1. Depreciation and the Reducing Balance Method |

In many mock papers, candidates are required to calculate depreciation using the reducing balance method and compare it with the straight-line method. A frequent error is applying the given percentage to the original cost rather than the net book value brought forward. For instance, if machinery cost £50,000 with a 20% reducing balance rate, the first year’s depreciation is £10,000, leaving a net book value of £40,000. In the second year, the 20% must be applied to £40,000, giving £8,000, not another £10,000. Candidates who use original cost for both years will overstate expenses and understate the carrying amount of the asset. The reducing balance method assumes that the asset delivers more economic benefit in its early years, making it suitable for technology or vehicles that lose value quickly.

Examiners also test the journal entries for depreciation. The correct double entry is a debit to the Depreciation Expense account and a credit to the Accumulated Depreciation account. A common mistake is crediting the asset account directly, which violates the principle that the historical cost of a non-current asset should remain visible on the statement of financial position. The accumulated depreciation account allows users to see both the original cost and the total depreciation charged to date, aiding transparency. When preparing final accounts, depreciation expense is shown in the income statement, while accumulated depreciation is deducted from the cost of non-current assets on the statement of financial position.

2. Bad Debts and Provision for Doubtful Debts |

Understanding the distinction between specific bad debts and a general provision for doubtful debts is essential. A bad debt occurs when a specific customer’s balance is deemed irrecoverable and must be written off completely. The double entry is to debit Bad Debts Expense and credit Trade Receivables. Once written off, the individual customer’s account is closed. A provision for doubtful debts, in contrast, is a general estimate of potential losses based on a percentage of trade receivables remaining after bad debts have been written off. This provision is an application of the prudence concept, ensuring that receivables are not overstated. In a mock exam, candidates often forget to deduct bad debts already written off before calculating the provision, leading to an overstated expense.

When the provision is adjusted at the year end, only the increase or decrease in the provision is charged to the income statement. For example, if an existing provision is £2,000 and the new provision required is £2,500, the income statement will show an additional expense of £500. If the new provision drops to £1,600, there will be a reduction in expense of £400, which is credited to the income statement. Candidates who charge the full new provision amount each year without allowing for the existing balance will double-count expenses, a serious error in OCR marking schemes.

3. Correction of Errors and the Suspense Account |

Mock exams frequently include a trial balance that does not agree, requiring the creation of a suspense account to temporarily hold the difference. Students must then correct a series of bookkeeping errors, such as omission, commission, principle, original entry, compensating errors, and complete reversal of entries. The key skill is to identify whether an error affects the trial balance agreement or not. Errors like complete reversal of entries, omission, and commission do not cause a trial balance imbalance and will not affect the suspense account. However, errors such as single entry, mis-posting of different amounts to debit and credit sides, or arithmetic mistakes in ledger accounts will require a suspense account adjustment.

When correcting errors, the journal entries must be precise. Suppose a payment of £350 for motor expenses was debited to the motor vehicles account. The correction requires a debit to Motor Expenses and a credit to Motor Vehicles, both for £350. If the error had caused the trial balance difference and a suspense account was opened, the correction might involve the suspense account. For instance, if a sale of £800 was recorded only on the credit side of the sales account, the debit side is missing entirely, causing a mismatch. The correction is to debit Suspense and credit Sales with £800, then clear the suspense account when the trial balance is balanced again. Many candidates lose marks by writing vague narratives or omitting the account names from journal entries.

4. Bank Reconciliation Statements |

The bank reconciliation is a frequent topic in unit tests. It requires students to reconcile the cash book balance with the bank statement balance by identifying timing differences and errors. Typical items include unpresented cheques, outstanding lodgements, bank charges, standing orders, direct debits, and dishonoured cheques. The starting point can be either the updated cash book balance or the bank statement balance, but the structure must be logical and clearly laid out. An error students often make is adding unpresented cheques to the bank statement balance instead of subtracting them. Remember, an unpresented cheque has been recorded in the cash book but not yet cleared by the bank, so it reduces the bank balance as per the bank’s records.

Another critical step is adjusting the cash book for items that appear on the bank statement but are not yet recorded by the business. These typically include bank charges, interest received, and dishonoured cheques. Once the cash book is updated to reflect these items, the adjusted cash book balance is carried to the reconciliation. The reconciliation then adjusts this balance for unpresented cheques and outstanding lodgements to arrive at the bank statement balance. Examiners may also provide a scenario where the opening balances differ, requiring a prior-period reconciliation. Candidates should always label each adjustment clearly and show workings to maximise method marks.

