KS3 OCR Philosophy: Essay Writing Framework and Model Answers | KS3 OCR

📚 KS3 OCR Philosophy: Essay Writing Framework and Model Answers | KS3 OCR

Writing a philosophy essay at KS3 level with OCR involves more than just stating your opinion. It requires a clear structure, logical arguments, and the ability to examine different viewpoints critically. This guide will provide you with a framework for crafting high-quality essays, along with two model answers to illustrate how to apply the techniques.

1. What is a Philosophy Essay? |

In OCR Philosophy, an essay demonstrates your knowledge of key concepts (AO1) and your skill in evaluating them (AO2). You are expected to present a balanced argument, considering strengths and weaknesses before reaching a reasoned conclusion.

Unlike a simple opinion piece, a philosophy essay must show that you can explain ideas fairly and then analyse them. This means you need to use evidence from philosophers, religious teachings or ethical theories to support your points.

2. Understanding the Question |

Before you start writing, break down the question. Look for command words such as ‘Discuss’, ‘Evaluate’ or ‘Do you agree?’. These tell you that you must look at more than one side of the argument and include both AO1 and AO2 in your answer.

Underline the key terms. If the question asks ‘Does the design argument prove God exists?’, you need to define ‘design argument’, explain what ‘prove’ means in philosophy, and then evaluate whether the argument is successful.

3. The PEEL Paragraph Structure | PEEL

Every main paragraph in your essay should follow the PEEL model: Point, Evidence, Explain, Link. This keeps your writing focused and ensures you are always developing your argument.

Point – Start with a clear topic sentence that states the argument of the paragraph. Evidence – Use a quote or reference to a philosophical idea. Explain – Show how the evidence supports your point. Link – Connect the paragraph back to the question or to the next point.

4. Planning Your Essay |

Spend the first five minutes of your writing time creating a quick plan. List the main arguments for and against, and decide on your overall line of reasoning. A simple table or mind map can help you organise AO1 and AO2 points before you begin.

A good plan for a ‘Does God exist?’ essay might look like: Introduction – define the question; Paragraph 1 – Design argument (AO1); Paragraph 2 – Evaluation of design argument (AO2); Paragraph 3 – Cosmological argument (AO1); Paragraph 4 – Counter-arguments (AO2); Conclusion – your reasoned judgement.

5. Crafting a Strong Introduction |

Your introduction should set out the debate and signpost the direction of your essay. Define any tricky terms and state clearly that you will be looking at arguments for and against before drawing a conclusion. Do not give your final answer here.

A weak introduction simply restates the question. A strong one shows you understand the philosophical issues at stake. For example: ‘The question of whether God exists has been debated for centuries. This essay will examine the strengths and weaknesses of the teleological argument and the problem of evil, before concluding that belief in God cannot be proven but remains reasonable for some.’

AO1 marks are awarded for showing accurate knowledge and understanding. When presenting a philosophical argument, explain it clearly as if your reader knows nothing about it. Use precise vocabulary and name the philosophers where relevant.

For instance, when outlining the design argument, you might write: ‘William Paley used the analogy of a watch to suggest that the complexity of the natural world points to a designer. Just as a watch’s intricate parts imply a watchmaker, the universe’s order implies a divine creator.’

AO2 marks require you to analyse and evaluate. This means you must not simply accept an argument; you need to weigh up its strengths and weaknesses. Introduce counter-arguments fairly and respond to them.

When evaluating the design argument, you could say: ‘A strength of Paley’s argument is that it appeals to common sense – we naturally look for causes of order. However, a major weakness comes from the theory of evolution. Charles Darwin showed how complexity can arise through natural selection over millions of years, removing the need for a designer.’

8. Writing a Clear Conclusion |

Your conclusion must answer the question directly, based on the evidence you have presented. Summarise the main points briefly and state your own reasoned judgement. Avoid introducing new arguments here.

