Measurement requires choosing the most appropriate instrument, reading it to the correct precision and recording data with units. Observation means detecting colour changes, precipitate formation, gas evolution, temperature changes or odours, and linking them to chemical processes.

The choice depends on the required precision. For a titration, a 25.0 cm³ pipette and a 50.0 cm³ burette are used because they give readings to 0.05 cm³, whereas a measuring cylinder is too imprecise for quantitative work.

Before use, a burette or pipette should be rinsed with distilled water and then with the solution it will contain. This prevents dilution by residual water and contamination by previous reagents. A volumetric flask is used to prepare a standard solution of accurately known concentration; the bottom of the meniscus must be level with the calibration mark at eye level.

Parallax error occurs if the eye is above or below the mark, causing the apparent reading to shift. For coloured solutions such as potassium manganate(VII), the top of the meniscus may be read because the bottom is not visible.

titre = 24.35 cm³ – 1.20 cm³ = 23.15 cm³
