The Water Cycle and Drainage Basin Systems |

📚 The Water Cycle and Drainage Basin Systems |

In AQA A-Level Geography, the water cycle is a core physical systems topic that links atmospheric, lithospheric, biospheric and cryospheric processes. Understanding the drainage basin as an open system helps explain how water moves through stores and fluxes at a range of scales, and why river regimes respond to physical and human factors.

1. The Global Water Cycle |

The global hydrological cycle is a closed system at the planetary scale: no water enters or leaves the Earth system, but water is continuously transferred between major stores by processes driven by solar energy and gravity.

Oceans account for about 97% of global water. Freshwater is dominated by ice caps and glaciers, while rivers, lakes, soil moisture and atmospheric vapour together form less than 1% of the total. The tiny atmospheric store is nevertheless vital because it moves water rapidly across space.

  • Oceans: approximately 97% of total water —
  • Ice caps and glaciers: approximately 2% —
  • Groundwater: approximately 0.7% —
  • Atmosphere: approximately 0.001% —

2. Drainage Basin as an Open System |

A drainage basin is an open subsystem within the closed global cycle. It receives water as precipitation and loses water through evapotranspiration and river discharge. The boundary is the watershed, beyond which water drains to a different basin.

Within the basin, water moves through stores such as interception, surface storage, soil water, groundwater and channel storage. Inputs, outputs, stores and flows can all be measured over time to construct a water balance for the system.

3. Precipitation Inputs |

Precipitation type and intensity shape how a basin responds to rainfall. Orographic rainfall occurs when moist air is forced to rise over hills, producing high totals on windward slopes. Frontal rainfall is associated with depressions and can be prolonged; convective rainfall is intense and short-lived.

In UK upland catchments, annual precipitation often exceeds 2,000 mm, while lowland eastern areas may receive below 600 mm. Snow can act as a temporary store until melt releases water in spring.

4. Flows and Transfers |

Water is transferred by interception, throughfall, stemflow, infiltration, percolation, throughflow, groundwater flow and channel flow. Interception stores water on vegetation; some evaporates directly, some reaches the ground as throughfall or stemflow.

Infiltration is the movement of water into the soil. When rainfall intensity exceeds infiltration capacity, overland flow occurs. Percolation is the deeper movement into permeable rocks, recharging groundwater, which later returns to rivers as baseflow.

5. Storages in the Basin |

Stores differ in size and residence time. The atmosphere holds little water but turns it over in about ten days. Rivers typically hold water for about two weeks, while groundwater can remain in storage for centuries.

In peat catchments, organic soils store large quantities of water and slow the release of runoff. Drainage ditches lower the water table, shrink the peat and reduce this sponge effect, increasing the risk of rapid runoff.

6. The Water Balance |

The water balance is a simple accounting equation that links inputs, outputs and changes in storage. It is usually written as:

P = Q + E ± ΔS

where P is precipitation, Q is streamflow or runoff, E is evapotranspiration, and ΔS is the change in water stored in soil, rock and surface water. A positive ΔS means the basin is gaining water; a negative ΔS means it is losing water.

7. Storm Hydrographs |

A storm hydrograph shows how river discharge changes during and after a rainstorm. Key features include the rising limb, peak discharge, lag time, falling limb and baseflow. Lag time is the delay between peak rainfall and peak discharge.

Catchments with steep slopes, impermeable rocks, saturated soils or urban surfaces typically have short lag times and high peak discharge. Catchments with permeable rocks, dense forests or dry soils have longer lag times and lower peaks.

Factor Effect on hydrograph
Urban surfaces Shorter lag time, higher peak discharge
Forest cover Longer lag time, lower peak discharge
Permeable rock More infiltration, lower peak discharge

8. Human Impacts on the Water Cycle |

Human activities modify the drainage basin’s stores and fluxes. Urbanisation replaces vegetated surfaces with impermeable concrete and tarmac, reducing infiltration and increasing surface runoff. Storm drains move water quickly into channels, steepening the rising limb and raising flood peaks.

Deforestation removes interception storage and reduces evapotranspiration, increasing runoff and soil erosion. Agriculture can compact soil, lower infiltration and add field drains that accelerate water transfer. Reservoirs store water behind dams, regulating downstream discharge but also increasing evaporation and altering ecosystems.

9. Flooding and Management |

Flooding occurs when river discharge exceeds channel capacity, usually after prolonged or intense rainfall, snowmelt or saturated ground. Flood risk is a function of hazard, exposure and vulnerability, not simply the size of the flood.

Hard engineering, such as dams, embankments and channel straightening, aims to keep water away from people. Soft engineering, such as floodplain restoration, wetland creation and afforestation, increases storage and slows runoff. AQA questions often ask students to evaluate both approaches using named examples.

10. Exemplar: The River Exe Catchment |

The River Exe catchment in Devon is a useful UK exemplar for the water cycle. It covers around 600 km² and includes the Wimbleball Reservoir, upland Exmoor peatlands and a mix of farmland and settlements. Annual rainfall exceeds 1,500 mm on Exmoor but is lower towards the estuary.

Historical drainage of Exmoor peat for rough grazing lowered the water table and increased rapid runoff, discolouration and carbon loss. Restoration projects have blocked drainage ditches to rewet the peat, raising water levels, slowing flow and improving water quality. This shows how managing one store—peat soil—can alter basin outputs and reduce flood risk downstream.

In AQA exam answers, define key terms precisely and use them in context. For example, do not confuse infiltration with percolation or throughflow with groundwater flow. Use the water balance equation when explaining changes in storage, and support hydrograph answers with specific factors such as land use, rock type and antecedent moisture.

When asked to assess flood management, discuss both hard and soft strategies and refer to a named river basin. A well-structured answer uses the system concepts of inputs, outputs, stores and flows to explain cause and effect rather than simply describing events.
