The Marketing Mix: Product and Price |

📚 The Marketing Mix: Product and Price |

Every business must make fundamental decisions about the goods and services it offers and the prices it charges. In the marketing mix, ‘product’ is not just the physical item but the entire bundle of benefits that satisfies customer needs, while ‘price’ directly reflects value, market positioning and profitability. This article breaks down the key concepts, models and pricing strategies that A-Level Business students need to master for the Cambridge syllabus.

1. Understanding the Marketing Mix |

The marketing mix refers to the set of controllable tactical marketing tools that a firm blends to produce the response it wants from the target market. Traditionally known as the 4Ps – product, price, place and promotion – it forms the core of any marketing strategy. Product and price are considered the foundation, because without a product that meets customer demands and a price that customers are willing to pay, the other elements cannot function effectively.

An integrated marketing mix ensures consistency: a premium product must be supported by a premium price, exclusive distribution and aspirational promotion. Misalignment, such as a high-quality product sold at a rock-bottom price through discount stores, confuses customers and damages brand equity.

2. Defining Product in the Marketing Mix |

A product is anything that can be offered to a market to satisfy a want or need. It includes physical objects, services, persons, places, organisations and ideas. In a business context, product is viewed on three levels: the core product (the basic benefit or problem-solving service), the actual product (features, design, quality, brand name, packaging) and the augmented product (additional services such as warranty, after-sales support, delivery and credit).

For example, a smartphone’s core product is connectivity and communication; the actual product is the device with its screen, processor and operating system; the augmented product includes the warranty, customer helpline and software updates. Businesses that differentiate successfully at the augmented level can build lasting competitive advantage.

3. Product Classification |

Products are broadly classified into consumer goods, industrial goods and services. Consumer goods can be further divided into convenience goods (frequent purchase, minimal effort, e.g. bread), shopping goods (compared on quality, price, e.g. clothing), speciality goods (unique characteristics, brand loyalty, e.g. luxury watches) and unsought goods (not actively sought by consumers, e.g. life insurance).

Industrial goods include raw materials, components, installations and supplies that are used in the production process. Services are intangible, inseparable, perishable and variable, requiring unique marketing approaches compared to physical goods. Understanding product type shapes the entire marketing approach, especially pricing and distribution.

4. The Product Life Cycle (PLC) |

The product life cycle describes the stages a product goes through from introduction to eventual decline. The five typical stages are development, introduction, growth, maturity and decline. Each stage has distinct implications for sales, profits, competition and marketing mix decisions.

During the introduction stage, sales grow slowly, profits are negative due to high promotional and development costs, and pricing may be either high (skimming) or low (penetration). In growth, sales accelerate, profits improve, and new competitors enter. Maturity sees sales peak and profit margins begin to erode as competition intensifies, requiring product modifications and promotional incentives. Decline witnesses falling sales and profits, often leading to product withdrawal.

PLC stages: Introduction → Growth → Maturity → Decline

A business should actively manage its product portfolio to avoid having too many products in the decline stage and to ensure new products are being developed to replace them.

5. Extension Strategies for the PLC |

Extension strategies aim to prolong the maturity stage or revive a declining product. Common approaches include product modification (adding new features, changing design or packaging), finding new markets (exporting or targeting different demographic segments), changing the marketing mix elements (intensive advertising, price promotions) and encouraging more frequent use of the product.

For example, a breakfast cereal brand might introduce a new size pack, launch a health-focused variant, or reposition the product towards adult consumers by stressing fibre content. Extension strategies can be more cost-effective than developing entirely new products, but there is a risk of only delaying inevitable decline.

6. The Boston Matrix and Product Portfolio Analysis |

The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) matrix helps businesses analyse their product portfolio based on relative market share and market growth rate. Products are classified into four categories: stars (high share, high growth), cash cows (high share, low growth), question marks or problem children (low share, high growth) and dogs (low share, low growth).

Stars require heavy investment to sustain growth but generate substantial income. Cash cows produce steady cash that can be used to support other products. Question marks are uncertain; they need careful analysis to decide whether to invest heavily or divest. Dogs are typically candidates for phasing out because they consume resources without generating significant returns. A balanced portfolio contains cash cows and stars, with a few question marks being developed as future stars.

