📚 IGCSE Cambridge Politics: Exam Techniques and Mark Schemes | IGCSE

In Cambridge IGCSE Politics, success is not only about remembering facts; it is about showing examiners exactly how you think. This guide explains the assessment objectives, mark scheme logic, and practical techniques for structuring answers that hit the top bands.

1. Understanding the Assessment Objectives |

Cambridge IGCSE Politics papers are designed around three broad assessment objectives: knowledge and understanding, application and interpretation, and analysis and evaluation. You must show all three in almost every long answer.

Knowledge and understanding means accurately defining concepts such as democracy, sovereignty, separation of powers, or proportional representation. Application means using those concepts to make sense of a source, case study, or data set.

Analysis and evaluation is the most heavily weighted skill at the top of the mark scheme. You must break arguments into parts, compare perspectives, and judge which is stronger based on evidence.

Assessment Objective What it tests Typical weighting
AO1 Knowledge and understanding 30-35%
AO2 Application and interpretation 30-35%
AO3 Analysis and evaluation 30-40%

2. How Cambridge Mark Schemes Work | 剑桥评分标准如何运作

Cambridge mark schemes for politics often use levels-based marking for extended responses. Your answer is placed in a band according to the quality of argument, use of evidence, and structure, not just the number of correct points.

For example, a low-band answer might list several accurate facts but fail to answer the question. A high-band answer will select fewer details, connect them to the command word, and reach a justified conclusion.

Examiners use the “best fit” principle: they match the whole response to the band descriptor that best describes its overall quality. This means one weak paragraph will not destroy a strong essay, but a missing conclusion can lower the band.

3. Command Words: What Examiners Want |

Every question contains a command word that tells you the required cognitive skill. Misreading “explain” as “describe” is one of the most common reasons candidates lose marks.

  • Define: give a precise meaning, usually one or two sentences.
  • Describe: state the main features without explaining causes.
  • Explain: give reasons, causes, or mechanisms.
  • Analyse: break a topic into parts and show how they relate.
  • Evaluate: weigh strengths and weaknesses and make a judgement.
  • To what extent: consider both sides and reach a balanced conclusion.

When you see “evaluate”, the examiner expects you to use criteria such as feasibility, fairness, effectiveness, or democracy. Simply saying “this is good” without a criterion will not reach the top band.

4. Building a Balanced Argument |

A top-band politics answer rarely supports only one side. Instead, it presents competing arguments, weighs them, and then reaches a clear judgement. This shows the examiner you can think critically.

For example, in a question on whether referendums improve democracy, you might argue that they increase public participation and legitimacy, but also that they can oversimplify complex issues and strengthen executive control.

The judgement should answer the question directly: “Referendums improve democracy only when they are combined with strong representative institutions and clear rules on campaign finance.” This is stronger than “it depends”.

5. Using Evidence and Examples |

Evidence in IGCSE Politics can come from your own knowledge of political systems, current affairs, historical cases, or the source provided. The mark scheme rewards precise and relevant examples over vague references.
