Pre-U OCR Philosophy: Quick Reference Handbook of Formulas & Theorems | Pre-U OCR

📚 Pre-U OCR Philosophy: Quick Reference Handbook of Formulas & Theorems | Pre-U OCR

Philosophy, unlike mathematics, does not traffic in numerical formulae, yet its arguments are driven by logical structures, conceptual distinctions, and recurrent patterns of reasoning that function much like ‘theorems’. This handbook gathers the essential propositional ‘formulas’ – from modus ponens to the principle of sufficient reason – that every Pre-U OCR Philosophy candidate should have at their mental fingertips. Each entry unpacks a core idea, provides its canonical formulation, and illustrates how it operates within landmark philosophical debates.

1. Modus Ponens & Modus Tollens |

Modus ponens (the way of affirming) takes the form: If P then Q; P; therefore Q. It is the fundamental engine of deductive inference. Modus tollens (the way of denying) runs: If P then Q; not Q; therefore not P. Together they form the backbone of conditional reasoning in philosophy, from Descartes’ cogito to contemporary arguments against dualism. Recognising these forms allows a candidate to test the validity of an argument without being distracted by content.

Modus ponens: (P → Q), P ⊢ Q
Modus tollens: (P → Q), ¬Q ⊢ ¬P

In the Ontological Argument, Anselm effectively employs a modus tollens: if God exists only in the understanding, then a greater being is conceivable (existing in reality); but God is that than which nothing greater can be conceived; therefore, God does not exist only in the understanding. The logical skeleton helps to isolate where a critic, such as Gaunilo, must attack – he must reject the conditional premise, not the form.

2. Reductio ad Absurdum |

Reductio ad absurdum (reduction to absurdity) proves a proposition by showing that its negation leads to a contradiction or to an obviously false statement. Formally, to prove P, assume not P, derive a contradiction (Q and not Q), and conclude P. It is a mainstay of philosophical argument, employed by Plato to refute relativism, by Aristotle to defend the law of non-contradiction, and by contemporary philosophers to challenge scepticism.

Consider the sceptical claim that no knowledge is possible. If we know that no knowledge is possible, we have a counterexample; if we do not know it, the claim is unjustified. Either way, the assertion self-destructs. This is a classic reductio, exposing the performative inconsistency of global scepticism. Acquaintance with the structure allows you to spot when a position undermines itself, which is a recurring demand in OCR essays.

3. The Principle of Sufficient Reason |

The Principle of Sufficient Reason (PSR) states that there must be a sufficient reason why anything is the case rather than not. In Leibniz’s formulation, ‘no fact can be real or existing and no statement true unless there is a sufficient reason why it should be so and not otherwise’. The PSR underpins cosmological arguments: if the universe exists, there must be a reason for its existence, and that reason is ultimately God.

Crucially, the PSR is not the same as the claim that we can always find the reason; it is a metaphysical principle about reality itself. Critics like Hume question whether the principle is a necessity of thought or merely a psychological habit. When evaluating cosmological arguments, a candidate must decide if the PSR is rationally obligatory. If it is, versions of the argument from contingency gain tremendous force; if not, they crumble.

4. Ockham’s Razor |

Ockham’s Razor is the principle of ontological parsimony: entities should not be multiplied beyond necessity. The classic formulation is ‘plurality is not to be posited without necessity’. In philosophy of mind, it favours physicalism over substance dualism, because dualism posits an extra substance (mind or soul) without explanatory gain that cannot be achieved by material processes. In philosophy of religion, it challenges the postulation of a divine being if naturalistic explanations suffice.

It is not, however, a law of logic but a heuristic. The razor does not tell us which theory is true; it tells us which theory we should prefer, all else being equal. In your exam, deploying the razor means arguing that a simpler explanation – say, an error theory of moral language over a non-naturalist realist account – has the initial advantage, and the burden of proof shifts to the more extravagant view.

5. The Is-Ought Gap (Hume’s Law) |

David Hume observed that moral philosophers routinely move from statements of fact (‘is’) to statements of value (‘ought’) without providing any logical bridge. The is-ought gap is not a theorem in the formal sense but a demarcation of a logical chasm: no set of purely descriptive premises can entail an evaluative conclusion without at least one normative premise. This principle is foundational to meta-ethics and challenges any naturalistic definition of ‘good’.

G.E. Moore’s open-question argument is a descendant of Hume’s insight. For any natural property N that a utilitarian might identify with goodness (e.g., pleasure), it is always an open question whether something that possesses N is actually good. This shows that ‘good’ cannot be synonymous with any natural property. When writing about ethical naturalism, you should explicitly trace the argument back to the underlying logical point: you cannot define a normative concept in purely descriptive terms without losing normativity.

6. The Tripartite Definition of Knowledge |

The classical formula for knowledge is: Knowledge = Justified True Belief (JTB). A subject S knows that P if and only if (i) P is true, (ii) S believes that P, and (iii) S is justified in believing that P. This definition serves as the target for counterexamples in epistemology, most famously Edmund Gettier’s cases, which purport to show that JTB is not sufficient for knowledge.

A typical Gettier case: Smith has strong evidence that Jones owns a Ford (Jones has always had a Ford, just showed Smith the papers). Smith also has a friend, Brown, whose location is unknown. From ‘Jones owns a Ford’, Smith deduces ‘Either Jones owns a Ford or Brown is in Barcelona’. As it happens, Jones has just sold his Ford, but Brown is, by sheer coincidence, in Barcelona. Smith’s belief is true, justified, but intuitively not knowledge. The ‘Gettier formula’ reveals that justification must connect to truth in the right way – a theme that drives reliabilist, causal, and virtue-theoretic responses.

