1. Understanding Case Studies in Art |

A case study in KS3 Art is a focused investigation of an artwork, artist, style or movement. It involves looking closely, asking questions and gathering evidence from the work itself, as well as from its historical and cultural context.

Unlike a simple art history summary, a case study asks you to form your own interpretations and justify them using visual facts. This skill is assessed across the WJEC assessment objectives, particularly AO1 (Develop ideas through investigations) and AO3 (Record ideas and observations).

这项技能体现在 WJEC 评估目标的各个方面,特别是 AO1(通过调研发展想法)和 AO3(记录想法与观察)。

The practical exercises in this revision series are designed to mimic real WJEC tasks, where you might be shown an unfamiliar artwork and asked to analyse it on the spot. By practising the steps, you will build a mental toolkit that works for any painting, sculpture, photograph or installation.

2. The 4-Step Analysis Framework |

To structure your analysis clearly, use the ‘Describe, Analyse, Interpret, Judge’ framework. This method ensures you move from objective observation to personal evaluation without skipping important evidence.

Step Key Question What You Do
1. Describe What do I see? List the subject, materials, size, colours, shapes and textures without judgement.
2. Analyse How is the work organised? Examine the formal elements and design principles – line, tone, form, balance, contrast, etc.
3. Interpret What does it mean? Consider the artist’s intention, mood, symbolism and cultural background.
4. Judge How successful is it? Give your personal opinion backed by reasons from the previous steps.

Each step builds on the one before it, so never jump straight to ‘I like it’ without first describing and analysing what is actually there. This framework is also what examiners look for in a well-rounded answer.

3. Step 1: Describe What You See | 第一步:描述所见

Start with pure observation. Imagine you are describing the artwork to someone who cannot see it. Use factual, neutral language and include details that might seem obvious – they often become important later.

Subject matter: Identify the main figures, objects or scene. Is it a portrait, a landscape, an abstract composition?

Medium and materials: Say whether it is oil on canvas, watercolour, clay, bronze, digital print, mixed media. Mention the size if you know it.

Colour palette: Name the dominant colours – are they warm (reds, oranges, yellows) or cool (blues, greens, purples)? Are they bright and saturated, or muted and dull?

Shapes and forms: Look for obvious geometric shapes or organic, flowing ones. Are there strong outlines, or do shapes blend softly?

Practise describing a well-known image, such as the Mona Lisa, without using any words of judgment. You will find this harder than it sounds, but it trains your eye to see detail.

4. Step 2: Analyse Visual Elements |

Now dig into the building blocks of the artwork – the formal elements. For each element, ask how it has been used and what effect it creates. WJEC expects you to be familiar with line, tone, colour, pattern, texture, shape, form and space.

Line: Are the lines bold and expressive, or fine and controlled? Do they create movement, outline forms, or suggest texture? For example, swirling lines can convey energy, while horizontal lines suggest calm.

Tone: How has the artist used light and dark? Is there strong contrast (chiaroscuro) for dramatic effect, or a subtle range of greys for softness? Tone can create depth and volume.

Colour: Go beyond naming colours. Look for complementary colour pairs (red–green, blue–orange) that create vibrancy, or harmonious adjacent colours for unity. Consider the emotional impact of colour choices.

Texture: Is the surface smooth, rough, impasto (thick paint), or illusionistic? Texture can be real (you can feel it) or visual (it looks like fur, wood, but is flat).

Use a table to record your observations when practising. This will help you spot patterns and connections between elements before you move to interpretation.

5. Step 3: Interpret Meaning and Context |

Interpretation is where you bring together your observations and ask, ‘What is the artist trying to say?’ This step requires some knowledge of the artist’s background, the time and place the work was made, and any symbols or narratives present.

Mood and atmosphere: How does the artwork make you feel? Does it feel peaceful, tense, joyful, melancholic? Link this feeling back to the formal elements – e.g. dark tones and jagged lines often create unease.

Symbolism: Look for objects or colours that carry meaning. In Christian art, a lamb may symbolise Jesus; in modern art, a clock might reference the passing of time. Not every artwork uses symbols, but many do.

Context: When and where was the work created? A war-time painting, for instance, may reflect trauma or hope. An artist’s personal experiences or cultural beliefs can deeply shape the work. Research the artist’s statement if available.

Avoid wild guesses. Always point to visual evidence that supports your interpretation. Phrases like ‘The dark sky suggests…’ or ‘The repeated circle motif might symbolise…’ show WJEC assessors you are thinking critically.

6. Step 4: Make a Personal Judgement |

Now you can give your own opinion, but it must be justified. A statement like ‘This painting is good’ carries little weight; instead, explain what works well and why, based on your analysis.

Assessing success: Did the artist achieve what you think they set out to do? If the aim was to communicate loneliness, and the isolated figure in a vast space makes you feel exactly that, then the work is successful in that respect.

Comparing within a context: How does the work relate to other pieces by the same artist or to other art from the same period? You might say, ‘Unlike the artist’s earlier bright canvases, this piece uses a muted palette to show a shift in mood.’

Personal connection: Be honest about your response. You might admire the technique but feel emotionally distant, or vice versa. Explaining why you react in a certain way shows mature reflection.

A useful sentence frame: ‘In my opinion, the work is effective because [visual evidence] creates a sense of [mood/meaning], although I find the [element] less convincing due to [reason].’

7. Case Study 1: Vincent van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ |

Let’s apply the framework to Van Gogh’s famous 1889 oil painting ‘The Starry Night’. This is a great case study for KS3 because it is packed with expressive formal elements and has a known backstory.

