📚 Forces & Shape |
In physics, a force is a push or pull that can change the motion, direction, or shape of an object. When forces act on objects, they can cause stretching, compressing, or bending — all forms of deformation. Understanding the relationship between forces and shape is essential for the Edexcel IGCSE Physics syllabus, particularly when studying Hooke’s Law and elastic behaviour.
1. What is a Force? |
A force is a vector quantity, meaning it has both magnitude and direction. Forces are measured in newtons (N). When multiple forces act on an object, they can be combined to produce a resultant force. If the resultant force is zero, the object is said to be in equilibrium.
-
Magnitude: how large the force is, measured in newtons (N).
-
-
Direction: where the force is applied, represented by arrows in diagrams.
-
A force can be represented by an arrow: the length of the arrow represents the magnitude, and the direction of the arrow represents the direction of the force. For example, to represent a force of 10 N acting to the right, an arrow 5 cm long could be used with a scale of 1 cm = 2 N.
2. Contact and Non-Contact Forces |
Forces can be classified into two main categories: contact forces and non-contact forces. Contact forces require physical contact between two objects, while non-contact forces act at a distance.
When studying forces and shape, tension forces (pulling forces) and compression forces (pushing forces) are of particular interest. A tension force stretches an object, while a compression force squeezes it.
3. Effects of Forces on Shape |
When a force is applied to an object, it can change the object’s shape. This is called deformation. There are three main types of deformation: stretching, compressing, and bending.
-
Stretching: the object becomes longer, e.g., pulling a spring or an elastic band.
-
-
Compressing: the object becomes shorter, e.g., squeezing a sponge or compressing a spring.
-
-
Bending: the object curves, e.g., bending a ruler or a metal bar.
-
An important concept here is extension, defined as the increase in length of an object when a force is applied:
extension = new length − original length
For a spring, if the original length is 10 cm and after applying a force the new length is 14 cm, the extension is 4 cm.
4. Hooke’s Law |
Hooke’s Law states that the extension of an object (such as a spring) is directly proportional to the applied force, provided that the limit of proportionality is not exceeded.
F = kx
Where F is the applied force in newtons (N), k is the spring constant in newtons per metre (N/m), and x is the extension in metres (m).
For example, if a spring has a spring constant of 50 N/m and is extended by 0.2 m, the force applied is:
F = 50 × 0.2 = 10
