📚 CIE A-Level Hinduism: Breaking Through Key Difficulties in A2 | CIE A-Level

At A2 level, Cambridge candidates are no longer asked merely to recount sacred narratives or list philosophical terms. The assessment demands comparison, critical analysis and the ability to apply Hindu concepts to ethical and theological problems. The move from AS to A2 can therefore feel like a shift from learning the map to travelling through the terrain.

1. Brahman and Ātman: Monism vs Qualified Monism |

The first major difficulty is the relationship between Brahman, the ultimate reality, and ātman, the inner self. Many candidates describe Brahman simply as ‘God’, but Brahman is not a personal creator in the Upaniṣadic sense; it is the one, non-dual reality that underlies all existence. The key Upaniṣadic equation is that ātman is not merely part of Brahman, but identical with it.

This identity is expressed in the famous mahāvākya, or great saying, from the Chāndogya Upaniṣad: ‘Tat tvam asi’ (‘That thou art’). For Śaṅkara’s Advaita Vedānta, this means the individual self and Brahman are ultimately the same, and the apparent world of plurality is understood through māyā, the power of cosmic illusion or veiling.

A2 examiners often reward candidates who can contrast Advaita with Rāmānuja’s Viśiṣṭādvaita, or qualified non-dualism. Rāmānuja accepted that a real relationship exists between the self and Brahman: the soul remains distinct and dependent, even while sharing Brahman’s nature, much as the body is distinct from but wholly dependent upon the soul.

Brahma satyaṃ jagan mithyā, jīvo brahmaiva nāparaḥ

2. The Six Darśanas: Building a Comparative Framework |

A second obstacle is the need to see the six orthodox systems, or ṣaḍ-darśanas, as a family of possible answers rather than disconnected beliefs. These schools all accept the authority of the Veda, but they approach knowledge, self and liberation in very different ways.

Darśana Core Idea Exam Focus
Nyāya Logic and valid knowledge Pramāṇas; inference as evidence
Vaiśeṣika Atomic pluralism; categories of reality Padārthas; realist ontology
Sāṃkhya Dualism of puruṣa and prakṛti Spirit and matter; evolution of the world
Yoga Meditative discipline rooted in Sāṃkhya Eight limbs; citta-vṛtti-nirodha
Mīmāṃsā Vedic ritual exegesis Dharma as ritual duty; importance of action
Vedānta Upaniṣadic speculation on Brahman Advaita vs Viśiṣṭādvaita

When answering a question that asks about ‘the nature of liberation’, a strong A2 response should show which school is being assumed. Liberation in Yājñavalkya’s teaching may mean realisation of the self; in Mīmāṃsā it may mean freedom from the debt of ritual obligation. Always define your tradition before arguing.

3. Karma, Saṃsāra and Mokṣa: Mastering the Cycle |

The theory of karma is often reduced to a simple moral rule: good deeds bring good results. In the classical Hindu framework, however, karma is a subtle causal law that binds the ātman to saṃsāra, the cycle of death and rebirth, until discrimination and devotion destroy ignorance.

  • Sañcita karma: the storehouse of actions from past lives; sañcita
  • Prārabdha karma: the portion of past karma that has begun to bear fruit in the present life; prārabdha
  • Āgāmī karma: the new karma being produced by present choices; āgāmī 是现在行为正在创造的未来之业。

This threefold distinction matters because it explains why a liberated jīvanmukta, one who is freed while still alive, can continue to act without accumulating new bondage. A2 candidates should also be careful not to treat the ‘self’ as a Western immortal soul: the ātman is not created, and its transmigration is understood through the subtle body, which carries dispositions and tendencies into a new birth.

4. The Bhagavad Gītā: Three Yogas and One Vision |

The Gītā is central to A2 Hinduism, and its greatest challenge is understanding how karma, jñāna and bhakti can be presented as equally valid paths to liberation. Arjuna’s crisis is not simply about going to war; it is a crisis of dharma and identity. Kṛṣṇa’s answer is not a single formula but a graded teaching suited to different temperaments.

‘Yoga-sthaḥ kuru karmāṇi’ — established in yoga, perform action.

