📚 IGCSE WJEC Philosophy Winter Intensive Revision Plan | IGCSE WJEC
Winter break is a decisive window for IGCSE WJEC Philosophy students. A focused plan allows you to consolidate the specification, close knowledge gaps, and build the evaluation skills that distinguish top-band answers.
1. Know the WJEC Specification and Assessment Objectives | 熟悉 WJEC 考纲与评估目标
Before any revision, download the current WJEC specification and highlight exactly which topics appear in the Philosophy and Ethics units. WJEC questions are built around assessment objectives: AO1 requires knowledge and understanding, while AO2 requires analysis and evaluation.
Many students lose marks because they revise content but do not practise the skill of evaluation. You need to know not only what a scholar claims, but also how strong the argument is, what objections exist, and whether a religious believer can still defend the view.
Keep the specification beside every revision session. When you read a topic, ask yourself: can I define this term, can I explain this argument, and can I evaluate this argument with a balanced judgement?
2. Build a Topic Audit and Personal Priority List |
List every topic from the specification and rate your confidence as Red, Amber or Green. Red means you cannot explain it, Amber means you know some parts, and Green means you can explain and evaluate it confidently.
Use past papers and mark schemes to identify high-frequency topics such as the design argument, cosmological argument, evil and suffering, utilitarianism, situation ethics, abortion, euthanasia and animal rights. Prioritise Red and Amber topics in the first half of the winter break.
Do not spend all your time rewriting neat notes. The audit is meant to reveal exactly where marks are being lost, so turn each Red topic into a short learning objective such as ‘explain Paley’s watchmaker analogy and evaluate Hume’s objections’.
3. Structure a 10-Day Winter Timetable |
A useful plan alternates between philosophy of religion and ethics so that you stay engaged. The following table gives a balanced 10-day sequence, assuming two focused sessions per day of about 45 minutes each.
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Nature of God, omnipotence, omniscience, benevolence | 上帝的本性:全能、全知、全善 | Definitions and one AO2 paragraph | 定义加一段 AO2 评价 |
| Day 2 | Design argument: Paley, Tennant, Swinburne | 设计论证:佩利、坦南特、斯温伯恩 | Essay plan with three evaluation points | 含三个评价点的论文提纲 |
| Day 4 | Religious experience and revelation | 宗教经验与启示 | Examples and strengths/weaknesses | 案例与优缺点分析 |
| Day 5 | Problem of evil and suffering; Augustinian and Irenaean responses | 恶与苦难问题;奥古斯丁和爱任纽式回应 | Evaluative paragraph for each response | 每种回应的评价段落 |
| Day 6 | Ethics: absolute and relative morality; utilitarianism | 伦理学:绝对与相对道德;功利主义 | Bentham vs Mill summary | 边沁与密尔对比总结 |
| Day 7 | Kantian ethics and situation ethics | 康德伦理学与情境伦理学 | Two essay introductions | 两篇论文开头段 |
| Day 8 | Applied ethics: abortion and euthanasia | 应用伦理学:堕胎与安乐死 | Balanced arguments for and against | 正反两方平衡论证 |
| Day 9 | Exam technique, command words and mark schemes | 答题技巧、指令词与评分标准 | One full 12-mark answer under timed conditions | 限时完成一道 12 分题 |
| Day 10 | Full mock paper, self-mark and improve | 完整模拟卷、自行批改与改进 | Marked paper plus three improvement targets | 批改后的试卷加三个改进目标 |
Keep the timetable realistic. If a session runs over, do not drop sleep or the next day’s planning time; instead reduce the amount of content covered in one sitting.
4. Master Command Words and Exam Technique |
WJEC questions use command words carefully. ‘Define’ asks for a precise meaning, ‘Describe’ asks for characteristics or details, ‘Explain’ asks for causes, reasons or mechanisms, and ‘Evaluate’ asks you to weigh strengths, weaknesses and possible alternatives.
For a 12-mark evaluation question, do not simply list arguments. Use a structure such as Point, Evidence, Explanation and Evaluation. Start with a clear judgement, support it with a scholar or example, explain how that evidence works, then consider an opposing view before returning to your judgement.
For example, if asked whether the design argument proves God exists, a high-band answer might say: ‘The design argument is persuasive because order appears purposeful, as Paley argues; however, Hume’s criticisms show that analogy is weak and that the designer would not necessarily be the God of classical theism. Therefore the argument strengthens faith but does not prove God.’
5. Philosophy of Religion: Key Arguments |
The design argument claims that order, purpose and complexity in the world point to a designer. Paley uses the watchmaker analogy: a watch found on a heath must have a watchmaker, so the universe with its complex parts must have a divine designer. Tennant develops the anthropic principle, while Swinburne argues that the universe is more probable if God exists.
