1. Pinyin and Tones | 拼音与声调
Pinyin is the romanisation system for Mandarin Chinese. It uses the Latin alphabet to represent sounds, but the pronunciation rules are different from English. Most importantly, Mandarin is a tonal language with four main tones and a neutral tone. Getting the tones right is essential because the same syllable can mean completely different things depending on the tone.
拼音是普通话的罗马字母注音系统。它使用拉丁字母表示读音,但发音规则与英语不同。最重要的是,汉语是一种有声调的语言,有四个主要声调和一个轻声。掌握声调至关重要,因为同一个音节会由于声调不同而表达完全不同的意思。
Here is a table summarising the tones using the syllable ‘ma’:
以下是使用音节 ‘ma’ 总结声调的表格:
| Tone | Description | Pinyin | Meaning |
| 1st | High and level | ma (actually ma with macron, ma) | mother |
Wait, I should correct the ma tone: 1st tone ma is ma with macron, but Unicode: mā. And mother is 妈 mā. So:
| Tone | Description | Pinyin | Meaning |
| 1st | High, level | ma | mother (m.) |
Actually, need Unicode: mā (ma with macron). But the pinyin should be written as mā, not ma. So in table: 1st tone pinyin is mā (using Unicode), meaning “mother” 妈. Provide tone marks: 1st mā, 2nd má (hemp), 3rd mǎ (horse), 4th mà (scold), neutral ma (question particle). So table:
| Tone | Description | Pinyin | Character & Meaning |
| 1st | High, level | ma | ma (mother) |
I can’t use macron in plain text? I can use Unicode: mā, má, mǎ, mà. So:
That works. Then explain tone change rules, like 3rd tone change when two 3rd tones appear together: nǐ hǎo becomes ní hǎo in pronunciation. And use of apostrophe for syllable separation: Xī’ān. These are important.
I’ll include some practice words: shū (book), xué (learn), hǎo (good), dà (big). And the importance of tone marks when writing pinyin in exams.
Continue with section 2. Characters and strokes, radicals, etc.
Must ensure every point is bilingual: English p then Chinese p. So structure like this.
Let’s write full article now. I’ll produce it.

1. Pinyin and Tones | 拼音与声调
Pinyin is the romanisation system for Standard Chinese. It uses the Latin alphabet to represent sounds, but the pronunciation rules are different from English. Mandarin is a tonal language with four main tones and a neutral tone. The same syllable can mean completely different things depending on the tone, so mastering tones is the foundation of clear communication.
拼音是现代标准汉语的罗马字母注音系统。它使用拉丁字母表示读音,但发音规则与英语不同。汉语是一种有声调的语言,有四个主要声调和一个轻声。同一个音节会由于声调不同而表达完全不同的意思,因此掌握声调是清晰交流的基础。
Below is the tone table for the syllable ‘ma’:
下面是音节 ‘ma’ 的声调表:
| Tone | Description | Pinyin | Character & Meaning |
| 1st | High, level | mā | 妈 (mother) |
| 2nd | Rising | má | 麻 (hemp) |
| 3rd | Low, dipping | mǎ | 马 (horse) |
| 4th | Falling | mà | 骂 (scold) |
| Neutral | Light, short | ma | 吗 (question particle) |
You must also learn the tone change rules. The most common one is the third-tone sandhi: when two third-tone syllables appear together, the first one is pronounced as a second tone. For example, ‘nǐ hǎo’ (你好, hello) is actually said as ‘ní hǎo’. Another important rule is that the word ‘bù’ (不, not) changes to a second tone before a fourth tone, e.g. ‘bù shì’ → ‘bú shì’ (不是, is not).
