In this lesson, you will learn how to build a strong mathematical argument using definitions, evidence, and reasoning.

你是否曾在回答数学问题后听到老师问:”你怎么知道?”在几何中,尤其是在给图形分类时,仅仅给出正确答案是不够的——你还必须解释它为什么正确。在本课中,你将学习如何利用定义、证据和推理来构建一个有力的数学论证。

1. What Does It Mean to Construct an Argument? | 什么是构建论证?

A mathematical argument is a clear, logical explanation that uses facts to convince others that a statement is true. It is not a fight or an opinion. For example, if you say “This shape is a triangle,” your argument must show that the shape has exactly three straight sides and is a closed figure.

数学论证是一种清晰、合乎逻辑的解释,它利用事实让别人相信某个说法是正确的。它不是争吵,也不是个人意见。例如,如果你说”这个图形是三角形”,你的论证必须说明这个图形有且仅有三条直边,而且是一个封闭图形。

  • A claim is the statement you are trying to prove.

    主张(claim)是你试图证明的说法。

  • Evidence includes definitions, measurements, and observed properties.

    证据包括定义、测量结果和观察到的性质。

  • Reasoning is the sentence that connects the evidence to the claim.

    推理是把证据与主张联系起来的句子。


2. The Tools of a Strong Argument: Definitions | 有力论证的工具:定义

Definitions are the foundation of every geometric argument. A definition is a precise sentence that describes a shape exactly, with no extra or missing conditions.

定义是每一个几何论证的基础。定义是一个精确的句子,准确描述一个图形,不多一个条件,也不少一个条件。

Polygon
多边形
A closed plane figure made of line segments.
由线段围成的封闭平面图形。
Quadrilateral
四边形
A polygon with exactly four sides.
恰有四条边的多边形。
Right angle
直角
An angle that measures exactly 90°.
恰好等于90°的角。
Parallel lines
平行线
Lines that never meet and stay the same distance apart.
永不相交且始终保持相同距离的直线。

To use a definition, check every condition one by one. If all conditions are met, the name is correct; if one condition fails, the name is wrong.

要使用定义,就要一条一条地检查每个条件。如果所有条件都满足,名称就正确;只要有一个条件不满足,名称就错误。


3. Claim, Evidence, Reasoning | 主张、证据、推理

A complete argument can be written as one powerful sentence pattern: “I claim … because … and this means …”.

一个完整的论证可以写成一种有力的句式:”我主张……因为……而这意味着……”。

Claim + Evidence + Reasoning = A Strong Argument

主张 + 证据 + 推理 = 有力的论证

Example: “I claim this shape is a quadrilateral because it has exactly four straight sides, and a quadrilateral is a polygon with four sides.”

例如:”我主张这个图形是四边形,因为它恰好有四条直边
