📚 IGCSE Cambridge Art: Experimental and Practical Assessment Essentials | IGCSE
Cambridge IGCSE Art & Design (0400) is a practical, portfolio-based subject. There is no written paper, so every mark is earned through visual investigation, experimentation, development and final outcomes. This guide explains the key assessment requirements and how to present strong evidence across all four Assessment Objectives.
1. Understanding the Cambridge IGCSE Art & Design Assessment Structure | 理解剑桥 IGCSE 艺术与设计考核结构
Cambridge IGCSE Art & Design (0400) is assessed through two practical components: Component 1 Coursework and Component 2 Externally Set Assignment. Each component is worth 50% of the final grade. There is no written examination, so the quality of your practical portfolio is decisive.
|---|---|---|
| Component 1: Coursework | 第一部分:课程作业 | 50% | Centre-set portfolio of practical work | 学校设定的实践作品集 |
Each component is marked against four equally weighted Assessment Objectives: AO1 Record, AO2 Explore, AO3 Develop and AO4 Present. Each AO is worth 25 marks, giving a total of 100 marks per component.
You must therefore treat every page, test and final piece as evidence for one or more Assessment Objectives. A balanced portfolio is much stronger than one that focuses only on finished outcomes.
2. Assessment Objective 1: Recording Ideas and Observations |
AO1 rewards your ability to record ideas, observations and insights relevant to your intentions. In practice, this means producing first-hand drawings, photographs, colour studies, tonal studies and written notes rather than relying only on downloaded images.
Examiners look for direct observation from real objects, people, landscapes, interiors and natural forms. Draw from life wherever possible, and use your own photographs only as a secondary support.
A strong AO1 evidence base includes line drawings, contour studies, negative space studies, texture rubbings, tonal value charts and compositional sketches. Date each entry and briefly note why you made it.
- Draw from primary sources before turning to photographs or secondary images.
- Use varied recording media such as graphite, charcoal, ink, pastel, watercolour and digital sketching.
- Show selection and editing by printing contact sheets and marking the strongest images.
Remember that AO1 is not about making perfect drawings. It is about showing how you see, select and record visual information that will feed later ideas.
3. Assessment Objective 2: Exploring Media, Materials and Techniques |
AO2 assesses how well you explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes. This is the heart of the experimental assessment: you must show trials, samples and technical tests before committing to a final approach.
A high-scoring portfolio explores a range of media in depth. Dry media may include graphite, charcoal, chalk, oil pastel and coloured pencil. Wet media may include watercolour, gouache, acrylic and ink. You might also test printmaking, collage, digital manipulation, textile processes or 3D construction where relevant.
It is better to explore fewer media in depth than to make superficial marks with many. For each medium, show at least two or three variations: different application methods, different surfaces, different drying times or different layering orders.
- Monoprint over watercolour wash: test registration, pressure and ink consistency.
- Acrylic on textured ground: compare gesso, modelling paste and fabric.
- Digital layering: scan drawings, adjust opacity, combine with photographs.
Document failed experiments as well as successful ones. Write one sentence explaining what you learned from each test. This turns a simple material sample into critical evidence.
4. Assessment Objective 3: Developing Ideas Through Investigation |
AO3 marks the way you develop ideas through investigation, showing critical understanding of sources and contexts. This means moving from initial recordings to more personal, refined outcomes through a visible chain of decisions.
Include artist studies, gallery visits, cultural references and material experiments. Do not simply copy an artist; analyse their use of line, colour, composition and technique, then apply what you have learned to your own work.
Development pages should show alternatives: thumbnail sketches, changed colour schemes, cropping tests, different backgrounds and media switches. Annotate why you selected one option over another.
For example, if your theme is ‘identity’, you might first record self-portrait photographs, then study the distortion techniques of Francis Bacon, then experiment with painting over torn prints, then test a final composition with fragmented mirror imagery.
Every stage should connect to the next. The examiner should be able to see why your final piece looks the way it does without reading long paragraphs.
5. Assessment Objective 4: Presenting a Personal and Coherent Final Outcome |
AO4 evaluates the final piece or pieces that realise your intentions and demonstrate understanding of visual language. The outcome must not appear suddenly; it should grow logically from the experiments and studies in your workbook.
Final outcomes may be 2D, 3D, digital or lens-based. The examiner checks whether the final piece shows technical control, personal expression and a clear link to the preparatory work.
