A few hints on how to study effectively |

📚 A few hints on how to study effectively |

Studying A-Level Economics is not just about memorising definitions; it is about learning to think like an economist. Many students work hard but still lose marks because they focus on the wrong things. These hints target the Cambridge International AS & A Level Economics syllabus and aim to make revision sharper and more efficient.

1. Understand the assessment objectives |

Cambridge assessment objectives split marks between knowledge and understanding (AO1), application (AO2), analysis (AO3) and evaluation (AO4). If you do not know what each objective rewards, you may write a lot but score little.

For example, a 12-mark essay typically expects a definition, a diagram, application to the case, a chain of analysis, and a justified evaluation. Practise labelling each part of your answer with its AO.

Before every revision session, ask yourself: ‘Which AO am I strengthening right now?’ This keeps your study targeted rather than vague.

2. Build a command-word glossary |

Command words such as ‘explain’, ‘analyse’, ‘discuss’ and ‘evaluate’ signal different depth. ‘Explain’ needs a cause-and-effect chain; ‘discuss’ requires both sides and a judgement.

Make a one-page glossary: for each command word, write what the examiner expects, how many paragraphs, and whether a diagram is needed.

Use this glossary when attempting questions. If a question says ‘evaluate’, do not stop at two paragraphs of explanation; you must weigh alternatives and reach a conclusion.

3. Use diagrams as thinking tools |

Diagrams are not decorations. A correctly labelled supply-demand diagram, externalities graph or AD/AS model can earn analysis marks and make your explanation clearer.

Practise drawing diagrams from memory under timed conditions. Label every axis, curve, equilibrium point, and shift direction.

For quantitative questions, keep the key formulas visible in your notes:

PED = %ΔQd ÷ %ΔP

PES = %ΔQs ÷ %ΔP

A diagram without explanation only earns partial credit, so always write one or two sentences describing what your diagram shows.

4. Practise chain of reasoning |

Analysis marks come from showing how one change leads to another. Avoid jumping from a cause directly to a final outcome.

Use connective phrases: ‘This raises costs, which reduces supply, putting upward pressure on price.’ Then link to the next effect.

Your chain should flow from cause to mechanism to consequence. If your paragraph has no ‘because’, ‘which leads to’, or ‘therefore’, it probably lacks analysis.

5. Link theory to real-world examples |

Application requires using the case study or real-world context. Generic answers lose marks even if theory is correct.

Keep a notebook of current examples: airline fuel surcharges for costs, sugar taxes for externalities, housing shortages for supply constraints.

When revising a topic, force yourself to name one real firm, policy, or market event before moving on. This builds application skill automatically.

6. Master evaluation skills |

Evaluation means weighing alternatives, considering time lags, stakeholder effects, and the extent of change. It is not just writing ‘on the other hand’.

Use evaluative stems: ‘This depends on…’, ‘In the short run… but in the long run…’, ‘The magnitude matters because…’

High-scoring answers make a judgement that follows from the evidence, not a fence-sitting statement. Decide which argument is stronger and say why.

7. Active recall and spaced repetition |

Passively reading notes creates false confidence. Close the book and test yourself: define terms, draw diagrams, list causes.

Use spaced repetition: review material after one day, three days, one week, and one month to strengthen long-term memory.

Flashcards with a question on one side and a diagram-plus-definition on the other work well for economics concepts like elasticity, market failure, and monetary policy.

8. Past paper discipline |

Past papers are the best predictor of exam style. Do them with the mark scheme first, then without support.

Time each question. A 20-mark essay should not take 45 minutes if the total paper allows only 30. Build a time budget.

Attempt at least five full timed papers before your final exam. Mark them strictly and record your score per assessment objective.

9. Use examiner reports and mark schemes |

Examiner reports reveal common mistakes, such as equilibrium mislabelling or evaluation added as an afterthought. Read them before attempting a paper.

Mark schemes show exactly where marks are awarded. Compare your answer to the ‘indicative content’ and note missing steps.

Highlight recurring examiner comments and turn them into a checklist. Before submitting any practice essay, tick off each point.

10. Review mistakes systematically |

After marking your work, categorise errors: knowledge gap, diagram error, weak analysis, missing evaluation, or time pressure.

Keep a mistake log. Before your next paper, review the log and set one specific target, such as ‘label all axes’ or ‘add one evaluative paragraph’.

Over time, your mistake log will show patterns. If evaluation errors keep appearing, spend a whole session writing only evaluative conclusions.

11. Plan essays before writing |

Spending three minutes planning can save ten minutes of unstructured writing. List your main points, diagram, and evaluation angle before starting.

A simple plan for a discuss question: two points for, two points against, one evaluative judgement. Add a diagram where it supports the analysis.

Do not skip planning when under time pressure. Even 30 seconds of bullet points improves paragraph order and prevents repetition.

12. Build exam-day routines |

Your brain performs best when it knows what to expect. In the final two weeks, practise waking up and starting a past paper at the same time as the real exam.

Prepare a one-page summary sheet for each major topic: key definitions, formulas, diagrams, and three evaluation phrases.

On exam day, read the question twice, underline command words, allocate time per mark, and leave two minutes for final checks.
