📚 Gross Domestic Product, Gross National Product and Gross National Income |
In Cambridge A-Level Economics, national income accounting is a foundational topic. Students often confuse gross domestic product (GDP), gross national product (GNP) and gross national income (GNI). This article clarifies each concept, explains how they are measured and linked, and considers their usefulness in assessing living standards.
1. The Purpose of National Income Accounting |
National income accounting provides a systematic framework for measuring the total economic activity of a country. It allows economists, governments and international organisations to compare output over time and between countries, and to design macroeconomic policy.
The three central aggregates – GDP, GNP and GNI – differ according to whether they measure activity within a country’s borders, activity by a country’s nationals, or income accruing to a country’s residents. These differences are not just technical; they affect international comparisons, policy decisions and development rankings.
For Cambridge exams, candidates need to know the precise definitions, the formulas connecting them, and the reasons why a country might record a large gap between GDP and the other two measures.
Gross domestic product is the total market value of all final goods and services produced within a country’s borders during a given time period, usually a year or a quarter. It uses market prices to aggregate different types of output.
The word ‘gross’ means that depreciation of capital is not subtracted. The word ‘domestic’ means the measure is based on location, not nationality. A Japanese factory in the UK contributes to UK GDP, while a British factory in Vietnam contributes to Vietnam’s GDP.
Only final goods and services are counted to avoid double counting. For example, the value of steel sold to a car manufacturer is not counted separately if the final car price already includes it. Similarly, the sale of second-hand goods, such as used cars, is excluded from GDP because no new production has taken place that period.
Financial transactions such as the purchase of shares or government transfer payments are also excluded because they do not represent the production of new goods or services.
3. Three Approaches to Measuring GDP | 衡量 GDP 的三种方法
GDP can be measured using three equivalent approaches: the output approach, the income approach and the expenditure approach. In theory, all three should give the same total because one person’s spending is another person’s income.
The output approach sums the value added at each stage of production. Value added is the value of output minus the cost of intermediate inputs. Suppose a farmer sells wheat for $100, a miller sells flour for $160, and a baker sells bread for $250. The value added at each stage is $100, $60 and $90, giving a total contribution to GDP of $250, the final value of the bread.
The income approach sums all factor incomes earned in production: wages and salaries for labour, rent for land, interest for capital and profit for entrepreneurship. Adding taxes less subsidies on products converts factor cost to market prices.
The expenditure approach is the most common in textbooks and is written as:
GDP = C + I + G + (X − M)
Where C is household consumption, I is investment, G is government spending, X is exports, and M is imports. The term (X − M) is net exports. Investment includes business fixed investment, residential construction and changes in inventories.