7. The Role of Branding and Packaging |

Branding is the process of creating a distinctive name, symbol or design that identifies and differentiates a product from competitors. Successful branding builds brand loyalty, enables premium pricing, facilitates line extensions and acts as a barrier to entry. Brand equity – the value of the brand – arises from customer awareness, perceived quality and associations.

Packaging serves both functional and marketing roles. It protects the product, provides information, aids convenience and acts as a silent salesperson by attracting attention through colour, shape and graphics. Environmentally friendly packaging can also be a point of differentiation. In competitive markets, an instantly recognisable packaging design supports brand reinforcement at the point of sale.

8. Introduction to Pricing Strategies |

Price is the amount of money customers must pay to obtain a product. Pricing decisions are critical because price is the only element of the marketing mix that directly generates revenue; all others represent costs. The chosen price must reflect customer perceptions of value, cover costs and support the brand’s market positioning, while considering competitors’ actions.

Pricing strategies are broadly divided into cost-based, competition-based and value-based approaches. A firm may adopt a single strategy or combine several depending on market conditions, product life cycle stage and corporate objectives. Pricing is dynamic, requiring regular review.

9. Cost-Based Pricing |

Cost-based pricing determines price by adding a markup to the cost of producing or acquiring the product. The simplest method is cost-plus pricing, where a fixed percentage is added to unit cost. The formula is:

Price = Unit cost + (Unit cost × Markup percentage)   or   Price = Unit cost ÷ (1 − desired return on sales)

Another variant is break-even pricing, where the price is set at the point where total revenue equals total cost. The break-even quantity is calculated as:

Break-even quantity = Fixed costs ÷ (Price − Variable cost per unit)

While cost-based pricing is simple and ensures that costs are covered, it ignores demand conditions and competitor pricing. A manufacturer of bespoke furniture may use cost-plus to guarantee a margin on each custom piece, but it risks missing out on higher profits if customers are willing to pay more, or being uncompetitive if rivals price lower.

10. Market-Oriented Pricing: Skimming and Penetration |

Price skimming involves setting a high initial price for a new, innovative product to maximise revenue from early adopters before gradually lowering the price to attract more price-sensitive segments. This is effective when the product has strong differentiation, substantial perceived value and limited initial competition.

Penetration pricing sets a low initial price to quickly gain market share, build a customer base and discourage competitors. It is suitable for mass-market products with elastic demand and the presence of economies of scale. The risk is that low prices may be associated with low quality, and it will be difficult to raise prices later.

11. Other Pricing Strategies |

Competition-based pricing sets prices relative to competitors’ offerings. Going-rate pricing simply charges the prevailing market price, common in commodity markets. Destructive pricing (predatory pricing) involves temporarily slashing prices to force competitors out, which may be illegal in many countries.

Psychological pricing takes advantage of consumer perceptions. Charm pricing (£9.99 instead of £10) makes a product feel cheaper. Prestige pricing maintains a high price to signal exclusivity and luxury status. Bundle pricing offers several products together at a perceived discount.

Dynamic pricing adjusts prices in real time based on demand, time or customer segment. Airlines, ride-sharing apps and e-commerce platforms use algorithms to change prices. While this can maximise revenue, it risks alienating customers if perceived as unfair.

12. Price Elasticity of Demand and Pricing Decisions |

Price elasticity of demand (PED) measures the responsiveness of quantity demanded to a change in price. It is calculated as:

PED = % change in quantity demanded ÷ % change in price

If PED is greater than 1, demand is elastic: a price cut increases total revenue, while a price rise reduces it. If PED is less than 1, demand is inelastic: total revenue moves in the same direction as price. This knowledge is vital for pricing decisions. A cinema with elastic demand for daytime screenings could lower prices to fill seats and increase revenue. A life-saving drug with inelastic demand allows the manufacturer to set higher prices without a proportionally large fall in demand.

Businesses should assess PED before changing prices. However, PED estimates are influenced by availability of substitutes, proportion of income spent, necessity and time period. Pricing strategies therefore must be informed by both quantitative analysis and qualitative judgement.