The cosmological argument says the universe requires a first cause or sufficient reason. Aquinas argues from motion and causation to an unmoved mover and uncaused cause. The Kalam version argues that everything that begins to exist has a cause; the universe began to exist, so it has a cause, which is God. Leibniz asks why there is something rather than nothing and posits a sufficient reason.
The problem of evil challenges belief in an all-powerful and all-loving God. The Augustinian response sees evil as a privation of good caused by free will, while the Irenaean response sees evil as necessary for soul-making and moral growth. Both responses can be evaluated: they offer possible solutions but may not fully address the scale of suffering.
6. Ethics: Normative Theories and Applied Issues |
Utilitarianism is a consequentialist theory that judges actions by their outcomes. Bentham’s act utilitarianism uses the hedonic calculus to maximise pleasure and minimise pain. Mill develops rule utilitarianism and distinguishes higher and lower pleasures, arguing that intellectual pleasures are superior to bodily ones.
Kantian ethics is deontological: actions are right or wrong in themselves, not because of consequences. Kant’s categorical imperative states that you should act only according to that maxim which you can at the same time will to become a universal law, and you should treat persons as ends, never merely as means. This gives a strong account of human dignity but can be rigid in difficult cases.
Situation ethics, developed by Fletcher, places agape love as the only absolute rule. It argues that the most loving action in a situation is the right action, allowing flexibility for personal circumstances. Critics say this can become too subjective and unpredictable, but supporters value its compassion.
In applied ethics, abortion and euthanasia debates use these theories. A utilitarian may allow abortion if it leads to less suffering, while a Kantian may argue that the foetus should not be treated merely as a means. Situation ethics focuses on whether ending a life is the most loving response in the particular case. You should practise applying the same theory to both sides of an issue before reaching a judgement.
7. Key Scholars, Quotes and Terminology |
Examiners reward precise terminology and accurate use of scholars. Build a personal glossary rather than trying to memorise the textbook word for word. The table below summarises key scholars and their contribution.
| Irenaeus | 爱任纽 | Evil enables soul-making and growth | 恶使人塑魂与成长 | Respond to problem of evil | 回应恶的问题 |
For each term, write a one-sentence definition, one example, and one sentence that evaluates the idea. This turns passive recognition into active exam-ready knowledge.
8. Practise Structured 12-Mark Essays |
Longer WJEC questions require a clear line of argument. Use a five-part paragraph structure: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Evaluation, Link. This prevents vague answers and shows the examiner that you can sustain a balanced judgement.
For example, on the question ‘Evaluate the claim that the problem of evil disproves the existence of God’, write: Point: the logical problem of evil is a strong challenge because it exposes a contradiction. Evidence: Epicurus and Hume argue that an omnipotent and benevolent God would prevent evil. Explanation: if God cannot prevent evil, God is not omnipotent; if God will not prevent evil, God is not benevolent. Evaluation: however, the free will defence and the Irenaean soul-making theodicy show that evil may be logically compatible with God’s purposes. Link: therefore the problem of evil challenges a simplistic view of God but does not conclusively disprove classical theism.
After writing, compare your answer with the mark scheme. Identify where you achieved AO1 knowledge and where you demonstrated AO2 evaluation. If most of your paragraph is descriptive, add an objection or a counter-argument in the margin.
9. Use a Revision Cycle: Learn, Self-Test, Mark, Improve |
For each topic, follow a four-step cycle. First, active reading for about 20 minutes: annotate, draw diagrams, or make flashcards. Second, closed-book recall for 15 minutes: write everything you can remember from the topic without notes. Third, self-mark for 10 minutes using your notes or a mark scheme. Fourth, improve for 15 minutes: rewrite the weakest part with extra evidence or evaluation.
Repeat the cycle after two days for the same topic. Spaced repetition strengthens long-term memory far more than reading the same page many times in one day.
Keep a simple log of each session: topic, cycle stage, confidence rating before and after. This shows real progress and prevents the feeling of ‘I have revised but do not know if it worked’.
10. Manage Time, Stress and Exam-Day Strategy |
In the final days, complete at least one full practice paper under timed conditions. Sit in a quiet space, use only the permitted equipment, and do not stop until the time is up. This builds the mental stamina needed for the real exam.
When the exam begins, read every question before writing. Allocate time according to marks: for example, do not spend 20 minutes on a 2-mark definition. A 12-mark essay should be planned for two or three minutes before you write.
Manage stress by keeping a regular sleep schedule, taking short breaks, and avoiding last-minute cramming. On the day before the exam, review your topic audit and key term cards rather than trying to learn new material.
