1. Shannon–Weaver Transmission Theorem |
Communication = Sender → Encoder → Signal → Decoder → Receiver + Noise
The Shannon–Weaver model (1949) treats communication as a linear, one-way flow of information. The sender originates a message and passes it through an encoder, which turns ideas into a signal. This signal travels along a channel and reaches a decoder, which reconstructs the message for the receiver. At any point, noise — physical, psychological or semantic — can degrade the signal and reduce the fidelity of the transmitted meaning.
Lasswell’s Formula: Who → says What → in Which Channel → to Whom → with What Effect?
Harold Lasswell (1948) proposed a functional question chain that mirrors the linear paradigm. Each arrow represents a critical variable: the communicator, the content, the medium, the audience and the outcome. Media analysts still use this five-question framework to deconstruct any communication event.
2. Semiotic Formulae: Sign, Myth and Denotation |
Saussurean Sign = Signifier + Signified
Ferdinand de Saussure defined the linguistic sign as the union of a sound-image (signifier) and a concept (signified). The relationship is arbitrary but fixed by social convention. In media analysis, a red rose (signifier) carries the signified of passion or romance only because audiences share a cultural code.
Barthes’ Two Orders of Signification: Denotation + Connotation → Myth
Roland Barthes extended the sign by distinguishing denotation (literal, first-order meaning) from connotation (cultural, second-order meaning). When a connotation becomes naturalised and ideologically charged, it operates as myth. For instance, a photograph of a politician standing in front of a national flag denotes a person and a textile; it connotes patriotism and authority, reinforcing a myth of national unity.
3. Todorov’s Narrative Equilibrium Theorem |
Narrative = Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Attempted Repair → New Equilibrium
Tzvetan Todorov argued that all conventional narratives move through five stages. An initial state of balance is upset by an event or force (disruption). The characters acknowledge the disruption (recognition) and strive to resolve it (attempted repair). The story concludes with a transformed equilibrium, which is never a simple return to the starting point. This theorem underpins countless media texts, from news bulletins to film plots.
For example, a crime drama opens with an orderly community (equilibrium), introduces a murder (disruption), shows detectives pinpointing the crime (recognition), follows the investigation (attempted repair) and concludes with the killer caught and social order restored (new equilibrium).
4. Propp’s Character Function Theorem |
Plot = f (Villain, Donor, Helper, Princess/ sought-for person, Dispatcher, Hero, False Hero)
After analysing Russian folk tales, Vladimir Propp identified seven archetypal character roles, or ‘spheres of action’. Though Propp worked with folklore, his morphology has been widely adopted in media studies to analyse film, television and video game narratives. The hero undertakes a quest; the villain obstructs it; the donor provides a magical agent; the helper assists; the princess is the reward; the dispatcher sends the hero forth; and the false hero tries to usurp the hero’s place.
Contemporary media texts frequently mix or subvert these functions, but the underlying structure remains a powerful analytical tool. In many superhero films, for instance, the ‘donor’ might be a mentor, and the ‘princess’ can be an object of ideological value rather than a female character.
5. Lévi-Strauss’ Binary Opposition Formula |
Meaning = f (Opposition A — Opposition B)
Claude Lévi-Strauss argued that narratives and cultural myths are structured around paired opposites such as good/evil, nature/culture, male/female, East/West. These oppositions do not merely reflect reality; they organise our perception of the social world. Media texts constantly invoke binary oppositions to generate conflict, drive plots and reinforce dominant ideologies.
Example: News framing = ‘Order’ vs ‘Chaos’ → reinforces authority
In news coverage, protest is frequently framed as chaos disrupting the established order. The binary opposition between law-abiding citizens and lawless protesters naturalises the perspective of the state and marginalises dissent. Deconstructing such oppositions is a core skill in Pre-U textual analysis.
6. Hall’s Encoding/Decoding Theorem |
Meaningₐ ≠ Meaningₑ where Meaningₐ = Decoded reading and Meaningₑ = Encoded intention
Stuart Hall rejected the transmission view of communication. He argued that media producers encode preferred meanings into texts, but audiences do not passively accept them. Instead, meaning is produced through the interaction of text and reader. The potential readings are classified into three decoding positions: dominant-hegemonic (reader accepts the preferred meaning), negotiated (reader partly shares and partly adapts the meaning) and oppositional (reader recognises the preferred meaning but rejects it within an alternative framework).
Dominant reading = Encoded meaning; Negotiated reading = Encoded meaning ± situated knowledge; Oppositional reading = Opposite of encoded meaning
An advertisement for a luxury watch may encode sophistication and status (dominant reading). A viewer who aspires to the lifestyle but lacks the means might negotiate the message as ‘desirable but unrealistic’. A critic of consumerism might decode it as an ideological tool that reproduces class inequality (oppositional reading).
