° to 360°)
To measure a bearing on a map, place a protractor with its centre over the starting point and the 0° mark pointing to grid north. Read the angle where the line to the destination crosses the protractor scale. If the line points backwards, measure the acute angle and adjust: bearing = measured angle if forward, or add/subtract 180° if measuring the opposite direction.

6. Vertical Exaggeration | 垂直夸大
When drawing a cross-section from a contour map, the vertical scale is often enlarged to make relief features visible. Vertical exaggeration (VE) expresses how many times the vertical scale is larger than the horizontal scale.

VE = Vertical Scale ÷ Horizontal Scale
Both scales must be expressed as representative fractions or as a unit ratio. If the horizontal scale is 1:50 000 and the vertical scale of the cross-section is 1 cm represents 100 m (i.e. 1:10 000), then VE = (1/10 000) ÷ (1/50 000) = 5. This means the heights are stretched five times, making slopes appear steeper than they really are.

Gradient compares the vertical change in height to the horizontal distance between two points. It is often expressed as a ratio 1:N or as a percentage.

Gradient = Vertical Interval (VI) ÷ Horizontal Equivalent (HE)
Vertical Interval is the difference in height between two contours or points. Horizontal Equivalent is the ground distance between them, measured along a straight line. Both must be in the same unit. If a hilltop rises 120 m over a distance of 600 m, Gradient = 120 ÷ 600 = 0.2, which simplifies to 1 in 5 (1:5). Always write the ratio with the vertical interval as 1.

Gradient can also be given as a percentage: multiply the decimal result by 100. In the example above, 0.2 × 100 = 20 %. In geography, steeper slopes have higher gradient percentages and smaller second numbers in the ratio.

8. River Discharge | 河流流量
River discharge is the volume of water passing a given point in the channel each second. It links the channel’s cross-sectional area and the flow velocity.

Discharge (Q) = Cross-sectional Area (A) × Velocity (V)
In the field, velocity is measured with a flow meter or float, and cross-sectional area is calculated by multiplying channel width by average depth. All measurements must be in consistent metric units: area in square metres (m²), velocity in metres per second (m/s), giving discharge in cubic metres per second (cumecs, m³/s).

Population density describes how crowded an area is, calculated as the number of people per unit area, usually per square kilometre.

Population Density = Total Population ÷ Area (km²)
Make sure the area is in square kilometres. If the area is given in square metres or hectares, convert first: 1 km² = 1 000 000 m²; 1 km² = 100 hectares. A city of 2 million people covering 500 km² has a density of 2 000 000 ÷ 500 = 4000 people per km².

10. Population Change | 人口变化
Population change is driven by two main components: natural change (births minus deaths) and net migration (immigration minus emigration). The essential formulas are:

Natural Increase = Birth Rate – Death Rate

It is an approximation that geographers use to discuss rates of urbanisation and resource demand.

Mean Annual Temperature = Sum of 12 Monthly Temperatures ÷ 12

For example, a station with monthly temperatures ranging from 5 °C in January to 25 °C in July has an annual range of 20 °C. A total precipitation of 850 mm spread unevenly across the year might suggest a dry season. These figures help classify climates as equatorial, Mediterranean or temperate.
