📚 Addition Polymerisation and Polymers |
Addition polymerisation is a reaction in which many small alkene monomer molecules join together to form one giant polymer molecule. In this process, the carbon–carbon double bond of each monomer opens up, allowing the monomers to link into long chains without the loss of any small molecule.
1. What Is Addition Polymerisation? |
Addition polymerisation is a process in which unsaturated alkene monomers, each containing at least one C=C double bond, add together to form a long-chain polymer. Because the monomers are all alkenes, the polymerisation requires no other reactants, and no waste products such as water or hydrogen chloride are formed. The polymer contains exactly the same atoms as the combined monomers.
For example, ethene (C₂H₄) can polymerise to form poly(ethene), commonly known as polythene. The equation can be written as:
n CH₂=CH₂ → [–CH₂–CH₂–]ₙ
The symbol n represents a very large number of repeating units, typically thousands or even millions. A single polymer molecule is called a macromolecule, and the process of forming it is a type of chain-growth polymerisation.
2. Which Monomers Can Undergo Addition Polymerisation? |
Only monomers containing at least one carbon–carbon double bond (C=C) can undergo addition polymerisation. In A-Level chemistry, the most common monomers are alkenes and substituted alkenes — compounds in which one or more hydrogen atoms on the alkene have been replaced by a different atom or group, such as chlorine (–Cl), a methyl group (–CH₃), or a nitrile group (–C≡N).
Common examples of monomers include:
