📚 IGCSE Cambridge Media Studies Formula & Theory Quick Reference | IGCSE Cambridge

In IGCSE Cambridge Media Studies, you do not learn equations like F = ma, but you do need analytical formulas that can be repeated across texts: media language, representation, audience and institution. This quick reference collects the models, theories and terminology most useful for Papers 1 and 2, from semiotics and narrative to camera work and exam structure.

1. Media Text Analysis Formula |

Media text = Media language × Representation × Audience × Institution

This formula is the core of Cambridge Media Studies. Every media text can be analysed by asking how it uses codes, what it represents, who it addresses and which organisation produced it.

  • Media language: codes and conventions such as camera, sound, editing, mise-en-scène. |
  • Representation: how people, places and ideas are constructed. |
  • Audience: target group and how the text appeals to them.
  • Institution: producer, ownership, funding and regulation. |

In exam answers, apply the formula in any order, but try to link the four areas rather than treating them as separate boxes. For example, a TV drama’s low-key lighting is a media language choice that constructs a fearful representation and positions the audience to feel suspense for a commercial broadcaster.

2. Semiotics: Signifier and Signified |

Sign = Signifier + Signified

A sign is made of a physical form, the signifier, and the mental concept it creates, the signified. For example, a gold medal is a signifier: metal on a ribbon, and its signified could be victory, achievement or national pride.

Roland Barthes adds a second layer: denotation is the literal meaning, while connotation is the cultural association. Producers often anchor preferred meanings through captions, music or editing to limit alternative readings.

Sign Signifier Signified Connotation
Red rose red flower romance or politics love, passion, labour movement
Crown ornamental headpiece monarchy or authority power, tradition, inequality

In Media Studies, identifying signs is not enough: you must explain how signifier and signified work together to create ideology or myth.

3. Narrative Theory: Todorov’s Equilibrium Formula |

Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Attempt to repair → New equilibrium

Todorov argues that narratives begin in a stable world, which is disrupted, then recognised, repaired, and finally closed by a new equilibrium that is never identical to the first.

  • Equilibrium: everyday life is normal and balanced. |
  • Disruption: an event changes the situation. |
  • Recognition: characters realise the disruption. |
  • Attempt to repair: characters act to solve the problem. |
  • New equilibrium: a different stability is reached. |

This model works well for film trailers, news stories and advertisements, where disruption is often introduced early to capture attention. In an exam, you can map a text’s plot onto the formula to prove it follows or challenges conventional narrative structure.

4. Character Functions: Propp’s Seven Spheres |

Character = Function (not personality)

Vladimir Propp studied folk tales and found that characters exist to perform narrative functions, not simply to show personality. Cambridge candidates often apply these seven spheres to film, advertising and news narratives.

  • Villain: opposes the hero. |
  • Donor: gives the hero a magical object or knowledge. |
  • Helper: supports the hero. |
  • Princess: sought by the hero; often the reward. |
  • Dispatcher: sends the hero on the quest. |
  • Hero: restores equilibrium and wins the reward. |
  • False hero: appears good but is ultimately exposed. |

Modern media often combine functions: a protagonist may be hero and dispatcher, or a brand may act as donor in an advertisement. Use the formula to discuss how roles are assigned and what values this promotes.

5. Binary Oppositions: Lévi-Strauss |

Meaning = Opposition A vs Opposition B

Claude Lévi-Strauss argues that narratives are structured through pairs of opposites. Conflict between opposites drives interest and encodes ideology, because one side is usually privileged as normal or good.

  • Good vs evil |
  • Past vs future |
  • Nature vs technology |
  • Urban vs rural |
  • East vs West |

In an exam, identify a binary opposition, then explain which side is preferred and how the text encourages that preference. For example, a crime drama may oppose police as order and criminals as chaos, reinforcing the message that law enforcement protects society.

6. Representation Formula |

Representation = Selection + Construction + Mediation

Media does not mirror reality; it selects elements, constructs a version and mediates it through codes. This process shapes audience beliefs about social groups, places and issues.

Stereotype = Simplified trait × Repetition × Social power

A stereotype reduces a group to a few exaggerated traits, repeats them across texts and often reinforces the power of dominant groups. Studying stereotypes means asking whose interests they serve.

Encoding → Preferred reading / Negotiated reading / Oppositional reading

Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding model says producers encode meanings and audiences can decode them in three ways: accept the preferred meaning, partially accept it, or reject it from an alternative perspective.

7. Audience Theories: Uses and Gratifications |

Media use = Diversion + Personal relationships + Personal identity + Surveillance

Blumler and Katz argue that audiences actively select media to satisfy needs. This opposes the hypodermic needle idea that media simply injects messages into passive viewers.

Need Explanation Example
Diversion escape from routine or problems watching sitcoms to relax
Personal relationships companionship with media figures or social chat following influencers
Personal identity comparing self with values and lifestyles reading teen magazines
Surveillance gathering information about the world checking news apps

In answers, avoid saying ‘everyone uses media for escape’. Instead, use the formula to weigh up different possible gratifications for different audiences.

8. Media Language: Technical Codes |

Technical code = Camera + Sound + Editing + Mise-en-scène

Technical codes are the building blocks of media language. You must use precise terminology in exam answers to show analysis rather than description.

Code Elements Code | 要素
Camera shot size, angle, movement
Sound diegetic, non-diegetic, dialogue, music, effects
Editing cutting, pace, transitions, continuity
