A-Level Mathematics builds directly on GCSE Higher Tier content, but the pace and depth are significantly greater. You will be expected to use algebraic techniques fluently without being prompted. The biggest jumps are in algebraic manipulation, graph sketching and mathematical proof.

Edexcel examinations use precise mathematical notation. You must be able to read and write set notation, function notation, and logical symbols. For example, the statement ‘p implies q’ is written p ⇒ q, and ‘p if and only if q’ is written p ⇔ q.

The quadratic formula is one of the most frequently used tools in the course. For a quadratic equation ax² + bx + c = 0, the solutions are given below.

Proof is a mandatory theme across the course. You may be asked to prove by deduction, exhaustion, or contradiction, or to disprove a statement by counterexample. A simple deduction: the sum of two odd integers is always even. Write odd numbers as 2n + 1 and 2m + 1; their sum is 2(n + m + 1), which is even.
