Exponential and logarithmic questions appear in almost every A2 paper. The core skill is to switch freely between the exponential form a = bⁿ and the logarithmic form n = log_b a. In A2 you normally work with the natural base e, so remember that d/dx(eˣ) = eˣ and d/dx(ln x) = 1/x.

  • Use the change-of-base formula: log_b a = ln a / ln b. This turns any logarithm into natural logarithms that calculators and calculus rules can handle.

  • When an equation has different bases, take natural logs of both sides first. For example, solve 3^(2x) = 4^(x+1).
