The Activate 1 Workbook is a practical companion to the KS3 science course, offering short-answer questions, matching tasks and diagram-based exercises. It helps students practise scientific vocabulary, interpret data and apply key ideas from biology, chemistry and physics.

1. Working Scientifically |

Workbook questions on scientific enquiry usually ask you to identify the independent variable, dependent variable and control variables. A fair test changes only the independent variable, while all other factors are kept the same so the results are valid.

Graph work is also frequent: label the x-axis with the independent variable and the y-axis with the dependent variable, include units, and draw a smooth line of best fit. Always record observations in a results table before plotting.

2. Cells | 细胞

Typical questions ask you to label an animal cell and a plant cell. Plant cells have a cell wall, chloroplasts and a large permanent vacuole, whereas animal cells do not. Both have a nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane and mitochondria.

You also need to use the microscope formula:

total magnification = eyepiece magnification × objective magnification

3. Structure and Function of Body Systems |

This unit links organs to organ systems. Examples include the breathing system, the circulatory system and the skeletal system. Workbook questions often ask you to place structures in order, such as trachea → bronchi → bronchioles → alveoli.

Gas exchange happens in the alveoli, where oxygen moves into the blood and carbon dioxide moves out. In muscles and joints, antagonistic muscle pairs contract and relax to move bones at joints, and ligaments and cartilage support movement.

4. Reproduction | 生殖

You should know the main structures of the male and female reproductive systems and their roles. Fertilisation occurs when the nucleus of a sperm cell fuses with the nucleus of an egg cell, producing a zygote that divides to form an embryo.

Puberty causes physical changes such as growth spurts, voice changes and the start of periods. Plant reproduction is also part of this topic: pollination transfers pollen to the stigma, and fertilisation leads to seed formation
