📚 IGCSE Cambridge Philosophy: Time Planning and Exam Strategies | IGCSE

Preparing for IGCSE-level philosophy is less about memorising dates and quotations and more about practising clear argument, analysis and evaluation under timed conditions. This guide sets out a realistic revision timeline and the strategies that produce higher marks in philosophy-style questions, whether you are taking a school-based philosophy elective, the philosophy and ethics strand of Cambridge IGCSE Religious Studies, or preparing for advanced philosophy study.

1. Understand the Syllabus and Assessment Objectives |

Before you build a timetable, confirm which philosophy-related specification you are actually revising. Cambridge does not currently offer a standalone IGCSE Philosophy syllabus; most learners encounter philosophy through the philosophy and ethics strand of Cambridge IGCSE Religious Studies (0490), a school-devised philosophy elective, or Global Perspectives. Whatever the route, the mark scheme rewards two broad clusters: knowledge and understanding of arguments, and analysis plus evaluation.

Write out the exact topics you must cover, such as the existence of God, the problem of evil, moral absolutism and relativism, free will, or identity. For each topic, note whether the paper usually asks you to describe a position, compare two views, or evaluate strengths and weaknesses. This list becomes your revision map.

2. Build a 12-Week Revision Timeline |

A 12-week timeline works well because it gives enough time to relearn, apply and simulate. Divide the period into three phases: foundation, application and exam simulation. Aim for two or three philosophy revision sessions per week, each lasting 45 to 60 minutes, rather than one long block that fades after an hour.

1-4 Topic maps, key terms, core arguments One-page summary per topic
5-8 Past paper questions, paragraph plans Timed paragraphs and mini-essays
9-12 Full papers, marking, error log Three or four full timed papers

In the foundation phase, do not attempt full exam questions. Instead, create condensed notes that explain each argument in your own words. In the application phase, answer short questions and single paragraphs under timed conditions. In the simulation phase, complete whole papers, mark them against the mark scheme, and record every mistake in an error log.

3. Master Core Philosophical Skills |

Philosophy assessment rewards skills more than recall. Practise separating description from argument: a description says what a thinker claims, while an argument gives reasons for or against that claim. In your notes, write any argument as a sequence of premises leading to a conclusion, and check whether the conclusion actually follows.

Use counterexamples to test general claims. If a moral theory says lying is always wrong, ask whether lying to protect an innocent person is wrong. Use the principle of charity: before attacking an argument, restate the strongest version of it. Avoid informal fallacies such as straw man, circular reasoning and ad hominem in your own writing.

Evaluation means judging how far an argument succeeds, not merely repeating its main idea. Use evaluative phrases such as “this is convincing only if”, “the argument depends on”, “a key weakness is” and “a possible reply is”. Award yourself one mark for each clear link from reason to evaluation.

4. Use Active Recall and Spaced Repetition |

Passive rereading feels productive but produces weak memory traces. Replace it with active recall: turn each topic into a question card such as “What is the difference between act and rule utilitarianism?” or “Explain the problem of evil as a logical challenge”. Try to answer out loud or in writing before checking your notes.

Review each question card at increasing intervals: the next day, three days later, then seven days later. This spaced repetition strengthens long-term memory. For ideas you find hard to explain, use the Feynman technique: teach the concept in simple language as if to a younger student, then identify the gaps and relearn those parts.

Every week, reserve one session for mixed-topic recall rather than studying a single topic. Mixed practice forces your brain to retrieve the right idea from several options, which mirrors the exam and improves transfer.

5. Past Papers and Mark Schemes |

From week five onwards, make past papers your central tool. Begin by reading the question, writing a plan, then comparing your plan with the mark scheme. Do not mark your own essay mainly on whether you agree with the sample answer; mark it on whether you hit the assessment objectives: clear knowledge, developed reasons and a balanced evaluation.