你还必须学习变调规则。最常见的是一条是三声变调:当两个三声音节连在一起时,第一个音节读作二声。例如,’nǐ hǎo’(你好)实际上读作 ‘ní hǎo’。另一条重要规则是 ‘bù’(不)在四声前变为二声,比如 ‘bù shì’ → ‘bú shì’(不是)。
When writing pinyin, always mark the tone on the main vowel. The standard order for vowel marking is a, o, e, i, u, ü. For example, in ‘xióng’ the tone mark goes on o. For the neutral tone, no tone mark is written. Use an apostrophe for syllable boundaries when necessary, e.g. ‘Xī’ān’ (西安) versus ‘xiān’ (先).
书写拼音时,一定要在主要元音上标调。元音标记的优先顺序是 a, o, e, i, u, ü。例如,在 ‘xióng’ 中声调标在 o 上。轻声不标调。必要时用隔音符号分隔音节,例如 ‘Xī’ān’(西安)与 ‘xiān’(先)区别。
2. Basic Strokes and Stroke Order | 基本笔画与笔顺
Every Chinese character is built from a set of basic strokes. Learning to recognise and write these strokes correctly will help you form characters neatly and remember them more easily. The eight fundamental strokes are: dot (diǎn), horizontal (héng), vertical (shù), hook (gōu), rising (tí), right-falling (nà), left-falling (piě) and the turning stroke (zhé).
每一个汉字都由一组基本笔画构成。学会正确辨认和书写这些笔画,有助于你写出工整的汉字,也更容易记忆。八个基本笔画是:点、横、竖、钩、提、捺、撇和折。
Stroke order rules follow a logical pattern. The general principles are: write from top to bottom, from left to right, horizontal strokes before vertical ones when they cross, and outside enclosing frames before the inside content. For example, the character ‘十’ (ten) is written with a horizontal stroke first, then a vertical stroke. The character ‘口’ (mouth) is written with a left vertical, a turning stroke for the top and right, then a closing bottom horizontal.
笔顺规则遵循一定的逻辑。一般原则是:先上后下,先左后右,先横后竖(当它们交叉时),先外后内再封口。例如,’十’ 字先写横,再写竖。’口’ 字先写左竖,再写横折,最后写下横封口。
Practise the stroke order for these high-frequency characters: ‘人’ (rén, person), ‘大’ (dà, big), ‘小’ (xiǎo, small), ‘我’ (wǒ, I) and ‘你’ (nǐ, you). WJEC listening and reading papers often require you to identify characters quickly, and writing tasks reward accurate stroke order. A good habit is to count the strokes of new characters, because many dictionaries and indexes are organised by stroke count.
请练习这些高频汉字的笔顺:’人’、’大’、’小’、’我’ 和 ‘你’。WJEC 的听力和阅读考试经常要求你快速识别汉字,写作题也会奖励正确的笔顺。一个好习惯是数一数生字的笔画数,因为许多词典和索引都是按笔画数编排的。
3. Radicals and Character Structure | 部首与汉字结构
Radicals (bùshǒu) are the building blocks of Chinese characters. They often give you a clue about the meaning or pronunciation. The radical for ‘water’ (氵) appears in characters like ‘海’ (hǎi, sea) and ‘河’ (hé, river). The radical for ‘hand’ (扌) appears in ‘打’ (dǎ, to hit) and ‘拍’ (pāi, to pat). Recognising radicals can help you guess the meaning of unfamiliar characters and is a key skill for WJEC exam success.
部首是汉字的构建模块。它们常常给你提供关于字义或字音的线索。’水’ 的部首(氵)出现在 ‘海’ 和 ‘河’ 等字中。’手’ 的部首(扌)出现在 ‘打’ 和 ‘拍’ 中。辨认能帮助你推测生字的意思,这也是在 WJEC 考试中取得成功的一项关键技能。
Characters can be divided into single-component characters (独体字) and compound characters (合体字). Compound characters usually follow one of these structures: left–right (e.g. 你), top–bottom (e.g. 男), inside–outside (e.g. 国) or a combination. When you write, keep the proportions balanced: in a left–right character the left radical is usually narrower.
