Business size matters — not because bigger is always better, but because the scale of a business fundamentally changes how it operates, competes, and creates value. In the CIE A-Level Business syllabus, candidates must be able to measure business size, explain why firms grow, evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of large scale, and distinguish between internal and external growth strategies.

There is no single perfect way to measure the size of a business. Accountants, competitors, governments and investors may each use different indicators, and in examination answers the choice of method should be justified with reference to the industry being discussed.