5. Accruals and Prepayments in Final Accounts |

Accruals and prepayments test a student’s grasp of the matching principle, which states that expenses and revenues should be recognised in the period to which they relate, regardless of when cash is paid or received. An accrual arises when an expense has been incurred but not yet paid by the year end, such as electricity used in December but billed in January. The adjusting entry debits the expense account and credits an Accruals liability account. A prepayment occurs when a payment is made in advance for a future period, such as insurance paid annually in June. At the year end, a portion of that payment relates to the next accounting period and must be carried forward as a current asset.

In a unit test, a typical question provides a trial balance with expense figures and additional notes about accruals or prepayments at the year start and year end. Students must calculate the amount to be charged to the income statement. For example, if the trial balance shows insurance of £3,000, the opening prepayment is £400, and the closing prepayment is £500, the amount chargeable is £3,000 + £400 – £500 = £2,900. Failing to adjust for opening balances is a common pitfall. Similarly, for accruals, if the trial balance shows wages of £25,000, opening accrual £1,200, and closing accrual £1,500, the total wages expense is £25,000 – £1,200 + £1,500 = £25,300. Methodical working is essential to avoid sign errors.

6. Income Statement Preparation for Sole Traders |

The income statement for a sole trader follows a structured format that begins with sales revenue and ends with net profit or loss. After sales, cost of goods sold is deducted to arrive at gross profit. Cost of goods sold is calculated as opening inventory plus purchases (net of returns) and carriage inwards, minus closing inventory. Carriage inwards is a cost of bringing goods into the business and is included in cost of sales, whereas carriage outwards is a distribution cost shown among operating expenses. Many candidates confuse the two, misplacing carriage outwards in cost of goods sold and inflating gross profit.

After gross profit, all other operating incomes such as rent received or commission income are added. Then operating expenses are listed and deducted. These include items like rent, rates, insurance, wages, depreciation, bad debts, provision adjustments, carriage outwards, and general administrative expenses. The resulting figure is net profit from operations. It is common in mock exams to see candidates forget to include depreciation or the provision for doubtful debts adjustment in the list of expenses, leading to an overstated profit figure. Examiners expect a clear, well-labelled statement with all adjustments fully incorporated and accuracy in arithmetic.

7. Statement of Financial Position and Working Capital |

The statement of financial position for a sole trader presents assets, liabilities, and capital at a specific point in time. Assets are split into non-current and current categories. Non-current assets include tangible assets like land, buildings, machinery, and vehicles, shown at net book value after deducting accumulated depreciation. Current assets include inventory, trade receivables (net of provision for doubtful debts), prepayments, and bank and cash balances. Current liabilities consist of trade payables, accruals, and bank overdrafts. The net current assets (current assets minus current liabilities) represent the working capital available to fund day-to-day operations. A negative working capital signals potential liquidity issues.

The capital section of the statement begins with the opening capital balance, adds net profit for the period (from the income statement), and subtracts drawings. Drawings are amounts taken by the owner for personal use and are not a business expense. A common error is to deduct drawings in the income statement, which misstates profit and breaches the entity concept. The closing capital figure must agree with the total of net assets. If the statement of financial position does not balance, students should check whether the net profit has been correctly transferred, whether all assets and liabilities have been included, and whether drawings have been properly accounted for. Working systematically through a checklist minimises such errors.

8. Ratio Analysis: Profitability and Liquidity |

Ratio analysis is a standard requirement in Pre-U OCR mock exams. Students must calculate and interpret ratios such as gross profit margin (gross profit ÷ revenue × 100), net profit margin (net profit ÷ revenue × 100), and return on capital employed (net profit ÷ capital employed × 100). These ratios measure a firm’s ability to generate profit from sales and capital. A declining gross profit margin may indicate rising cost of goods sold or falling selling prices, while an improving return on capital employed suggests more efficient use of owner’s funds. Candidates must not just compute ratios but also explain their significance in the context of the business scenario provided.

Liquidity ratios such as the current ratio (current assets ÷ current liabilities) and the quick ratio (liquid current assets ÷ current liabilities) assess a firm’s ability to meet short-term obligations. A current ratio below 1 indicates more current liabilities than assets, a warning sign. However, an excessively high current ratio might imply poor management of working capital, such as excessive inventory or idle cash. The quick ratio excludes inventory because it is not always easily convertible to cash. In the exam, candidates should compare ratios across periods or against industry benchmarks, avoid vague comments like ‘the ratio increased, which is good’, and instead provide carefully reasoned evaluations.

