📚 IGCSE CCEA Accounting: A Parent’s Tutoring Guide | IGCSE CCEA

Many parents want to help their child succeed in CCEA Accounting but are unsure where to start. This guide explains the syllabus essentials and gives practical, low-stress ways to support revision at home.

1. Understanding the CCEA Accounting Course | 了解 CCEA 会计课程

CCEA Accounting introduces students to the language of business and the recording, reporting and interpretation of financial information. The course usually combines core bookkeeping with final accounts and analysis.

The qualification is assessed mainly through written examinations that test both numerical accuracy and the ability to explain accounting concepts clearly.

2. The Accounting Equation and Double-Entry |

Double-entry bookkeeping is the foundation of CCEA Accounting. Every transaction affects two accounts: one account is debited and another account is credited with an equal amount.

Parents can help by asking the child to explain how to classify accounts as assets, liabilities, capital, income or expenses. This classification determines whether an increase is recorded on the debit or credit side.

Assets = Liabilities + Capital

This accounting equation must stay balanced after every transaction, and it is a useful quick check when a ledger entry looks wrong.

3. Source Documents and Books of Prime Entry |

Before amounts reach the ledgers, transactions are recorded in books of prime entry such as the sales day book, purchases day book, cash book and journal.

Each book of prime entry is supported by source documents such as invoices, credit notes, receipts and cheque counterfoils. Being able to match documents to books is a common exam skill.

4. Ledger Accounts and the Trial Balance |

Ledger accounts summarise the entries from the books of prime entry in T-account format. Students must know how to post transactions, balance accounts and bring down opening balances.

A trial balance lists all ledger balances in debit and credit columns. If the totals are unequal, students should check arithmetic, posting and omission errors.

Some errors, such as complete omission or compensating errors, do not affect the trial balance totals, so students must look beyond the trial balance when locating mistakes.

5. Control Accounts and Bank Reconciliation |

Control accounts provide a summary of the sales ledger and purchases ledger. They act as independent checks against individual customer and supplier accounts.

A bank reconciliation statement explains the difference between the cash book balance and the bank statement balance, using items such as unpresented cheques and bank charges.

6. Year-End Adjustments |

Year-end adjustments such as accruals, prepayments, depreciation and irrecoverable debts ensure that income and expenses are matched to the correct period.

For example, an unpaid electricity bill must be added to expenses even if the cash has not yet been paid. This is the accruals concept.

Depreciation per year = (Cost − Residual value) ÷ Useful life

Straight-line depreciation is a frequent calculation, and parents can ask learners to explain the effect on profit and asset values.

7. Preparing Financial Statements |

CCEA Accounting requires students to prepare an income statement and a statement of financial position for sole traders, and often for other organisations such as clubs.

The income statement shows profit or loss by matching revenue with expenses, while the statement of financial position shows assets, liabilities and capital at a point in time.

Parents can support by checking that the child labels each statement correctly and uses the accounting equation to confirm that the statement of financial position balances.

8. Ratio Analysis and Interpretation |

Ratios help users compare performance over time and against other businesses. Common profitability ratios include gross profit margin and net profit margin.

Liquidity ratios, such as the current ratio, show whether a business can meet its short-term obligations. A very high current ratio may suggest inefficient use of assets.

Ratio | 比率 Formula | 公式 What it shows | 作用
Gross profit margin | 毛利率 Gross profit ÷ Revenue × 100 Profit from buying and selling | 买卖活动的利润
Current ratio |
