📚 How to Write in a Clear and Effective Way in A-Level Economics | A-Level 经济学科清晰高效写作指南

Clear economic writing is not just about knowing content; it is about showing the examiner that you can use economic concepts precisely, build analysis step by step, and reach a supported judgement. This guide explains practical techniques for Cambridge A-Level Economics essays and data responses.

清晰的经济写作不只在于掌握知识,更在于向考官展示你能够精确运用经济学概念、一步步构建分析,并得出有依据的判断。本指南解释适用于剑桥 A-Level 经济学论文题和数据分析题的实用技巧。

1. Understand command words and question focus | 理解指令词与问题焦点

Before writing anything, underline the command word and the key economic concept in the question. Command words such as ‘explain’, ‘discuss’, ‘evaluate’ and ‘assess’ signal different levels of analytical and evaluative demand.

动笔之前,先圈出题目中的指令词和关键经济概念。’explain’、’discuss’、’evaluate’、’assess’ 等指令词代表不同层次的分析与评价要求。

For example, ‘Explain how a higher interest rate may reduce inflation’ requires a causal chain, whereas ‘Evaluate the effectiveness of monetary policy in controlling inflation’ also requires weighing benefits, costs and alternative policies.

例如,’Explain how a higher interest rate may reduce inflation’ 需要因果链;而 ‘Evaluate the effectiveness of monetary policy in controlling inflation’ 还需要权衡收益、成本与替代政策。

A common mistake is to answer the topic rather than the exact question. If the question says ‘to what extent’, you must show that the outcome is not absolute and depends on conditions.

一个常见错误是针对主题作答而非针对具体问题。如果题目要求 ‘to what extent’,你就必须说明结果并非绝对,而取决于条件。

2. Define key economic terms precisely | 精确界定关键经济术语

Start your answer by defining the main terms in the question, but do not copy the question. A precise definition shows knowledge and sets boundaries for analysis.

作答时先定义题目中的主要术语,但不要照抄题干。准确的定义能展示知识并为分析设定边界。

For instance, ‘inflation’ should be defined as a sustained increase in the general price level, not just ‘prices going up’. Likewise, ‘unemployment’ means those actively seeking work but unable to find it, not everyone without a job.

例如,’inflation’ 应定义为总体价格水平的持续上升,而非简单的 ‘价格上涨’。同样,’unemployment’ 指积极寻找工作却未能找到的人,而不是所有没有工作的人。

Do not over-define every word; define only terms central to the question. Use short, exam-ready definitions that can be written quickly under time pressure.

不要过度定义每个词,只定义题目核心术语。使用简短、适合考试的规范定义,以便在时间压力下快速写出。

3. Use diagrams with labels and references | 使用标注清晰的图表并引用

In A-Level Economics, a correctly labelled diagram can immediately raise the quality of an explanation. Draw at least one diagram when the question involves markets, macroeconomic equilibrium, tariffs, externalities, or exchange rates.

在 A-Level 经济学中,正确标注的图表能立刻提升解释质量。当题目涉及市场、宏观经济均衡、关税、外部性或汇率时,至少画一个图。

A diagram must be fully labelled: axes, curves, equilibrium points, and shifts. After drawing, always refer to it in your text, for example ‘As shown in Figure 1, the demand curve shifts from D₁ to D₂’.

图表必须完整标注:坐标轴、曲线、均衡点和移动。画图后一定要在正文中引用,例如 ‘As shown in Figure 1, the demand curve shifts from D₁ to D₂’。

Do not let a diagram stand alone. Explain the cause of the shift and the new equilibrium. A diagram without explanation gains little credit because the examiner cannot see your reasoning.

不要让图表孤立存在。要解释曲线移动的原因和新均衡。没有解释的图表几乎不得分,因为考官无法看到你的推理。

4. Build a logical chain of reasoning | 构建逻辑推理链

Examiners reward logical ‘chains’ in which each step follows from the previous one. Avoid jumping from cause to final effect without explaining the transmission mechanism.

