1. Tempo Markings (Italian) |

Tempo terms are among the most frequently tested items in the listening exam. You must know the approximate beats per minute (BPM) order and the exact English translation of each.

Approx. BPM
Grave Very slow and solemn
Largo Broadly, very slow
Adagio Slowly
Andante At a walking pace
Moderato Moderately
Allegro Fast and lively
Vivace Lively, briskly
Presto Very fast

Memory tip: Remember the order by this phrase: ‘Go Look At My Cat And Visit Pet’ — Grave, Largo, Adagio, Moderato, Andante, Allegro, Vivace, Presto (slower to faster).

记忆技巧: 用一句顺口溜记忆由慢到快的次序:’逛 拉 小 狗 篮 球 比 赛’ —— Grave(极慢)→ Largo(广板)→ Adagio(柔板)→ Andante(行板)→ Moderato(中板)→ Allegro(快板)→ Vivace(活板)→ Presto(急板)。

Other common tempo modifiers include:

2. Dynamics & Articulation |

Dynamics describe the volume of the music. CAIE often asks you to identify dynamic changes and the Italian abbreviations used on scores.

pp Pianissimo Very soft 很弱
p Piano Soft
mp Mezzo-piano Moderately soft 中弱
mf Mezzo-forte Moderately loud 中强
f Forte Loud
ff Fortissimo Very loud 很强

Dynamic changes you must recognize:

  • Sforzando (sf / sfz) — a sudden, strong accent on one note |
  • Forte-piano (fp) — loud, then immediately soft |

Articulation terms tell you how to attack or connect individual notes:

  • Staccato — short, detached notes (dot above/below the note) |

3. Pitch, Melody & Intervals |

Melody questions in the listening paper ask you to describe the shape, direction, and movement of a melody. Here are the essential descriptors.

  • Conjunct motion — melody moves by step, using adjacent notes of the scale |
  • Disjunct motion — melody moves by leap, using larger intervals |
  • Scalic (scale-like) — moving up/down the scale |
  • Arpeggio / Broken chord — notes of a chord played in succession, not simultaneously |
  • Sequence — a melodic phrase repeated at a higher or lower pitch |
  • Ostinato — a persistently repeated musical pattern |

  • Trill (tr) — rapid alternation between a note and the note above it | 颤音
  • Contour — the overall shape of a melody (rising, falling, arch-shaped, wave-like) | 旋律线轮廓(上行、下行、拱形、波浪形)

Intervals (distance between two pitches) tested in CAIE:

  • Octave — the interval between a note and its nearest higher/lower counterpart (e.g. C–C’) | 八度

Interval naming: count the letter names inclusive, e.g. C–E = 3rd; C–G = 5th; C–C’ = 8ve (octave).

4. Harmony, Chords & Tonality |

Harmony questions require you to identify whether music is major or minor, whether chords are consonant or dissonant, and whether cadences are perfect, imperfect, plagal, or interrupted.

  • Chord — three or more notes played together |

  • Modulation — changing from one key to another within a piece | 转调
  • Tonic — the home note/keynote (1st degree), e.g. C in C major | 主音(第 I 级)
  • Dominant — the 5th degree of the scale; the chord built on it (V) | 属音(第 V 级)
  • Subdominant — the 4th degree of the scale (IV) | 下属音(第 IV 级)

Cadences (the punctuation of music):

Perfect (Authentic) V → I Complete, final, closed
Plagal IV → I Amen cadence, gentle finality
Imperfect (Half) Ends on V Pause, incomplete, expects continuation
Interrupted (Deceptive) V → VI Surprise, unexpected resolution

Major key = brighter, triumphant; Minor key = darker, sad; Remember: I–V–VI–IV is the most common pop chord progression.

5. Texture | 织体

Texture refers to how musical lines are layered. The examiner may ask you to describe whether music is monophonic, homophonic, or polyphonic at a given moment.

Memory: Mono = one line; Homy/Home = melody at home over a ‘sofa’ of chords; Poly = many lines.