7. The Cartesian Circle |

The Cartesian Circle is the alleged circularity in Descartes’ Meditations: Descartes needs clear and distinct perceptions to prove that God exists, but then he needs God’s existence to guarantee that clear and distinct perceptions are reliable. If the argument for God’s existence relies on clear and distinct perception, and the reliability of clear and distinct perception relies on God, Descartes’ reasoning appears to chase its own tail.

Formally, it can be represented as: (1) I can trust clear and distinct perceptions only if God exists. (2) I know God exists through clear and distinct perception. Hence, the trustworthiness of the cognitive act used to reach (2) is the very thing at issue. Defenders of Descartes, such as Alan Gewirth, argue that the certainty of particular clear and distinct perceptions, like the cogito, is immediate and does not need a divine guarantee, while the general reliability of memory-based deductions does. This distinction allows a linear reading. Any evaluation of the Meditations must confront this structural puzzle.

8. The Problem of Evil – Logical and Evidential Forms |

The logical problem of evil claims that the existence of an omnipotent, perfectly good God is logically incompatible with the existence of evil. The classical formula is a reductio: If a perfectly good God exists, He would want to prevent all evil; if an omnipotent God exists, He could prevent all evil; evil exists; therefore, such a God does not exist. The free will defence, by Alvin Plantinga, refutes the logical version by showing that it is possible that God could not create a world with free creatures who never choose evil, because that would require determining their choices, which is logically impossible.

The evidential problem, championed by William Rowe, shifts from logical incompatibility to probability: the amount and distribution of seemingly pointless, horrendous evil makes the existence of a theistic God improbable. The ‘formula’ here is a Bayesian-style inference: Pr(God | gratuitous evil) is very low. This demands not a logical defence but a theodicy that offers reasons why God might permit such evils. Examining these two distinct structures prevents the common error of conflating logical and evidential challenges in an exam essay.

9. The Categorical Imperative – Universal Law Formula |

Kant’s Categorical Imperative is the ‘formula’ of moral reasoning for deontologists. Its first formulation, the Formula of Universal Law, commands: ‘Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.’ The test is one of consistency: if the maxim of your action cannot be conceived as a universal law without contradiction, the action is impermissible.

Kant identifies two types of contradiction: a contradiction in conception and a contradiction in the will. The former occurs with maxims such as making a false promise to get money. If everyone made false promises, the institution of promising would collapse, making the original maxim inconceivable. The latter occurs with a maxim of refusing to help others: you can conceive a world where no one helps, but you cannot rationally will it because you might need help yourself. Mastering these distinctions is crucial for applying Kantian ethics to any given scenario in the OCR paper.

10. The Principle of Utility |

The Principle of Utility, the central theorem of classical utilitarianism, states that an action is right if and only if it produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. Formally expressed by Bentham, it treats pleasure and pain as sovereign masters, and the moral calculus reduces to a cost-benefit analysis of hedonistic units. The formula demands impartiality: each person’s happiness counts for one, and no one’s for more than one.

Mill refines the formula by introducing qualitative distinctions among pleasures, famously asserting that it is ‘better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied’. This modification turns the calculus into a more complex algorithm: higher pleasures receive a weighted multiplier. Critiques such as the injustice objection (punishing an innocent person could maximise overall utility) show that the straightforward Benthamite formula clashes with our pre-theoretical moral intuitions. Consequently, a utilitarian must either bite the bullet or modify the formula, as rule utilitarians do by shifting the calculation to the level of general rules.

11. The Mind-Body Supervenience Thesis |

Supervenience is the minimal physicalist ‘formula’ to capture the dependence of the mental on the physical without reduction: A-properties supervene on B-properties if and only if there cannot be an A-difference without a B-difference. In philosophy of mind, the claim is that mental states supervene on physical states – no two possible worlds can be identical in all physical respects yet differ in some mental respect.

Supervenience allows a kind of non-reductive physicalism: mental properties are not identical to physical properties (token or type identity), yet they are wholly determined by them. Frank Jackson’s knowledge argument – Mary the colour scientist who knows all physical facts but learns something new upon seeing red for the first time – challenges supervenience by attempting to demonstrate that there can be a mental difference (new phenomenal knowledge) without any new physical fact, thus denying the physicalist formula. A student must be able to adjudicate whether the intuition that Mary learns something shows a failure of supervenience or merely reveals a different kind of knowledge.

12. The Verifiability Principle |

Verificationism, championed by the logical positivists, offered a criterion of meaning: a statement is cognitively meaningful if and only if it is either analytically true (true by definition) or empirically verifiable. The formula was designed to expose metaphysical, theological, and ethical claims as literally meaningless – not false, but nonsensical. Ayer formulated a strong and a weak version: strong verifiability demands conclusive verification, while weak verifiability requires only that some sensory observations are relevant to determining its truth or falsehood.

The principle self-destructs as a philosophical theorem: the verifiability principle itself is neither analytically true nor empirically verifiable. This is the classic reductio against it. Furthermore, holistic challenges by Quine demonstrated that individual statements cannot be tested in isolation. Nevertheless, the verificationist impulse survives in the demand for empirical anchorage of our concepts, and the criticism that religious language, for instance, is ‘unfalsifiable’ echoes the verifiability spirit. A strong essay will note this legacy while exposing the principle’s fatal flaw.
