1. Understanding Cross-Curricular Demands in WJEC Media | 理解 WJEC 媒体中的跨学科要求

WJEC Media Studies is not a standalone subject: questions regularly ask you to combine close reading with social theory, business logic with audience data, or historical context with visual analysis. The examiner rewards answers that move beyond description and show awareness of how media products operate in wider society.

Cross-curricular thinking means treating a film poster as both a text and a commercial message, or treating a news homepage as both a political source and a design product. This integrated approach helps you answer ‘Explain’, ‘Analyse’ and ‘Evaluate’ questions with greater depth.

  • Media + English: language, tone, narrative, genre conventions
  • Media + Sociology: representation, stereotypes, ideology, dominant values
  • Media + Psychology: audience needs, emotional appeal, identification, cognitive shortcuts
  • Media + Business: ownership, revenue, regulation, marketing, distribution
  • Media + History: technological change, social attitudes, historical context
  • Media + Mathematics: ratings, market share, survey data, reach and frequency

2. Media Language Meets English Language Analysis |

Media language questions use the same analytical toolkit as English Language: denotation and connotation, figurative language, tone, mode of address and text-image relationships. When you analyse a print advert or magazine cover, you must identify how words and images work together to create meaning.

For example, a charity poster may use the word ‘fragile’ next to a child’s face. The denotation is a physical description; the connotation includes vulnerability, innocence and the need for protection. This lexical choice anchors the preferred reading of the image.

WJEC style questions often ask: ‘How does the combination of media language elements create meaning?’ You can structure your answer using the acronym CLIFT: Colour, Lighting, Image, Framing, Text. This keeps analysis precise and media-specific.

Does it create warmth, danger, professionalism or nostalgia?
Is it high-key, low-key or natural, and what mood does it set?
What objects or people are shown, and what do they signify?
How do camera angle, shot size and placement guide meaning?
What does the language, typography and slogan communicate?

3. Representation and Sociology: Reading Social Groups |

Representation questions ask how media products construct particular social groups, such as teenagers, women, ethnic minorities or the elderly. This is directly linked to sociological concepts like stereotype, ideology, hegemony and ‘the other’.

WJEC often expects you to discuss whether a representation is positive or negative, conventional or challenging. You should also consider whether stereotypes are reinforced or subverted, and what values this suggests about the producer and target audience.

For instance, a fitness campaign showing women as strong, active and sweaty challenges traditional passive beauty stereotypes. Sociologically, this can be read as an attempt to shift dominant gender norms, even if the campaign still operates within a commercial framework.

  • Dominant ideology: the common-sense values presented as natural, e.g. consumer success |
  • Stereotype: a simplified, repeated representation that reduces complex groups |
  • Countertype: a representation that challenges or reverses a traditional stereotype |

4. Audience Theory and Psychology: Emotional and Cognitive Appeals |

Audience questions require more than listing demographic categories. WJEC expects you to use psychological concepts such as emotional appeal, identification, social proof, fear, humour and nostalgia to explain how media products attract and hold attention.

Uses and Gratifications theory is a key framework: audiences may use media for entertainment, personal identity, social interaction, or information. When linked to psychology, you can explain why a video game clan system satisfies belonging needs, or why a news push alert satisfies the need for security and surveillance.

Reception theory also matters: an audience can take a preferred, negotiated or oppositional reading. This depends on personal experience, beliefs and social context. In an exam, show that you understand audiences are active, not passive.

For example, a horror film poster uses dark colours, a close-up of a terrified eye and the tagline ‘You will not sleep.’ Psychologically, this triggers the fear response and curiosity. Some audiences may seek the thrill of controlled fear; others may reject the genre entirely due to anxiety.

5. Industry, Ownership and Business Studies |

Media industry questions connect to Business Studies: ownership, concentration, vertical and horizontal integration, licensing, funding, regulation and distribution. You must be able to explain how these factors shape the content audiences receive.

WJEC case studies often include public service broadcasters, commercial broadcasters, independent producers and global conglomerates. Each ownership model has different priorities: public service emphasises citizenship and education; commercial media emphasises profit and market share.

Business concepts can make your answer more precise. For example, vertical integration allows a conglomerate to control production, distribution and exhibition, reducing costs and maximising synergy. Horizontal integration allows a company to expand within the same market to reduce competition.

  • Public service broadcaster: funded by licence fee or public money, aims to serve all citizens |
  • Commercial broadcaster: funded by advertising or subscription, aims to profit |
  • Independent producer: smaller company, may rely on funding, niche audiences or co-production |
  • Regulation: rules on accuracy, impartiality, harm and advertising |

6. Historical Context and Media Evolution |

Historical context questions ask how social attitudes, technology and events shaped media products. This draws on History skills: interpreting primary sources, considering change over time and avoiding presentism.

For example, a 1950s print advert may use language and imagery that seem sexist today, but at the time it reflected dominant gender roles. A strong answer identifies both the historical norms and how a modern audience might read the same advert differently.

