IGCSE Cambridge Music: Practical Assessment Essentials | IGCSE Cambridge

📚 IGCSE Cambridge Music: Practical Assessment Essentials | IGCSE Cambridge

Cambridge IGCSE Music does not have a laboratory experiment. Its practical assessment is built around two coursework components: Performing and Composing. Together they usually account for 60% of the total marks, so practical skills are central to the final grade.

The practical work is marked internally by your teacher and then moderated externally by Cambridge. That means your evidence must be clear, authentic and well organised, not just musically strong.

1. Understanding the Practical Components |

In most Cambridge IGCSE Music entries, the practical assessment consists of Component 2 Performing and Component 3 Composing. Component 1 Listening is a written paper and usually carries 40%, while Performing and Composing each carry about 30%.

Component Typical Weight Key Requirement
Listening 40% Written examination
Performing 30% Two recordings: solo and ensemble
Composing 30% Two compositions with scores or recordings

Always check your current syllabus code and year, because precise weightings and rules can change. Your teacher will confirm the administrative details, but your job is to meet the musical standards consistently.

2. Component 2 Performing: Solo and Ensemble |

For Performing, candidates usually submit two pieces: one solo performance and one ensemble performance. The combined total is often around four to six minutes, but you must confirm the current syllabus minimum and maximum durations.

A solo piece is performed with accompaniment where the accompaniment is not counted as another part of the assessment, while the ensemble piece must show genuine interaction with at least one other live musician.

Each piece should be complete, musical and recorded in a continuous take. Single movements or extracts are sometimes acceptable, but a complete short piece usually gives a better impression.

3. Choosing Repertoire Wisely |

Repertoire selection is one of the most important practical decisions. Choose pieces that show your strengths, allow expressive control and stay within your technical comfort zone.

Do not choose a piece solely because it is impressive. If the tempo, leaps, articulation or breathing demands are too difficult, accuracy and flow will collapse under recording pressure.

For ensemble work, pick music that allows you to listen and respond, not just a piece where everyone plays the same rhythm in unison. Real ensemble texture will expose balance and cueing skills.

4. Technical Control and Accuracy |

Examiners mark accuracy of pitch, rhythm, articulation, tempo and intonation. Technical control means the notes are secure, even at faster passages, and that repeated patterns remain consistent.

Practise slowly with a metronome before pushing tempo. Isolate problem bars, record yourself and compare with the score, and make sure accidentals and key signatures are always respected.

For singers, diction, breath control and vowel placement are technical features. For instrumentalists, tone production body posture and hand position matter as much as the notes themselves.

  • Use a practice log to track tempo markings.
  • Record a weekly run-through to identify recurring errors.
  • Warm up with scales, arpeggios or vocalises before each take.

5. Interpretation and Musicality |

Technical accuracy alone is not enough. The performance must show a sense of style, phrasing and character. Dynamics, articulation and tempo variation should be deliberate, not accidental.

Study the historical or stylistic context of your piece. A Baroque movement and a Romantic character piece require different articulation, vibrato and dynamic shaping.

Think about the direction of each phrase. Mark climax points, breathing spaces and cadences, then practise bringing those moments out without exaggerating every bar.

6. Ensemble Skills and Listening |

In the ensemble piece, the examiner wants to hear balance, blend, timing and responsiveness. You must be able to adjust your volume and tuning to match other performers.

Make eye contact, agree on breathing or cue gestures, and practise starting and ending together. A messy opening or final chord can lower the overall impression significantly.

Do not overpower the ensemble. If you are the melody, project clearly; if you are accompaniment, support the texture without covering the lead line.

7. Recording and Evidence Requirements |

Recordings must be clear, free from excessive background noise and large enough to identify every performer. Use a good external microphone if possible, and place it to capture a balanced sound.

Each piece is normally recorded in one continuous take without internal editing. Do not cut out mistakes or splice sections together, as this can be treated as malpractice.

If video evidence is required by your centre, make sure the camera is stable, well lit and shows your face, hands and instrument clearly. Introduce the piece on camera if your centre asks for it.

Label your files correctly with your candidate number, component and piece title. Keep backup copies and never compress audio so much that the tone becomes distorted.

8. Component 3 Composing: Two Contrasting Pieces |

For Composing, candidates usually submit two compositions: one written in a Western tonal tradition and one free composition. The combined duration is often around three to five minutes, but confirm the exact requirement.

Each composition should feel like a complete piece, not a collection of unrelated ideas. A clear structure such as binary, ternary, theme and variations, or verse-chorus form helps the listener follow your intention.

Show control of melody, harmony, rhythm, texture and instrumentation. Even a short piece can be high-quality if the material is developed with purpose.

  • Start with a clear motif or chord progression.
  • Develop it through sequence, inversion, augmentation or contrast.
  • Create a beginning, middle and end with a sense of arrival.

9. Score, Annotation and Originality |

You normally need to submit a notated score and a recording or digital realisation of each composition. The score should be accurate, playable and clearly laid out with dynamics, articulation and tempo.

Handwritten scores must be neat; notation software such as MuseScore, Sibelius or Dorico is strongly recommended because it reduces ambiguity and speeds up correction.

A short written statement or annotation may be required. Explain your musical intentions, the structure you used and how harmony, melody and texture support the title or brief.

Originality is essential. You may use notation software and MIDI playback, but the musical ideas must be your own. Avoid copying long passages from existing works or using unedited sample loops.

10. Assessment Criteria and Common Pitfalls |

Performing is usually assessed on accuracy, technical control, interpretation and communication. Composing is assessed on imagination, development, structure, use of medium and accuracy of notation.

Common pitfalls include choosing over-ambitious repertoire, submitting recordings with poor balance, having no clear structure in a composition, missing deadlines and forgetting to check file formats.

Before submission, make a final checklist: correct candidate details, complete recordings, backup files, accurate scores, signed authentication forms and a final listen to every track.

If you prepare steadily, record early and seek feedback from your teacher, the practical components become a reliable way to demonstrate your real musicianship rather than a last-minute risk.