考官奖励每一步都由前一步推出的逻辑 ‘链条’。避免从原因直接跳到最终结果而不解释传导机制。

For example, for expansionary monetary policy: lower interest rate → cheaper borrowing → higher consumption and investment → increase in aggregate demand → upward pressure on real GDP and price level. Write each step explicitly.

例如,扩张性货币政策:降低利率 → 借贷成本下降 → 消费和投资增加 → 总需求增加 → 实际 GDP 和价格水平面临上行压力。每一步都要明确写出。

Use connective words such as ‘therefore’, ‘this leads to’, ‘consequently’, and ‘as a result’ to show the causal direction. This makes the chain visible to the examiner.

使用 ‘therefore’、’this leads to’、’consequently’、’as a result’ 等连接词来显示因果方向。这能让考官清楚地看到推理链。

5. Apply real-world examples concisely | 简洁运用现实例子

Application marks come from using relevant examples to support analysis. Examples should be specific enough to show context, but not so detailed that they replace economic reasoning.

应用分来自使用相关例子支持分析。例子应足够具体以体现背景,但不应详细到取代经济推理。

For a question on supply-side policy, you might write: ‘The UK’s 2023 increase in childcare subsidies aimed to raise labour force participation by lowering the opportunity cost of work for parents.’

对于供给侧政策的题目,可以写:’英国2023年增加育儿补贴,旨在通过降低父母工作的机会成本来提高劳动参与率。’

Keep examples brief. One or two well-chosen examples per essay are usually better than a list of many undeveloped ones. Always connect the example back to the economic concept.

例子要简短。一篇论文通常一到两个精选例子比罗列许多未展开的例子更好。始终将例子回扣到经济概念上。

6. Distinguish analysis from evaluation | 区分分析与评价

Analysis explains how a policy or event works; evaluation judges how significant, effective, or desirable it is. Many students lose marks by only analysing and never evaluating.

分析解释政策或事件如何运作;评价判断其重要性、有效性或可取程度。许多学生只分析不评价而失分。

Evaluation can include: short-run versus long-run effects, impact on different stakeholders, the size of elasticities, time lags, unintended consequences, and dependency on assumptions.

评价可以包括:短期与长期影响、对不同利益相关者的影响、弹性大小、时滞、意外后果以及对假设的依赖。

For example, after explaining how a tariff protects domestic producers, evaluate by noting that consumers face higher prices and that retaliation may reduce net welfare.

例如,在解释关税如何保护国内生产者之后,评价时指出消费者面临更高价格,且报复可能降低净福利。

7. Use economic terminology accurately | 准确使用经济术语

Using precise economic vocabulary boosts clarity and demonstrates knowledge. Say ‘aggregate demand’ rather than ‘total spending in the economy’, and ‘external cost’ rather than ‘bad effect on others’.

使用精确的经济词汇能提升清晰度并体现知识。用 ‘aggregate demand’ 而不是 ‘total spending in the economy’,用 ‘external cost’ 而不是 ‘bad effect on others’。

However, never use a technical term unless you are confident of its meaning. Misused terms, such as confusing ‘investment’ with buying shares, can damage credibility and reduce marks.

然而,除非你确定术语的含义,否则不要使用。误用术语,例如把 ‘investment’ 与购买股票混淆,会损害可信度并降低得分。

Build a personal glossary of key terms for each topic: elasticity, market failure, monetary policy, current account, and so on. Review it before the exam.

为每个主题建立自己的关键术语表:弹性、市场失灵、货币政策、经常账户等。考前复习这些术语。

8. Structure paragraphs: point, explanation, evidence | 段落结构:论点、解释、证据

Each paragraph should make one clear point. A practical structure is PEE: Point, Explanation, Evidence (or Example). This prevents rambling and keeps the answer focused.

每段应提出一个清晰论点。实用的结构是 PEE:论点、解释、证据(或例子)。这能防止跑题并保持答案聚焦。

For instance: Point: A minimum wage can reduce employment in perfectly competitive labour markets. Explanation: a wage above equilibrium creates excess supply of labour. Evidence: some studies of fast-food sectors show employment fell after minimum wage increases.

