📚 IGCSE CCEA History: Essay Writing Frameworks and Model Answers | IGCSE CCEA

In CCEA History, writing a good essay is not about telling a long story. It is about showing the examiner that you can select relevant knowledge, explain causes and consequences, and make a clear judgement. This article gives you a practical writing framework and a model answer to help you move from description to analysis.

CCEA History essays are marked less on storytelling and more on how you select, explain and evaluate evidence. Most questions combine three assessment objectives: recalling and selecting knowledge (AO1), explaining and analysing causes, consequences and change (AO2), and using sources and interpretations (AO3). A high-scoring answer must therefore balance accurate knowledge with explanation and judgement.

Examiners often use marking bands that reward a clear structure, a sustained argument and precise supporting evidence. If you only narrate events, you will stay in the lower bands even if your facts are correct.

2. Command Words and Question Types |

Before planning your essay, identify the command word. Words such as ‘describe’, ‘explain’, ‘compare’, ‘assess’ and ‘how far do you agree’ require different structures. Misreading the command word is one of the most common reasons for losing marks.

describe、explain、compare、assess 和 how far do you agree 等词语要求完全不同的结构。

Command word What it asks
Describe Give features or sequence
Explain Give reasons and links
Compare Show similarities and differences
Assess Weigh importance or success
How far do you agree Argue both sides and judge

3. The Four-Part Essay Structure |

A safe default for most CCEA essays is a four-part structure: a short introduction, two or three analytical body paragraphs, a counter-argument or balance paragraph, and a conclusion. This structure keeps your answer focused on the question rather than on chronological storytelling.

Each body paragraph should open with a clear point, then support it with precise evidence, then explain why that evidence matters to the question. The final sentence should link back to the essay title.

4. Writing a Strong Introduction |

An introduction should be short, usually three or four sentences. It can define the scope, suggest criteria for judgement, and state your line of argument. Avoid vague phrases such as ‘History is full of causes’ or ‘This essay will look at…’.

Example: ‘The Treaty of Versailles created both immediate resentment and longer-term instability. However, its unfairness is best judged by comparing its terms with German expectations and with other peace settlements of 1919-23. Overall, the treaty was politically unfair, though its territorial terms were less extreme than Germans claimed.’

PEEAL stands for Point, Evidence, Explanation, Analysis and Link. It is more useful than PEE because it pushes you to develop the ‘so what’ factor, which examiners reward most.

For example: Point: The reparations clause was economically destabilising. Evidence: Germany was required to pay 132 billion gold marks. Explanation: This burden undermined the Weimar government’s finances. Analysis: More importantly, it allowed nationalist politicians to attack the Republic as weak and unpatriotic. Link: Therefore, the treaty was politically unfair even where the economic damage was partly self-inflicted.

6. Using Sources and Own Knowledge |

Some CCEA questions ask you to use a source or an interpretation. Do not simply describe the source. Combine its message with your own knowledge to test reliability, usefulness or whether you agree with it.

Useful phrases include: ‘The source is useful for showing…’, ‘However, it is limited because…’, ‘My own knowledge suggests that…’, and ‘This interpretation is convincing only if we accept…’.

7. Change and Continuity Essays |

If the question asks about change, avoid describing one event after another. Identify the pace, direction and extent of change, and mention what stayed the same. That balance shows higher-level thinking.

For example, in a question on changes in medicine 1848-1948, you might argue that surgery changed most rapidly between 1846 and 1870 because anaesthetics and antiseptics addressed pain and infection, but public health improved more slowly due to cost and local opposition.

8. Causation Essays |

Causation questions often use words like ‘why’ or ‘main reason’. Strong answers rank causes, link them, and distinguish long-term, short-term and trigger causes. Do not just list causes in separate paragraphs.

Example ranking: ‘The October Revolution was caused by long-term discontent with autocracy, short-term war weariness, and the trigger of the Kornilov affair. The war was the most important because it turned discontent into a crisis of survival for the Provisional Government.’

9. Significance and Interpretation Essays |

Significance questions ask why an event or person matters. Use criteria such as how many people were affected, how long the impact lasted, and how deeply society changed. Then compare the event with others to justify your choice.

For interpretation questions, you may be given two views. Explain both, then argue which is more convincing using own knowledge. Do not sit on the fence; examiners expect a judgement.

10. Model Answer with Annotations |

Question: ‘The Treaty of Versailles was unfair to Germany.’ How far do you agree with this statement?

Model introduction: ‘The Treaty of Versailles was not uniformly unfair. Its territorial and military terms were harsh but partly understandable after a war of German aggression. The economic terms, especially reparations and the war guilt clause, were the most damaging because they undermined the new Weimar democracy. Overall, I agree that the treaty was politically unfair, but not in every detail.’

Body paragraph: ‘On one hand, the treaty was fair in imposing limits. Article 231 forced Germany to accept responsibility, but this was legal justification for reparations. France had suffered huge damage, so demanding security and payment was understandable. However, the scale of £6.6 billion created a sense of national humiliation and placed the new Republic under immediate economic pressure.’

Balance paragraph: ‘On the other hand, Germany had not been allowed to negotiate, and the terms broke the promise of a peace based on Wilson’s Fourteen Points. Self-determination was denied to many Germans in the Sudetenland and Poland. This made the treaty seem like a dictated peace, not a negotiated settlement, which weakened support for democracy in Germany.’

Conclusion: ‘Overall, I agree that the treaty was politically unfair to Germany, though its territorial terms were less extreme than Germans claimed. Its real unfairness lay in the combination of exclusion, humiliation and economic pressure, which destabilised the Republic and fed extremist propaganda. This made it a flawed peace, even if some individual clauses were defensible.’

11. Common Mistakes and Mark Scheme Tips |

Avoid writing everything you know about the topic. The examiner wants relevance and judgement, not a topic dump. Select only evidence that helps answer the exact question.

Also avoid unsupported assertions. Every claim should have a specific fact, date or name behind it. Use connecting words such as ‘therefore’, ‘more importantly’ and ‘however’ to show analysis.

使用 therefore、more importantly、however 等连接词来体现分析。

Check timing: in a 20-mark essay allow about 25 minutes: 4 minutes to plan, 18 minutes to write
