A-Level CAIE Philosophy: Winter Intensive Revision Plan | A-Level CAIE

📚 A-Level CAIE Philosophy: Winter Intensive Revision Plan | A-Level CAIE

Winter break is not a pause from thinking; it is the moment when scattered ideas become a systematic argument. For CAIE A-Level Philosophy students, this is the best chance to transform familiar notes into exam-ready reasoning and evaluation.

1. Why a Winter Intensive Plan? |

The winter holiday offers a rare block of uninterrupted study time before the CAIE A-Level Philosophy papers. Without a plan, many students reread notes passively and enter the exam with familiar ideas but weak essay control. An intensive plan turns revision into active reconstruction: you re-test definitions, rebuild arguments, and practise evaluation under timed conditions.

A strong winter plan should be short enough to sustain intensity and specific enough to target the assessment objectives. It should balance content review, active recall, essay writing, and timed past papers rather than simply reading through the textbook again.

2. Know Your Syllabus: CAIE 9694 at a Glance | 了解大纲:CAIE 9694 一览

CAIE A-Level Philosophy (9694) is assessed through written papers that reward precise knowledge and sustained evaluation. While unit titles may vary slightly by syllabus year, the core territory usually includes epistemology, ethics, philosophy of religion, political philosophy, and/or philosophy of mind. Begin by downloading the latest 9694 syllabus and marking every assessment objective beside your notes.

CAIE A-Level

  • AO1 Knowledge and understanding | AO1
  • AO2 Analysis and evaluation | AO2

Knowing these objectives changes the way you revise. Instead of simply memorising who said what, you practise using that knowledge in the way examiners actually mark.

3. Audit Your Strengths and Gaps |

Before making a timetable, complete a diagnostic grid. List each topic and give yourself a traffic-light rating: green for confident, amber for partial, red for weak. Use a short past-paper question or a 10-minute mind map to test each rating. This audit prevents the common mistake of revising favourite topics and avoiding difficult ones.

After the audit, assign the most study hours to red and amber topics. Green topics still need spaced practice, but they should not dominate your timetable.

4. Weekly Timetable: A 4–6 Week Sprint |

Divide the winter break into a 4–6 week sprint: weeks 1–2 rebuild content, weeks 3–4 intensify essay practice, and the final week is for timed papers and memory consolidation. Each day should combine content review, active recall, and one essay paragraph. Avoid spending a whole day on a single theme; interleave topics to improve long-term retrieval.

This timetable is deliberately flexible: adjust topics to your syllabus, but keep the weekly rhythm of build, apply, and test.

5. AO1 Mastery: Textual Knowledge and Arguments | AO1

AO1 marks depend on accurate definitions, clear paraphrase, and correct attribution of arguments. For every philosopher you study, build a four-line entry: (1) the key claim, (2) the argument in premise-conclusion form, (3) one supporting example, and (4) a likely exam trigger word. This makes recall faster under pressure.

Gettier shows that justified true belief is not sufficient for knowledge | 盖梯尔表明,得到辩护的真信念不足以构成知识。
  • Argument | 论证:Premise: a justified true belief can depend on luck | 前提:一个得到辩护的真信念可能依赖运气;Conclusion: knowledge requires more than JTB | 结论:知识需要的不只是 JTB。
  • Example | 例子:Smith and the job / ten coins case | 史密斯与工作/十枚硬币案例。

AO1 also includes accurate technical vocabulary. Write definitions in full sentences and test yourself by turning headings into questions: ‘What is a necessary condition?’ or ‘How does act utilitarianism define right action?’

6. AO2 Evaluation: Building Critical Responses | AO2

AO2 is where top candidates separate themselves. Evaluation is not saying “I agree” or “I disagree”; it is testing whether a claim survives objections. Use the PEEL-C structure: Point, Evidence, Evaluation, Link, and Counter. For each argument, write one paragraph that supports it and one that challenges it before reaching a justified conclusion.

For example, on utilitarianism, do not merely state that it ignores individual rights. Show how the structure of act utilitarianism leads to that problem, then consider whether rule utilitarianism can answer it, and finally judge whether the objection is decisive or merely partial.

A good evaluative paragraph therefore has a double movement: it presents an objection and then asks whether the theory can absorb or revise itself. This is what examiners mean by ‘sustained critical evaluation’.

7. Essay Structure That Scores |

CAIE philosophy essays reward structure as much as content. A safe high-scoring shape is: introduction with a clear thesis, two or three main paragraphs, each with an argument and an objection, a counterclaim paragraph, and a conclusion that directly answers the question. Use signpost words such as ‘therefore’, ‘however’, and ‘it follows that’ to make reasoning visible.

Define terms and state thesis | 定义术语并陈述论点 10–15%
Conclusion | 结论 Answer the question directly | 直接回答问题 Published by TutorHao | A-Level 哲学 Revision Series | aleveler.com
