Conservation of Energy |

📚 Conservation of Energy |

Energy is one of the most important ideas in KS3 science. This CIE KS3 revision guide explains the conservation of energy, energy stores, transfers, wasted energy and efficiency. It also includes worksheet-style examples to help you practise and prepare for tests.

1. What is Energy? |

Energy is the ability to do work. In physics, energy is measured in joules (J). One joule is the energy transferred when a force of 1 newton moves an object 1 metre.

Energy cannot be seen directly, but scientists can observe its effects. A glowing bulb, a moving car, a hot drink and a stretched spring all show that energy is present in different ways.

2. Energy Stores |

Scientists describe energy as being stored in different ways. At KS3, the main energy stores include kinetic, gravitational potential, chemical, elastic potential, thermal, nuclear, and electrostatic or magnetic stores.

Example
Kinetic 动能 A moving bicycle
A book on a high shelf
Chemical 化学能 Food, fuel, batteries
A stretched rubber band
Thermal 热能 A hot cup of tea
Nuclear 核能 The core of an atom

A moving car has kinetic energy because it is moving. Food, fuel and batteries store chemical energy. A ball held above the ground has gravitational potential energy because of its height.

3. The Law of Conservation of Energy |

The law of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be transferred from one store to another, or changed from one form to another. The total energy before a change is always equal to the total energy after the change.

total energy before = total energy after

This law applies to every energy change in the universe. It applies to burning fuel, falling objects, electric circuits and living cells.

If some energy seems to disappear, it has actually been transferred to the surroundings, usually as heat. Energy is never lost.

4. Energy Transfers |

In any process, energy moves from one store to another. For example, when you switch on a kettle, electrical energy is transferred to the thermal energy store of the water and the heating element.

A torch transfers energy from the chemical store of the battery to the electrical pathway, then to the thermal store of the bulb and finally to light. Some energy is transferred to the surroundings as heat.

A falling ball transfers gravitational potential energy to kinetic energy as it speeds up. When it hits the ground, energy is transferred to thermal and sound stores.

5. Useful and Wasted Energy |

In most energy transfers, only some of the input energy becomes useful output energy. The rest is wasted, usually as heat or sound. Wasted energy is not destroyed; it spreads into the surroundings.

A light bulb is designed to produce light, but it also gets hot. For a filament bulb, most of the input electrical energy is wasted as heat, and only a small fraction becomes useful light.

In a car engine, chemical energy from petrol is transferred into kinetic energy to move the car. However, a large amount is also transferred as heat to the engine, exhaust gases and surroundings.

6. Dissipation and Spread |

When energy is wasted, it becomes spread out or dissipated. Heat energy from a hot cup of tea gradually warms the air around it. The energy is still there, but it is now less useful because it is too spread out.

Dissipated energy is very difficult to gather back and use again. For example, the kinetic energy of a car becomes heat in the brakes and in the road. Once it has spread out, it cannot easily be turned back into movement.