Technological changes also transform media language and audience behaviour. The shift from analogue broadcasting to on-demand streaming changed scheduling, binge-watching and audience measurement. Newspapers moved from print-only to multi-platform publishing, altering news cycles and reader interaction.

7. Data Handling and Audience Research in Media |

WJEC tasks may include audience data: circulation figures, streaming counts, box office revenue, survey percentages or social media reach. You need to read tables, compare numbers and infer patterns, just as you would in Mathematics or Statistics.

When a question gives data, always identify the trend, the anomaly and the possible reason. For example, if a newspaper’s print circulation is falling but its online readership is rising, the business implication is a shift from print advertising to digital subscription revenue.

You can use simple calculations in analysis: percentage change, ratio, reach and average. For instance, a 25% increase in teen viewers for a streaming series suggests that the product successfully targeted a younger demographic through platform choice and social media marketing.

Percentage change = (New value − Old value) ÷ Old value × 100%

Always connect the numbers back to media concepts: audience, industry, distribution or representation. Do not simply repeat the data; interpret it.

8. Politics, Citizenship and News Media |

News media questions borrow from Citizenship and Politics: democracy, accountability, public opinion, bias, impartiality and the public sphere. WJEC expects you to understand that news has a civic role but also operates as a business.

Agenda-setting theory says news does not tell people what to think, but what to think about. Framing theory says the way a story is presented influences interpretation. Both connect media language to political communication.

When analysing a news homepage or front page, ask: Which stories are prioritised? Whose voices are quoted? What images are selected? What is omitted? These questions reveal editorial values and possible bias.

Regulation matters here. In the UK, broadcast news is required to be impartial, but newspapers are largely self-regulated and may openly support political parties. This distinction is a key WJEC industry point.

9. Creative Production Across Subject Boundaries |

WJEC production tasks require you to design media products for a specific brief, audience and platform. This is where technical skill meets English writing, Art and Design, IT and Business planning.

You might be asked to create a film poster, a magazine spread, a website homepage or a social media campaign. Your design decisions must be justified using media language, representation and audience theory.

Use a planning structure: Purpose, Audience, Platform, Representation, Language, Industry. This ensures your production is not just aesthetically pleasing but also technically and conceptually coherent.

  • Purpose: advertise, inform, entertain, persuade or campaign |
  • Audience: age, gender, interests, values, media habits |
  • Platform: print, broadcast, online, social media |
  • Representation: how people, places and issues are portrayed |
  • Language: colour, typography, image, sound, editing |
  • Industry: budget, distribution, regulation, revenue |

10. Exam-Style Integrated Question Practice |

Integrated questions often combine two or more disciplines. For example: ‘Explain how a media product reflects the social context in which it was produced.’ This requires media language, historical knowledge and sociological understanding.

Another common WJEC style is: ‘Discuss how audience data can be used by a media company to increase revenue.’ This links audience theory, business strategy and data handling. Address the question from at least two angles.

Use the PEEL structure for extended writing: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. In Media Studies, Evidence can be a specific element from a set product, a fact from industry data or a theoretical framework; Explanation applies the concept; Link returns to the question.

PEEL = Point → Evidence → Explanation → Link

PEEL = 观点 → 证据 → 解释 → 回扣

Try this practice question: ‘Explain why a film studio might use vertical integration to promote a new blockbuster. Use media industry and business concepts in your answer.’

11. Mark Scheme Thinking: What Examiners Reward |

WJEC mark schemes reward explicit media terminology, detailed reference to set products, coherent use of theory and clear evaluation. Vague answers such as ‘The poster is bright and stands out’ will not reach higher bands.

Higher-level answers show synthesis: they connect representation to audience effects, or link industry decisions to historical context. They also evaluate: is the strategy effective? For whom? What are the limitations?

Use command words carefully. ‘Identify’ needs brief points; ‘Explain’ needs reasons; ‘Analyse’ needs breaking down elements; ‘Evaluate’ needs judgement with evidence.

Command word | 指令词 What to do | 怎么做
Break down and examine how meaning is made | 分解并考察意义如何生成
Evaluate | 评价 Make a judgement supported by evidence | 用证据支持作出判断

12. Revision Plan for Cross-Curricular Success |

Build a revision plan that alternates textual analysis, theory, industry knowledge and production practice. Use flashcards for terminology, mind maps for set product case studies, and timed answers for integrated questions.

Each week, choose one set product and analyse it through four lenses: media language, representation, audience and industry. Then add a cross-curricular link: What historical event shaped it? What business model supports it? What psychological need does it meet?

Practice integrated paragraphs rather than isolated facts. For example, write one paragraph that starts with a visual code, connects it to a representation, explains the possible audience response and links to industry context. This trains the synthesis needed for top marks.

Finally, review command words, PEEL structure and common mark scheme descriptors before the exam. Confidence comes from knowing not only media content but also how knowledge from other subjects enriches your answer.
