A well-designed training session considers the athlete’s age, fitness level, injury history and the demands of the chosen activity.

A macrocycle is the whole season, a mesocycle lasts several weeks, and a microcycle is usually one week.

For a squash player, relevant tests might include the multi-stage fitness test for aerobic endurance, a 30 m sprint for speed, the handgrip dynamometer for strength, and the Illinois agility test for agility.

The design of a training session must select methods that match the energy system and fitness component being targeted. Continuous training develops aerobic endurance; interval training can develop speed or anaerobic capacity depending on work-to-rest ratios; fartlek training combines continuous and interval elements; circuit training develops general fitness; weight training develops strength, power or muscular endurance.