7. Uses and Gratifications Equation |
Media Use = Σ (Gratifications Sought × Gratifications Obtained)
Departing from the question ‘What do media do to people?’, uses and gratifications theory asks ‘What do people do with media?’ Audiences are active, goal-directed users who select media to satisfy particular needs. Blumler and Katz categorised these needs as diversion (escape), personal relationships (social utility), personal identity (reinforcing values) and surveillance (information seeking).
The equation above symbolises that overall satisfaction is the sum of the gratifications actually experienced, weighted by the importance of the needs sought. If a teen uses TikTok seeking entertainment (high) and social interaction (moderate), the obtained gratifications in both dimensions determine continued use. When obtained gratifications < sought gratifications, the user may switch to an alternative medium.
8. Two-Step Flow and Opinion Leadership Theorem |
Mass Media → Opinion Leaders → Wider Audience
Lazarsfeld, Berelson and Gaudet’s 1940s voting studies demonstrated that media messages do not reach individuals directly but are filtered through opinion leaders. These opinion leaders are more exposed to media, well-connected within their community and trusted for their interpretations. The two-step flow model therefore inserts an interpersonal layer between mass media and mass audiences.
In the digital age, the theorem has been updated: micro-influencers and social media personalities function as contemporary opinion leaders, disseminating mediated content with added personal commentary. Brands frequently exploit this by sending products to influencers, expecting their endorsement to cascade through followers’ networks.
9. Agenda-Setting Function Formula |
Media Agenda ≈ Public Agenda (with a time lag)
McCombs and Shaw (1972) proposed that while media may not tell us what to think, they are stunningly successful in telling us what to think about. The salience of issues on the media agenda transfers to the public agenda over time. The formula indicates a strong positive correlation, particularly for unobtrusive issues with which the public has little direct experience.
Second-level agenda-setting: Attribute salience transfer = Framing effect
Beyond object salience, second-level agenda-setting suggests that the media’s framing of attributes — e.g., emphasising the economic cost of a policy over its social benefit — shapes how audiences evaluate the issue. This merges agenda-setting with framing theory.
10. Cultivation Differential Formula |
Reality Perception = f (Television Viewing Hours, Content Genre, Demographic Moderators)
Gerbner’s cultivation theory argues that heavy television viewers (four or more hours a day) gradually absorb the distorted world view presented on screen. Long-term exposure to violence, stereotypes and specific gender roles cultivates a shared outlook that moves closer to the ‘TV world’ than to statistical reality. The cultivation differential is the gap in beliefs between heavy and light viewers.
Mean World Syndrome = f (Heavy consumption of crime drama) → Overestimation of crime risk
For instance, heavy viewers of crime dramas consistently overestimate the real-world incidence of violent crime and express greater fear of victimisation — a phenomenon termed ‘mean world syndrome’. This differential persists even when demographic variables are controlled.
11. Genre as a Hybrid Formula |
Genre = Core Repertoire of Elements (Iconography, Style, Setting, Narrative, Character types) × Audience Expectation
Genres function as economic and cultural categories that reduce risk for producers and guide audience choice. Steve Neale argued that genres are defined by ‘repetition and difference’: a genre text must repeat familiar conventions to secure legibility, while introducing novelty to prevent boredom. The formula above captures genre as an interplay between an established repertoire and shifting audience expectations.
Hybridity = Genreₐ × Genreₑ → New conventions
When two or more genres merge — e.g., horror-comedy (zom-com) or science-fiction western — the hybrid generates new conventions that can attract a broader audience segment. Hybridity is increasingly the norm in contemporary media, and analysing the fusion of conventions is a key exam requirement.
12. Hypodermic Needle Effect Model |
Media Message → Uniform, Immediate, Direct Effect on All Exposed Audiences
The hypodermic needle model (also called the magic bullet theory) emerged from early mass-society theorising. It imagines the media as injecting values, attitudes and behaviours straight into a passive, atomised audience, much like a syringe delivering a drug. This model was fuelled by the 1938 ‘War of the Worlds’ radio panic and totalitarian propaganda of the era.
Limitation: Effect ≠ Uniform because of individual differences, selective perception and social mediation
Subsequent research discredited the simplistic cause-effect schema. Audiences filter messages through pre-existing attitudes, group norms and critical faculties. Nonetheless, the hypodermic model remains a useful conceptual reference point, particularly when discussing moral panics, media violence debates and the rhetorical construction of ‘vulnerable’ audiences.
