The AQA GCSE English Language specification (8700) tests two things: how well you can read as a critic and write as a craftsperson. Every question on both papers maps to a clear set of assessment objectives. If you know those objectives, the mark scheme, and the question shapes, you can revise with precision instead of guessing.

1. Exam Overview | 考试概览

Students sit two equally weighted papers. Each paper lasts 1 hour 45 minutes, is worth 80 marks, and contributes exactly 50% of the final GCSE grade. Paper 1 focuses on fiction and creative writing; Paper 2 focuses on non-fiction and viewpoint writing. There is also a separate Spoken Language endorsement, reported as Pass, Merit or Distinction, which does not affect the GCSE grade.

On both papers, Section A is reading (40 marks) and Section B is writing (40 marks). The reading and writing halves are equal, so your revision time should be split equally between them.

A useful habit: before answering any reading question, silently name the AO being tested. This tells you whether to quote only (AO1), analyse methods (AO2), compare (AO3), or give a reasoned judgement (AO4).

Paper 1 Section A gives you one unseen fiction extract, usually 500-700 words. There are four questions, each with a different demand.

Question 5 presents two writing tasks: one descriptive writing based on a picture, and one narrative writing based on a title or opening line. You must choose only one. It is worth 40 marks: 24 for content and organisation (AO5), 16 for technical accuracy (AO6).

Descriptive writing: Do not write a story. Move like a camera lens from the wide scene, to a mid-distance detail, to a close-up micro-detail. Weave in all five senses, ambitious vocabulary and varied sentence lengths.

A top-band response typically uses 5-7 paragraphs, a range of punctuation (; : – …), sentence variety (simple, compound, complex, minor), and precise sensory language. Aim for 350-500 words in 45 minutes, leaving 5 minutes to check spelling and punctuation.

Paper 2 uses two non-fiction texts linked by theme, one from the 19th century and one from the 20th/21st century. The questions test different skills from Paper 1.