汉字可分为独体字和合体字。合体字通常遵循以下结构之一:左右结构(如 你)、上下结构(如 男)、包围结构(如 国)或混合结构。书写时注意保持比例协调:在左右结构中,左边的部首通常要写得窄一些。
Here are six common radicals you should know for KS3: 口 (mouth, eating/speaking), 日 (sun, time/light), 木 (wood, plant-related), 心 (heart, feelings/thinking), 讠 (speech, language) and 女 (woman, female-related). Each one unlocks dozens of characters.
以下是 KS3 阶段你应该掌握的六个常见部首:口(与口、饮食、说话有关),日(与太阳、时间、光明有关),木(与树木、植物有关),心(与情感、思想有关),讠(与语言、说话有关)和 女(与女性有关)。每一个都能帮你解锁数十个汉字。
4. Greetings and Self-introduction | 问候与自我介绍
One of the first topics you will encounter is exchanging basic greetings. You need to be able to say hello, ask how someone is, and introduce your name, age and nationality. Key phrases include: 你好 (nǐ hǎo, hello), 我叫… (wǒ jiào…, I am called…), 我十三岁 (wǒ shísān suì, I am 13 years old), 我是英国人 (wǒ shì yīngguó rén, I am British).
你首先会接触到的主题之一就是基本问候。你需要能够打招呼、询问某人近况,并介绍自己的姓名、年龄和国籍。关键短语包括:你好、我叫……、我十三岁、我是英国人。
Pay attention to the polite forms. When addressing elders or teachers, use 您好 (nín hǎo) instead of 你好. To ask someone’s name politely, say: 请问, 你叫什么名字? (qǐng wèn, nǐ jiào shénme míngzi?). The word 请 (please) is extremely useful and appears in many WJEC role-play tasks.
注意敬语形式。称呼长辈或老师时,用 您好 而不用 你好。礼貌地询问对方的姓名,可以说:请问,你叫什么名字?’请’ 字非常有用,在 WJEC 的许多角色扮演任务中都会出现。
When introducing your nationality, learn the pattern: 我是 + [country] + 人. Common nationalities: 中国 (zhōngguó, China) – 中国人; 英国 (yīngguó, UK) – 英国人; 美国 (měiguó, USA) – 美国人; 法国 (fàguó, France) – 法国人. For age, remember that 岁 follows the number directly: 我十二岁 (I am 12). The verb 是 is not used with age.
介绍国籍时,学会句型:我是 + [国家] + 人。常见国籍:中国 – 中国人;英国 – 英国人;美国 – 美国人;法国 – 法国人。表示年龄时,记住 ‘岁’ 直接跟在数字后面:我十二岁。年龄不用动词 ‘是’。
5. Numbers, Dates and Time | 数字、日期与时间
Numbers in Chinese are very logical. Learn 0–10 first: 零 (líng), 一 (yī), 二 (èr), 三 (sān), 四 (sì), 五 (wǔ), 六 (liù), 七 (qī), 八 (bā), 九 (jiǔ), 十 (shí). For numbers 11–19, combine ten and the unit: 十一 (shíyī), 十二 (shí’èr). For multiples of ten: 二十 (èrshí), 三十 (sānshí) and so on. 100 is 一百 (yībǎi). Remember, there is a special reading for two in certain contexts: 两 (liǎng) is used before measure words, e.g. 两个人 (two people).
中文的数字很有逻辑。先学 0–10:零、一、二、三、四、五、六、七、八、九、十。11–19 的数字是十和个位数字的组合:十一、十二。整十数字:二十、三十等。一百就是一百。记住,’二’ 在某些情况下有特殊读法:量词前用 ‘两’,例如 两个人。
Dates follow the order year-month-day: 2025年4月3日 (èr líng èr wǔ nián sì yuè sān rì). The days of the week are formed by adding the number after 星期 (xīngqī): Monday 星期一, Tuesday 星期二, etc. For Sunday, you can use 星期日 or 星期天. Months are simply the number + 月 (yuè): January is 一月.