9. Marginal Costing and Contribution |

Marginal costing questions often appear in the second half of a Pre-U OCR mock paper and cover break-even analysis and contribution. Contribution per unit is calculated as selling price minus variable cost per unit. This contribution first covers total fixed costs, and anything remaining is profit. The break-even point in units is total fixed costs divided by contribution per unit. If a company has fixed costs of £60,000, a selling price of £25 per unit, and variable costs of £15 per unit, contribution per unit is £10, and the break-even point is 6,000 units. A common error is to confuse variable costs with total costs, leading to an incorrect contribution and break-even point.

Students must also be able to calculate the margin of safety and target profit output. The margin of safety is the difference between budgeted sales and break-even sales, expressed in units or as a percentage. If budgeted sales are 10,000 units and break-even is 6,000 units, the margin of safety is 4,000 units or 40%. To find the units needed to achieve a target profit, add the target profit to fixed costs and divide by contribution per unit. For a target profit of £20,000, the required units would be (£60,000 + £20,000) ÷ £10 = 8,000 units. Well-structured marginal costing statements clearly separate fixed and variable costs, which examiners highly value.

10. Budgeting and Variance Analysis |

Budgeting questions test a student’s ability to prepare cash budgets and flexed budgets, and to calculate and interpret variances. A cash budget forecasts cash inflows and outflows over a period, highlighting potential liquidity surpluses or shortages. Common inflows include cash sales, receipts from trade receivables, and loans; outflows include payments for purchases, wages, rent, and capital expenditure. Timing is crucial. A sale made on credit in January with a two-month delay in receipt will appear as a cash inflow in March. Candidates who record all sales as immediate cash inflows will produce an inaccurate budget and miss the purpose of managing cash flow.

Variance analysis compares actual performance with budgeted figures. For a sales variance, if budgeted sales were £100,000 and actual sales were £90,000, there is an adverse variance of £10,000. Total cost variances can be broken down into price and usage components. For materials, the materials price variance = (standard price – actual price) × actual quantity purchased. The materials usage variance = (standard quantity for actual output – actual quantity used) × standard price. Students should clearly label each variance as favourable or adverse and link them to possible causes, such as supplier price changes or production inefficiencies, to demonstrate higher-order evaluation skills.

11. Accounting Concepts and Conventions |

Examiners at OCR regularly include short-answer or scenario-based questions on accounting concepts. The fundamental concepts include going concern, accruals (matching), consistency, prudence (conservatism), materiality, business entity, and historical cost. Understanding these concepts is essential not only for answering theory questions but also for justifying treatments adopted in the accounts. For example, valuing closing inventory at the lower of cost and net realisable value is a direct application of the prudence concept. Changing depreciation methods from year to year without justification breaches the consistency concept, making financial statements less comparable.

In mock exams, a typical question might describe a situation where the owner uses business funds to pay for a family holiday. The candidate must identify that this violates the business entity concept, which treats the business as separate from its owner. The correct accounting treatment is to record the payment as drawings, not as an expense. Another scenario might involve a leaking roof repair that extends the building’s useful life. Instead of treating it as a revenue expense, it should be capitalised as an asset improvement. Careful application of concepts differentiates high-scoring students from those who only memorise procedures.

12. Final Exam Strategy and Review Techniques |

Success in the Pre-U OCR Accounting mock exam is not solely about knowledge; it depends equally on exam technique and methodical practice. Start by reading the entire paper carefully, noting the mark allocation for each question. Questions with higher marks typically require detailed workings, explanations, and application to the case study. Allocate time proportionally: if a question is worth 25% of the marks, spend roughly 25% of the time on it. Leave spaces or cross out errors neatly; a messy script can obscure correct figures and prevent examiners from awarding marks. For calculation-heavy questions, always show workings even if the final answer is wrong — OCR awards methods marks for correct application of principles.

After completing a mock, the most valuable learning activity is a thorough review. Do not just mark answers right or wrong. For each error, identify the root cause: was it a conceptual misunderstanding, a calculation slip, or a misinterpretation of the question wording? Rewrite incorrect journal entries and recalculate financial statements from scratch. Create a personal error log to track recurring mistakes, such as omitting to adjust for opening accruals or misclassifying carriage outwards. Review sessions with peers can also expose alternative approaches and deepen understanding. Systematic review turns mock exams from a mere testing event into a powerful engine of improvement.