例如:论点:在完全竞争的劳动力市场中,最低工资可能减少就业。解释:高于均衡的工资会造成劳动力超额供给。证据:一些快餐行业的研究显示最低工资上调后就业下降。

In longer essays, link the final sentence back to the question or forward to the next point to maintain coherence.

在较长的论文中,最后一句要回扣题目或引出下一点,以保持连贯。

9. Avoid common pitfalls: assertion, repetition, vague language | 避免常见失误:断言、重复、模糊语言

Do not make unsupported assertions such as ‘inflation is bad’ without explaining why. Every claim should be followed by a reason or mechanism.

不要写未经支撑的断言,例如 ‘inflation is bad’ 而不解释原因。每个主张都应紧跟理由或机制。

Avoid repetition of the same idea in different words to fill space. Examiners recognise padding quickly and it rarely earns extra marks.

避免用不同措辞重复同一观点来凑字数。考官很容易识别凑字数,且通常不会加分。

Replace vague language like ‘things get better’ with specific outcomes: ‘real incomes rise’, ‘unemployment falls’, or ‘the current account deficit narrows’.

用具体结果替代模糊语言,如 ‘things get better’ 改为 ‘real incomes rise’、’unemployment falls’ 或 ‘the current account deficit narrows’。

10. Manage time and plan before writing | 管理时间与写作前规划

Spend three to five minutes planning before writing an essay. Note the key definitions, one or two diagrams, the main analytical chain, and evaluation points.

动笔前花三到五分钟规划。列出关键定义、一两个图表、主要分析链和评价点。

A simple plan might look like: Define inflation and monetary policy; Diagram AD/AS; Analysis: higher rates → lower consumption/investment → lower AD → lower inflation; Evaluation: time lags, impact on exchange rate, supply-side inflation limits.

简单计划可以像这样:定义通胀和货币政策;画 AD/AS 图;分析:利率上升 → 消费/投资下降 → AD 下降 → 通胀下降;评价:时滞、对汇率的影响、供给侧通胀的局限。

Planning also helps you allocate time. For a 20-mark essay, leave enough time to write at least one developed evaluation paragraph rather than running out of time after analysis.

规划还有助于分配时间。对于20分的论文题,留出足够时间至少写一段充分的评价,而不是分析完就没有时间了。

11. Evaluation skills: prioritise, weigh, consider context | 评价技巧:权衡、排序、考虑情境

Strong evaluation does not simply list strengths and weaknesses; it weighs them. Use phrases such as ‘The extent depends on…’ and ‘In the short run… but in the long run…’.

有力的评价不是简单罗列优点和缺点,而是进行权衡。使用 ‘The extent depends on…’、’In the short run… but in the long run…’ 等句式。

Consider the magnitude of elasticities. For example, a tax on cigarettes is less effective in reducing consumption if demand is price inelastic, but it may still raise substantial revenue.

考虑弹性大小。例如,如果香烟需求价格缺乏弹性,对香烟征税在减少消费方面效果有限,但仍可能带来大量财政收入。

Always mention alternative policies or viewpoints. An answer that says ‘a better alternative would be…’ demonstrates higher-order judgement and improves evaluation marks.

一定要提及替代政策或观点。写出 ‘a better alternative would be…’ 能体现高阶判断并提高评价分。

Remember that evaluation is not a separate paragraph only at the end; it can be woven throughout or developed at the end, depending on the question.

记住评价不只是最后单独一段;可以贯穿全文或在结尾展开,具体取决于题目。

12. Review and proofread for clarity | 检查与润色以确保清晰

In the final minutes, reread your answer. Check that diagrams are labelled, that each paragraph links to the question, and that you have not used vague terms.

最后几分钟重读答案。检查图表是否标注、每段是否扣题、是否使用了模糊术语。

Correct obvious slips such as ‘demand increases’ when you mean ‘quantity demanded increases’, because this changes the economic meaning entirely.

修改明显笔误,例如把 ‘quantity demanded increases’ 写成 ‘demand increases’,因为这会完全改变经济含义。

If time is short, first ensure that your conclusion or evaluation is clear, because that is where many marks can be gained or lost.

如果时间紧张,优先确保结论或评价清晰,因为那里往往是得失分的关键。