A good conclusion might read: ‘In conclusion, while the design argument provides an intuitive and attractive case for God’s existence, it is undermined by scientific explanations such as evolution. Neither side can be proven absolutely, so I conclude that it is more reasonable to remain agnostic on this issue.’

9. Using Philosophical Vocabulary |

Using the right terminology shows the examiner that you are thinking like a philosopher. Words like ‘teleological’, ‘cosmological’, ‘a posteriori’, ‘omnipotent’ and ‘theodicy’ can lift your essay, but only if you define them clearly.

Never use a complex term without explaining it. For example, ‘The cosmological argument is an a posteriori argument, meaning it is based on experience. It starts from the fact that the universe exists and asks why.’

10. Common Mistakes to Avoid |

Many students lose marks by writing all they know without linking it to the question. Stay focused: every sentence should work towards answering the question. Also, avoid giving only one side of the debate – you must show balance.

Another frequent error is vague language. Instead of saying ‘Some people think God exists,’ specify: ‘Theists such as Christians argue that the universe displays design, whereas atheists like Richard Dawkins reject this.’ Being precise will earn more marks.

11. Model Answer 1: ‘Does God Exist?’ |

Introduction: The question of God’s existence has been central to philosophy and religion for millennia. This essay will examine the teleological argument and the problem of evil, evaluating their strengths and weaknesses before reaching a conclusion. Key terms such as ‘God’ (an omnipotent, benevolent creator) and ‘exist’ (having objective reality) must be clarified.

AO1 paragraph on the design argument: William Paley’s teleological argument proposes that the complexity and order in nature imply a designer. Paley compared a watch and its watchmaker to the universe: just as a watch’s parts work together for a purpose, so too do the parts of nature, such as the human eye. This suggests the existence of an intelligent creator.

AO2 evaluation: A key strength of Paley’s argument is its simplicity; it appeals to our intuition that design requires a designer. However, David Hume challenged this by arguing that the universe might be more like a vegetable than a watch, and that an ordered universe does not necessarily prove the God of classical theism. The most powerful objection comes from Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection, which explains biological complexity without referring to a designer. This does not disprove God, but it considerably weakens the argument’s logical force.

Counter-argument and conclusion: On the other hand, the problem of evil questions how an all-powerful, all-loving God could allow suffering. Despite attempts at theodicy, the existence of gratuitous suffering makes it hard to accept the classical idea of God. Weighing the evidence, while the design argument is intuitively appealing, scientific explanations and the problem of evil mean that God’s existence cannot be proven rationally. I therefore conclude that a position of agnosticism is the most intellectually honest.

12. Model Answer 2: ‘Is It Ever Right to Lie?’ |

Introduction: Lying is generally considered wrong, but are there exceptions? This essay will contrast deontological ethics, which forbids lying absolutely, with situational approaches such as utilitarianism, which may permit lying to achieve a greater good. I will argue that while honesty is a vital principle, lying can sometimes be morally justified.

Deontological view (AO1): Immanuel Kant argued that lying is always wrong. According to his categorical imperative, we should act only according to a rule that we could wish to become a universal law. If everyone lied, trust would collapse and communication would become impossible. Therefore, lying cannot be universalised and is morally impermissible in all cases, even to save a life.

Utilitarian evaluation (AO2): Utilitarians such as Jeremy Bentham would disagree. They judge actions by their consequences: the right action is the one that creates the greatest happiness for the greatest number. If lying to a would-be murderer about a victim’s location saves a life, it produces more happiness than telling the truth. This shows a strength of utilitarianism – it is flexible and considers real-world results. However, a weakness is that it might justify too many lies in everyday life, leading to the breakdown of trust that Kant feared.

Conclusion: Kant’s absolute stance preserves the value of truth but fails to address tragic moral dilemmas realistically. Utilitarianism offers a more compassionate response to extreme situations but risks being too permissive. I believe a middle ground is best: lying is generally wrong, but in exceptional circumstances where innocent lives are at immediate risk, a lie may be the lesser of two evils. Therefore, lying can be right, though only very rarely.