Identify the command words in each question. “Describe” requires accurate explanation, “Discuss” requires arguments for and against, and “Evaluate” or “To what extent” requires a judgement about which side is stronger. Underline the command word and any limiting phrases such as “in this life” or “for a religious believer”.

Use the mark scheme in reverse: read a top-level sample answer, then list what the examiner credited. You will often find that high-scoring answers name a view, explain at least two reasons, consider one objection and state a justified conclusion. Turn these features into a checklist for every practice essay.

6. Plan Essay Structures before the Exam |

A philosophy essay needs visible structure, not free association. Use a simple skeleton: introduction stating your judgement, two or three supporting arguments, one objection with a response, and a conclusion that follows from the strongest reason. Each paragraph should begin with one clear topic sentence.

For each paragraph, remember PEEL: Point, Evidence or Example, Explanation, Link back to the question. In philosophy, evidence is often a reason or a thought experiment rather than a quotation. The link sentence should return to the essay question, for example “This shows that the argument from evil is stronger for moral evil than for natural evil.”

Practise five-minute essay plans. For a 12-mark question, write the judgement, three bullet arguments, one objection and a conclusion before you begin the full response. This prevents rambling introductions and missing the question.

7. Time Management in the Exam |

Allocate time by mark weight. For a paper with 60 marks in 90 minutes, one mark is worth about 1.5 minutes. A 10-mark question therefore deserves around 15 minutes. Write the start and finish times next to each question before you answer the first one.

Spend the first two minutes reading the whole paper and marking the questions you will attempt. If there is choice, select questions by your strongest topics, not by how easy the question looks. Then plan each essay for three to five minutes before writing the full answer.

Reserve the final two minutes for checking. In philosophy, the most valuable check is not spelling but whether you have actually answered the command word and maintained a line of argument. If an answer lacks a clear judgement, add one sentence in the conclusion or margin.

8. Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them | 常见错误与避免方法

One common pitfall is narrating a thinker’s view without analysing it. Do not write “Kant says lying is wrong” and stop. Add the reason, the implication and a criticism: “Kant argues that lying cannot be universalised because trust would collapse; however, critics object that he ignores conflicts between duties.”

Another pitfall is presenting only one side of a debate. For any “Discuss” or “Evaluate” question, you need at least one developed counterargument. If you cannot think of a real objection, ask what a reasonable opponent would say, or what the weakest premise of your argument is.

Vague language lowers marks in philosophy. Replace “people think it is good” with “act utilitarians think an action is right if it maximises overall happiness”. Use technical terms precisely, such as “valid”, “sound”, “a priori” and “relativism”, only if you can define them.

Finally, avoid writing an unfocused conclusion. A conclusion should state why one side is stronger, justified by the best reason from your essay. It should not introduce a brand new argument or simply repeat the introduction.

9. Wellbeing and Exam-Day Routine |

Your revision schedule will only work if it is sustainable. Sleep for at least eight hours per night, especially in the final two weeks, because sleep consolidates the reasoning patterns you need in philosophy. Take a full day off each week to let your brain process arguments without new input.

On the day before the exam, do not attempt a full paper. Review your one-page topic summaries and your error log. Prepare your equipment, check the exam time and route, and pack water. On exam morning, eat a slow-release breakfast and arrive early enough to avoid panic.

In the exam room, if you feel overwhelmed, pause for ten seconds, breathe slowly and read the command word again. When your mind goes blank, write the question in your own words and list one argument you do remember; this often unlocks the rest.

10. Summary: A Sustainable Revision Rhythm |

The strongest IGCSE philosophy candidates are not those who revise longest, but those who revise with the assessment objectives constantly in view. Build topic maps, practise active recall, write timed paragraphs and mark them using the mark scheme. Keep an error log so every practice session changes what you do next week.

Your weekly rhythm should be simple: learn by summarising, remember by testing, apply by planning essays, and improve by marking. By the final three weeks, you should be producing full answers under timed conditions without additional notes. Trust the process, adjust the plan, and you will enter the exam with both knowledge and control.