Describe: The painting shows a night sky filled with swirling clouds, a bright crescent moon and glowing stars. Below lies a quiet village with a church steeple dominating the skyline, while a large dark cypress tree rises in the foreground. The medium is oil on canvas, size 73.7 cm × 92.1 cm. Colours are mostly deep blues, yellows and greens.

Analyse: The most striking element is the energetic, thick brushstrokes (impasto) that create rhythm and motion across the sky. Lines are sinuous and undulating, directing the eye around the composition. Tone is highly contrasting between the luminous sky and the dark, quiet earth. Van Gogh exaggerates colour for emotional effect, using orange-yellow against deep blue to create a vibrating complementary contrast. Texture is rough and tactile, almost sculpting the paint.

Interpret: Van Gogh painted this from his window at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum. The swirling sky can be seen as a reflection of his inner turmoil, yet the bright stars suggest hope. The cypress tree often symbolises death and eternity, bridging earth and sky. The village is peaceful, perhaps representing the calm he longed for. The prominent church connects to his religious feelings. The overall mood is one of awe and restless energy.

Judge: In my opinion, ‘Starry Night’ is extraordinarily successful in conveying intense emotion through landscape. The exaggerated colour and swirling lines give a universal, spiritual quality to the night sky. While the village is rendered more traditionally, this contrast makes the sky even more powerful. I find the work deeply moving because it transforms personal suffering into beauty that anyone can feel.

8. Case Study 2: Barbara Hepworth’s ‘Pelagos’ |

Moving to sculpture, Barbara Hepworth’s ‘Pelagos’ (1946) is an excellent example to show how formal elements work in three dimensions. The title is Greek for ‘sea’, and the piece is made of painted wood and strings.

Describe: ‘Pelagos’ is a hollowed wooden form, painted pale blue inside and a darker, muted tone outside. Its shape resembles a wave, a shell or a landscape hollow. Tight strings are stretched across the concave opening, like a musical instrument. The size is modest – about 43 cm in length – inviting close inspection.

Analyse: Hepworth uses the tension between the solid, smooth wooden shell and the taut strings to create a feeling of contained energy. The carved hollow suggests shelter or a natural cove. Line is dominant: the strings create both literal lines and a sense of drawn movement. The contrast of interior light blue and exterior dark tone suggests depth and horizon. Texture is smooth and polished, with the strings adding a tactile, linear rhythm.

Interpret: ‘Pelagos’ is not a literal sea but an essence of it – the curve of a wave, the sound of wind, the horizon line. The strings may evoke the wind on water or the taut surface of the sea. The interior blue suggests calm waters or a safe harbour. Hepworth lived in St Ives, Cornwall, and her work was deeply influenced by the coastal landscape. This piece is a quiet meditation on nature’s forms rather than a dramatic statement.

Judge: I find ‘Pelagos’ remarkably effective because it invites the viewer to complete the image with their own sensory memories of the sea. The use of string is ingenious, adding a soundless musicality. One might argue that the piece is too abstract to ‘read’, but its strength lies precisely in that openness. It demonstrates how minimal forms can evoke vast, elemental experiences.

9. Applying Analysis to Your Own Artwork |

The same framework can be used to evaluate your own practical work. Self-analysis helps you write stronger artist statements and identify areas for improvement before your final submission.

When reflecting on a drawing or painting you have made, go through Describe-Analyse-Interpret-Judge, but replace ‘artist’s intention’ with your own. Ask: What did I intend to communicate, and does the final piece achieve this? Be as objective as possible.

For example, if your intention was to show a busy, chaotic street scene, check whether your use of line is bold and overlapping, and whether your composition feels crowded. If your colour choices feel too calm, note that for your next project. This process turns mistakes into valuable learning.

10. Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them | 常见错误及避免方法

Many students lose marks not because they don’t understand the artwork, but because they fall into predictable traps. Here are the most frequent pitfalls in WJEC case study tasks.

Pitfall 1: Jumping straight to judgement. Starting with ‘I like this painting because…’ before any description means you lack supporting evidence. Always begin with What and How before Why.

Pitfall 2: Vague language. Words like ‘nice’, ‘good’, ‘interesting’ say almost nothing. Replace them with precise terms: ‘harmonious colour scheme’, ‘dynamic diagonal lines’, ‘contrasting textures’. Build a vocabulary list and practise using it.

Pitfall 3: Listing elements without explaining their effect. Saying ‘there are blue and orange colours’ scores low; saying ‘the complementary blue and orange create visual tension that draws the eye to the central figure’ demonstrates higher-level analysis.

Pitfall 4: Ignoring context when it is provided. If you are given a title, date or artist note, use it. Even a simple date can tell you whether the work was made during wartime or a period of social change.

11. Self-Reflection and Peer Feedback |

Regular self-reflection and structured peer feedback are key to improving your analytical writing. After completing a case study exercise, use a checklist to review your own response before sharing it with a partner.

Self-reflection checklist:

  • Have I described the subject, medium and key visual facts objectively?
  • Have I used at least four formal element terms (line, tone, texture, etc.) with explained effect?
  • Have I linked my interpretation to visual evidence and context?
  • Have I offered a justified personal opinion?

When giving peer feedback, follow the ‘two stars and a wish’ method: point out two specific things the response does well, and one area that could be improved with a suggestion. This builds a supportive, critical community in the classroom.

12. Revision Tips and Further Practice |

To feel exam-ready, build a habit of analysing an unseen artwork each week. Choose works from different cultures, time periods and art forms – include craft, architecture and digital media alongside painting and sculpture.

Create a personal ‘analysis journal’ where you sketch the artwork quickly and annotate it with arrows linking visual features to your comments. This active recall method is much more effective than simply reading notes.