日期遵循年-月-日的顺序:2025年4月3日。星期几是在 ‘星期’ 后加数字:Monday 星期一,Tuesday 星期二,等等。星期日或星期天表示 Sunday。月份是数字 + 月:一月就是 January。
Telling the time uses 点 (diǎn, o’clock) and 分 (fēn, minute). Structure: …点…分. For example: 三点十五分 (3:15). Half past is 半 (bàn): 三点半 (3:30). Quarter past is 一刻 (yī kè): 三点一刻 (3:15). The word for ‘a.m.’ is 上午 (shàngwǔ) and ‘p.m.’ is 下午 (xiàwǔ). Always place the time expression before the verb: 我上午八点上课 (I have class at 8 a.m.).
时间表达用 ‘点’ 和 ‘分’。结构:……点……分。例如:三点十五分。半点用 ‘半’:三点半。一刻钟用 ‘一刻’:三点一刻。上午表示 a.m.,下午表示 p.m.。时间词始终放在动词之前:我上午八点上课。
6. Family and Descriptions | 家庭与描述
Family vocabulary is a core topic. You should know: 爸爸 (bàba, dad), 妈妈 (māma, mum), 哥哥 (gēge, older brother), 弟弟 (dìdi, younger brother), 姐姐 (jiějie, older sister), 妹妹 (mèimei, younger sister). Unlike English, Chinese distinguishes older and younger siblings. For grandpa use 爷爷 (yéye, paternal) or 外公 (wàigōng, maternal), and for grandma use 奶奶 (nǎinai, paternal) or 外婆 (wàipó, maternal). KS3 often focuses on immediate family, so be sure you can say 我有一个哥哥 (I have one older brother).
家庭词汇是核心主题。你应该掌握:爸爸、妈妈、哥哥、弟弟、姐姐、妹妹。与英语不同,中文区分哥哥和弟弟、姐姐和妹妹。爷爷(父方)或外公(母方)表示爷爷,奶奶(父方)或外婆(母方)表示奶奶。KS3 通常侧重于直系亲属,所以要确保你能说 我有一个哥哥。
When describing people, the adjective comes before 的 (de). Common adjectives: 高 (gāo, tall), 矮 (ǎi, short), 漂亮 (piàoliang, pretty), 帅 (shuài, handsome), 聪明 (cōngming, clever), 可爱 (kě’ài, cute). Sentence pattern: Subject + 很 + adjective. Note that 很 (very) is often just a link and does not always mean ‘very’. 我妈妈很漂亮 means ‘My mum is pretty.’ You do not use the verb 是 here.
描述人物时,形容词放在 ‘的’ 前面。常见形容词:高、矮、漂亮、帅、聪明、可爱。句型:主语 + 很 + 形容词。注意,’很’ 常常只是连接作用,并不总是表示 ‘很’ 的意思。’我妈妈很漂亮’ 意思是 ‘我妈妈漂亮’,这里不用动词 ‘是’。
You should also be able to ask about family: 你家有几口人? (How many people are there in your family?) Typical answer: 我家有三口人:爸爸、妈妈和我 (There are three people in my family: dad, mum and me). WJEC speaking tests often include describing your family members, so practise using adjectives and the particle 的.
你还应该能够询问家庭情况:你家有几口人?典型回答:我家有三口人:爸爸、妈妈和我。WJEC 口语考试常包括描述家庭成员,所以要练习使用形容词和助词 ‘的’。
7. School and Daily Routines | 学校与日常活动
School subjects: 数学 (shùxué, maths), 英语 (yīngyǔ, English), 中文 (zhōngwén, Chinese), 科学 (kēxué, science), 体育 (tǐyù, PE), 历史 (lìshǐ, history), 地理 (dìlǐ, geography), 音乐 (yīnyuè, music). To express liking a subject, use 喜欢 (xǐhuan): 我喜欢数学. For ‘my favourite subject’ use 我最喜欢的课是… (wǒ zuì xǐhuan de kè shì…).
