📚 IGCSE Cambridge Philosophy: Summer Preview and Bridging Course | IGCSE
Welcome to the IGCSE Philosophy summer bridging course. Although Cambridge IGCSE does not offer a standalone Philosophy syllabus, many international schools include philosophy as an enrichment subject. The skills introduced here support Cambridge IGCSE Global Perspectives, English Literature and Religious Studies, and they build a strong foundation for Cambridge International AS & A Level Philosophy (9694).
This article is designed for self-study during the summer. You will learn how philosophers think, how to construct and evaluate arguments, and how to write clear analytical essays. Each section pairs an English explanation with a Chinese summary to support bilingual learners.
1. What Is Philosophy? |
Philosophy comes from the Greek word ‘philosophia’, meaning love of wisdom. It is not simply giving opinions; it asks fundamental questions about knowledge, reality, morality and meaning, and it demands reasons for every answer.
The main branches include epistemology, ethics, metaphysics, logic and aesthetics. In a Cambridge-style course, you will move between these branches rather than memorising a single body of facts.
- Epistemology: How do we know?
- Ethics: What is right and wrong?
- Metaphysics: What is real?
- Logic: What makes a good argument?
- Aesthetics: What is beauty?
2. Logic and Argument |
An argument in philosophy is a set of statements where one statement, the conclusion, is supported by others called premises. A valid argument has a form in which if the premises are true, the conclusion must be true. Soundness adds the requirement that the premises are actually true.
For example, the rule of modus ponens says: if P implies Q, and P is true, then Q follows. This structure is used constantly in essays and comprehension tasks.
P → Q; P; ∴ Q
Common fallacies include ad hominem and straw man. Learning to spot these improves both reading and writing.
- Ad hominem: attacking the speaker rather than the claim.
- Straw man: distorting a view to make it easier to attack.
- False dilemma: presenting only two options when more exist.
3. Epistemology: How Do We Know?
Epistemology examines the nature, sources and limits of knowledge. Two classic schools are rationalism, which says reason is the main source of knowledge, and empiricism, which says experience and the senses are primary.
Plato’s allegory of the cave suggests that most people mistake shadows for reality, and that philosophical reasoning can lead us from mere opinion to true understanding. Descartes, by contrast, used radical doubt to search for a foundation of certainty, arriving at ‘I think, therefore I am’.
At IGCSE level, you do not need to choose a school; you need to explain how a rationalist and an empiricist would answer the same question, such as ‘How do we know 2 + 2 = 4?’
4. Ethics: Right and Wrong |
Normative ethics asks what makes an action right or wrong. Consequentialism judges actions by their outcomes; deontology judges actions by duties and rules; virtue ethics focuses on the character of the moral agent.
The famous trolley problem illustrates the tension: is it permissible to divert a runaway trolley to kill one person instead of five? A utilitarian may say yes, because it maximises welfare; a deontologist may say no, because intentionally using a person as a means violates a moral rule.
For Cambridge-style assessment, practise giving both sides of an ethical issue before stating your own judgement. Use terms such as ‘rights’, ‘duty’, ‘consequences’ and ‘virtue’ accurately.
5. Metaphysics: What Is Real? |
Metaphysics investigates the most general features of reality, including time, space, causation, identity and free will. A key debate is whether humans have free will or whether all events are determined by prior causes.
Another question concerns universals: when we say ‘justice’ or ‘red’, do these general properties exist independently of particular just acts or red objects? You do not need to resolve the debate, but you should be able to state what is at stake.
In essays, avoid vague language such as ‘everything is relative’. Instead, define your terms and give a concrete example, such as whether a tree falling in an empty forest makes a sound.
6. Philosophy of Mind |
Philosophy of mind examines the relationship between the mental and the physical. Dualism claims the mind and body are distinct substances; physicalism claims mental states are ultimately physical states of the brain.
Thought experiments such as Mary the colour scientist ask whether a person who knows all physical facts about colour would learn something new on seeing red for the first time. If she does, some argue, physicalism is incomplete.
When writing about this topic, separate the descriptive question ‘What is the mind?’ from the normative question ‘What should we do with conscious beings?’ Both are philosophical but require different kinds of argument.
7. Political Philosophy |
Political philosophy asks why we have government, what makes authority legitimate, and what justice requires. Social contract theorists such as Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau imagine a state of nature to explain why individuals would agree to obey rules.
A central tension is between liberty and equality. Some theories prioritise individual rights even if this leads to unequal outcomes; others support redistribution even if it restricts some economic freedom.
For exam practice, compare two thinkers on a specific issue, such as ‘Should we ever disobey an unjust law?’ Give reasons from each position before concluding.
8. Aesthetics | 美学
Aesthetics asks what makes something beautiful, whether aesthetic judgements are objective or subjective, and what art is. Hume argued that taste is subjective but can be educated; Kant argued that aesthetic judgements claim universal validity while remaining based on feeling.
Use examples from visual art, music and literature to test definitions. A definition of art that includes all paintings but excludes conceptual art may need revision.
In a Cambridge-style short answer, you could be asked to explain why an artwork might be valuable even if it is not beautiful. This links aesthetics to ethics and knowledge.
