📚 AQA GCSE Drama: Past Papers and Mark Schemes | AQA GCSE

The AQA GCSE Drama course is a balanced qualification: it demands creative imagination in performance, but it also requires precise, analytical writing in the written examination. Understanding past papers and mark schemes is one of the most effective ways to raise your grade, because they reveal exactly what examiners expect you to show in every question.

AQA GCSE

1. Understanding the AQA GCSE Drama Exam Structure |

Before you open a past paper, you need to know the shape of the whole qualification. AQA GCSE Drama is divided into three components. Component 1 is the written exam; Components 2 and 3 are non-exam assessments, which means they are completed in school and moderated or assessed by AQA.

3 Texts in Practice | 文本实践 Two performed extracts | 两段表演片段 40 20%

The ratio of written to practical assessment means that the exam paper is not an afterthought; it is worth the same as your entire devising project. A serious revision plan must therefore treat Component 1 as a core priority.

2. Component 1: Understanding Drama |

The written paper lasts 1 hour 45 minutes and is worth 80 marks. It has three sections. Section A is a set of multiple-choice questions on theatre roles, staging configurations and specialist terminology. This section is worth 4 marks and is designed to test your basic knowledge of the theatre.

Section B is the study of a set play. You will answer questions on one play chosen by your centre, such as a modern or classical drama studied in depth. This section is worth 44 marks and often includes an extract-based question, followed by a broader question about the whole play. You must show knowledge of characters, relationships, themes, staging and the social or historical context of the play.

Section C is the live theatre response. You will write about a live performance you have seen, analysing and evaluating the work of performers and possibly designers. This section is worth 32 marks and is the most challenging section for many students because it requires personal response supported by precise theatrical detail.

3. Component 2: Devising Drama |

Component 2 is the devising unit. You will work with a stimulus, create a piece of original drama, and then keep a written devising log. The devising log is worth 60 marks, and the final performance is worth 20 marks. Together these make up 40% of the GCSE.

The AQA devising log is divided into three stages. The first stage is ‘Creating and developing ideas’. The second is ‘Rehearsing and refining’. The third is ‘Analysing and evaluating’. Each stage is worth 20 marks, and the language of these headings tells you exactly what the examiner wants to see at each point.

Past papers do not apply directly to Component 2, but AQA publishes exemplar logs and grade descriptions. These are essential resources because they show how to turn a personal rehearsal diary into an analytical document. A high-scoring log does not simply say what happened; it explains why decisions were made and how meaning was communicated to the audience.

4. Component 3: Texts in Practice |

Component 3 is a practical performance unit. You will prepare two extracts from the same play and perform them to a visiting examiner. The total mark is 40, which is worth 20% of the GCSE. Each extract is marked separately out of 20.

The mark scheme for this component focuses on AO2: applying theatrical skills to realise artistic intentions. This means the examiner is looking at your use of voice, physicality, spatial awareness and interaction with other performers. You are not being marked on your accent or costume, but on how convincingly you interpret the role and communicate meaning to an audience.

To prepare for this component, you should watch filmed theatre or live productions, not only to enjoy them, but to notice how actors make choices. The practical exam is a performance, but it is also a form of critical interpretation. Your rehearsal notes should include clear statements about your character’s objective, obstacle, status and relationship to others.

5. Assessment Objectives Explained |

All AQA GCSE qualifications are marked using four Assessment Objectives, usually called AOs. The examiners use these objectives to decide what a piece of work is really showing. If you understand the AOs, you will find it much easier to read a mark scheme.

Assessment Objective | 评估目标 What it means | 含义 Weighting | 权重
AO1 Create and develop ideas to communicate meaning for theatrical performance |
AO2 Apply theatrical skills to realise artistic intentions in live performance |
AO3 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how drama and theatre is developed and performed |
AO4 Analyse and evaluate their own work and the work of others |

In Component 1, Section B is mainly testing AO3, while Section C is mainly testing AO4. In Component 2, the devising log tests AO1 and AO4, while the performance tests AO2. In Component 3, the aim is AO2. This mapping means you should learn to switch between different modes of thinking when you move from one section of the exam paper to another.

6. How to Use Past Papers Effectively |

Simply printing a past paper and reading it is not revision. The greatest gains come from practising under realistic conditions and then comparing your response with the mark scheme. Start by doing individual sections rather than full papers, so you can develop one skill at a time.

Time management is critical. The written paper has 80 marks in 105 minutes, which is just over 1.3 minutes per mark. A sensible split would be around 5 minutes for Section A, 55 minutes for Section B, and 40 minutes for Section C, leaving 5 minutes for checking. When you practise a full paper, always write down your timings.

After completing a question, do not immediately look at the mark scheme. Instead, annotate your own answer: underline the key terms in the question, highlight where you have used evidence, and write a one-sentence summary of your argument. Then compare this to the examiner’s expectation. This habit trains you to become a self-aware writer.

  • Work backwards from the mark scheme: turn the band descriptors into a checklist. |

  • Reuse past paper extracts as mini practice questions, even if you have already answered them.

  • Read AQA examiner reports from previous years. They tell you the most common mistakes.

7. Analysing the 32-Mark Live Theatre Question | 解析C部分32分现场戏剧题

The 32-mark question in Section C is the biggest single task on the paper. It asks you to analyse and evaluate a live production you have seen. You must avoid retelling the plot. The examiner wants to see how a specific moment was created and why it affected the audience.

A reliable structure is the P.E.E.L structure. Point: state the theatrical moment you are writing about. Evidence: describe exactly what you saw or heard. Explanation: explain how the performer or designer used skills to create meaning. Link: link the effect back to the audience and to the overall
