📚 Different Types of Feminism |
Feminism is a broad political ideology and social movement that seeks to understand and end gender-based oppression. In Edexcel A-Level Politics, feminist thinkers are studied not as a single unified school but as a range of competing traditions. Each type offers a different diagnosis of why women are oppressed and a different strategy for achieving equality.
1. Feminism: Core Ideas |
A key distinction in feminist theory is between sex (biological differences) and gender (socially constructed roles). Most feminists argue that gender roles are not natural but are imposed through socialisation, law and culture. Another central slogan is ‘the personal is political’, meaning that experiences such as housework, sexuality and family life are shaped by public power structures and must be analysed politically.
Feminists also analyse patriarchy, the system of male domination that operates through family, work, the state and culture. However, the schools disagree about whether patriarchy is the only or primary cause of oppression, and whether it can be reformed away or must be abolished.
2. Liberal Feminism |
Liberal feminism focuses on achieving gender equality through legal and political reform within existing structures. It does not seek to overthrow capitalism or the state but to remove barriers to women’s participation in public life. It treats women and men as fundamentally similar in rationality and potential.
Key thinkers include Mary Wollstonecraft, who argued that women’s apparent inferiority was due to lack of education; John Stuart Mill, who demanded equal suffrage and legal rights; and Betty Friedan, who critiqued the ‘feminine mystique’ that confined women to domestic roles. Liberal feminists have influenced equal pay, anti-discrimination and reproductive rights legislation.