Examiners frequently ask whether the Gītā ultimately favours action over knowledge or devotion over action. A balanced answer should note that Kṛṣṇa tells Arjuna to act according to his sva-dharma, but to surrender the fruits of action to God. Thus nishkāma karma, selfless action, becomes a form of worship and a bridge between ethics and spirituality.

5. Varna, Āśrama and Dharma: Social Ethics in Context |

A common error in A2 essays is to treat ‘caste’ as one fixed system described identically in all texts. The classical texts speak of varṇa, the four social orders, and āśrama, the four stages of life. Together they form varṇāśrama-dharma, a framework in which a person’s duty depends on class, gender, age and capability.

The Gītā’s idea of sva-dharma is not a divine approval of discrimination. It is better understood as a principle of vocational and moral integrity: it is better to fail at one’s own duty than to succeed at another’s. However, because varṇa is inherited and linked to birth, it creates obvious ethical tensions with modern notions of equality.

For A2, the best responses recognise historical context: the Vedic picture is not the same as the dharma-śāstra picture, and neither is identical to modern jāti practice. Use the sources precisely, and avoid imposing modern judgement on ancient texts without explaining how the texts themselves change over time.

6. Upaniṣadic Hermeneutics: Neti Neti and the Inner Ruler |

The Upaniṣads deliberately avoid simple definitions of Brahman. Instead, they use dialogue, analogy, paradox and negation. One of the most important methods is neti neti, ‘not thus, not thus’, found in the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad. This negative method denies that Brahman can be captured by any finite description or image.

Another key idea is the antaryāmin, the ‘inner ruler’ or inner controller. This image presents Brahman as the immanent presence within all beings, yet also beyond them. The balance between transcendence and immanence is a frequent source of confusion in A2 answers.

A useful exam strategy is to treat Upaniṣadic statements as pedagogical, not propositional. The teacher does not simply transmit facts; the teacher provokes insight. When you quote an Upaniṣad in an essay, explain the method behind the statement and what it tries to prevent the listener from thinking.

7. Hindu Ethics: Ahiṃsā, Conflict and Applied Morality |

A2 ethics questions may ask whether Hinduism is fundamentally a religion of peace or a religion that permits war. Non-violence, ahiṃsā, is central to Jain and Buddhist ethics, and it becomes prominent in classical Hindu texts as well. But the Gītā explicitly endorses fighting in a just war as Arjuna’s duty.

Gandhi’s interpretation of the Gītā turns the battlefield into an allegory of the soul. For Gandhi, Kṛṣṇa’s teaching is about resisting evil within oneself, not about killing enemies. This hermeneutical flexibility shows that Hindu ethics is not static; it is always interpreted within particular historical struggles.

To score highly, do not choose simply between ‘peaceful’ and ‘violent’ Hinduism. Show how the same traditions generate moral debate, and apply the concepts to concrete dilemmas such as war, social justice and ecological responsibility.

8. Modern Hindu Movements: Reform, Revival and Identity |

The modern period brings another common difficulty: how to write about movements that are both responses to colonialism and authentic expressions of Hindu reform. The Brahmo Samāj, founded by Rammohun Roy in 1828, emphasised reason, monotheism and social reform. It rejected much ritual and idolatry as later distortions of the Vedic faith.

The Ārya Samāj, founded by Dayānanda Sarasvatī in 1875, also claimed to return to the Veda, but it was more aggressive in defending Hindu identity and in promoting reconversion. The contrast between these movements is a favourite exam target because it shows the diversity of modern Hindu thought.

A strong A2 answer should treat modern Hinduism as a continuation of older philosophical debates, not as a simple break with the past. Vivekananda, for example, reworked Advaita into a message of service and social uplift, showing that ancient metaphysics can be applied to modern problems.

9. Sacred Texts as Sources: Using Evidence in A2 Essays | 圣典作为文献:A2 论文中的证据运用

Many A2 candidates collect quotations but do not know how to use them. A quotation is not evidence unless it is explained and connected to the question. When citing the R̥g Veda or the Bhagavad Gītā, identify the context, the speaker and the intention. This is what examiners mean by ‘source analysis’.