学校科目:数学、英语、中文、科学、体育、历史、地理、音乐。表达喜欢某科目用 ‘喜欢’:我喜欢数学。’我最喜欢的科目是……’ 用 我最喜欢的课是……。
Classroom objects you need to recognise: 书 (shū, book), 笔 (bǐ, pen/pencil), 书包 (shūbāo, schoolbag), 桌子 (zhuōzi, desk), 椅子 (yǐzi, chair), 老师 (lǎoshī, teacher), 同学 (tóngxué, classmate). Useful classroom phrases: 请举手 (qǐng jǔ shǒu, please raise your hand), 请听 (qǐng tīng, please listen), 请再说一遍 (qǐng zài shuō yī biàn, please say it again).
你需要认识的教室物品:书、笔、书包、桌子、椅子、老师、同学。有用的课堂用语:请举手、请听、请再说一遍。
Daily routine vocabulary: 起床 (qǐchuáng, get up), 吃早饭 (chī zǎofàn, eat breakfast), 上学 (shàngxué, go to school), 上课 (shàngkè, have lessons), 放学 (fàngxué, finish school), 做作业 (zuò zuòyè, do homework), 睡觉 (shuìjiào, sleep). The time expression usually goes at the beginning: 我七点起床 (I get up at 7 o’clock). WJEC writing tasks often ask you to describe a typical day, so learn these action verbs well.
日常作息词汇:起床、吃早饭、上学、上课、放学、做作业、睡觉。时间词通常放在句首:我七点起床。WJEC 写作任务经常要求你描述典型的一天,所以请学好这些动作动词。
8. Food, Drinks and Ordering | 食物、饮料与点餐
A big part of WJEC KS3 Chinese is being able to talk about food and drink. Start with the basics:
To express likes and dislikes, use 喜欢 and 不喜欢, or stronger forms: 非常喜欢 (really like), 不太喜欢 (not really like). Another important verb is 吃 (chī, to eat) and 喝 (hē, to drink). Sentence: 我每天喝水 (I drink water every day). For ordering food, you can say: 我要一碗米饭 (I would like a bowl of rice) or 请给我一杯茶 (Please give me a cup of tea). The measure words 碗 (wǎn, bowl) and 杯 (bēi, cup/glass) are essential.
表达喜欢和不喜欢用 ‘喜欢’ 和 ‘不喜欢’,或更强的形式:非常喜欢、不太喜欢。另外两个重要的动词是 ‘吃’ 和 ‘喝’。例句:我每天喝水。点餐时,你可以说:我要一碗米饭,或 请给我一杯茶。量词 ‘碗’ 和 ‘杯’ 是必不可少的。
At a restaurant, useful phrases include: 多少钱? (duōshao qián? How much?), 买单 (mǎidān, pay the bill). For WJEC role-plays, you might be asked to order food and respond to a waiter. Practise this short dialogue: A: 你想吃什么? B: 我想吃牛肉面. A: 你想喝什么? B: 一杯可乐, 谢谢.
在餐厅里,有用的短语包括:多少钱?买单。对于 WJEC 的角色扮演,你可能会被要求点餐并回应服务员。请练习以下简短对话:A: 你想吃什么? B: 我想吃牛肉面。 A: 你想喝什么? B: 一杯可乐,谢谢。
9. Hobbies, Sports and Free Time | 爱好、运动与闲暇时光
Talking about hobbies is enjoyable and very common in the speaking exam. Key verbs: 喜欢, 会 (huì, can/to be able to), 去 (qù, go). Hobbies: 看书 (kàn shū, reading), 看电视 (kàn diànshì, watching TV), 听音乐 (tīng y
