Essential English Grammar Structures for Exam Success | 英语核心语法结构考点梳理

📚 Essential English Grammar Structures for Exam Success | 英语核心语法结构考点梳理

Mastering core grammar structures is the foundation of achieving top grades in English language exams. This guide systematically reviews the most frequently tested grammar points, from tense usage to complex sentence patterns, with clear explanations and authentic examples.

掌握核心语法结构是在英语考试中取得高分的基础。本指南系统梳理了最常考的语法考点,从时态用法到复杂句型,配以清晰的讲解和地道的例句,帮助考生逐项攻克。

1. Tense and Aspect System | 时态与体系统

The English tense system encodes both time (past, present, future) and aspect (simple, continuous, perfect, perfect continuous). Exam questions often test the distinction between the present perfect and the simple past, as well as the correct use of continuous forms for temporary situations.

英语时态系统同时编码时间(过去、现在、将来)和体(一般、进行、完成、完成进行)。考试中常考现在完成时与一般过去时的区分,以及进行体用于临时情况的用法。

Key distinction: The present perfect connects a past action to the present moment, while the simple past places the action entirely in the past. Use “since,” “for,” “already,” “yet,” and “just” with the present perfect.

关键区分:现在完成时将过去的动作与现在时刻相连接,而一般过去时将该动作完全置于过去。与现在完成时连用的标志词有“since”“for”“already”“yet”“just”。

Example: “She has lived in London for five years.” (She still lives there.) vs. “She lived in London for five years.” (She no longer lives there.)

例句:“她已经在伦敦住了五年。”(现在仍住在那里)对比“她曾在伦敦住过五年。”(现在已不住在那里)。

Present Perfect: have/has + past participle → connects past action to now
Simple Past: verb + -ed (regular) → completed action at a specific past time

2. Subject-Verb Agreement | 主谓一致

Subject-verb agreement requires the verb to match the number and person of the subject. Tricky cases include collective nouns, indefinite pronouns, and noun phrases with prepositional modifiers.

主谓一致要求动词在人称和数上与主语保持一致。容易出错的考点包括集合名词、不定代词以及带介词修饰语的名词短语。

  • Collective nouns (team, family, government): singular verb when viewed as one unit; plural verb when emphasizing individual members. British English accepts both: “The team is winning.” / “The team are arguing among themselves.”

集合名词(team、family、government):视为一个整体时用单数动词;强调个体成员时用复数动词。英式英语两者皆可:“The team is winning.”(团队正在获胜)/“The team are arguing among themselves.”(队员们彼此争论不休)。

  • Indefinite pronouns (everyone, somebody, nothing): always singular. “Everyone is responsible for their own work.”

不定代词(everyone、somebody、nothing):始终用单数。“Everyone is responsible for their own work.”(每个人对自己的工作负责。)

  • Phrases like “a number of” (plural) vs. “the number of” (singular): “A number of students are absent.” / “The number of students is increasing.”

“a number of”(复数)与“the number of”(单数)的区别:“A number of students are absent.”(一些学生缺席。)/“The number of students is increasing.”(学生人数在增加。)

3. Passive Voice and Its Uses | 被动语态及其用法

The passive voice is formed with “be + past participle.” It is used when the agent is unknown, irrelevant, or deliberately omitted. Exams frequently test the transformation between active and passive, including passives with modals and reporting verbs.

被动语态由“be + 过去分词”构成。当施动者未知、无关紧要或被有意省略时使用被动语态。考试常考主动与被动之间的转换,包括含情态动词和转述动词的被动结构。

Formation across tenses: The auxiliary “be” carries the tense, and the main verb remains in past participle form.

各时态的构成:助动词“be”承载时态变化,主动词保持过去分词形式。

Tense Active Passive
Present Simple They build houses. Houses are built.
Past Simple They built the house. The house was built.
Present Perfect They have built the house. The house has been built.
Future They will build the house. The house will be built.

Verbs with two objects (give, send, offer) can form two passive structures: “I was given a book.” / “A book was given to me.”

带双宾语的动词(give、send、offer)可以构成两种被动结构:“I was given a book.”(有人给了我一本书。)/“A book was given to me.”(一本书被给了我。)

4. Relative Clauses | 定语从句

Relative clauses provide essential information about a noun. Defining relative clauses identify the noun (no commas), while non-defining clauses add extra information (with commas). The choice of relative pronoun depends on the antecedent and its function in the clause.

定语从句为名词提供必要信息。限制性定语从句用来明确所指对象(不加逗号),非限制性定语从句补充额外信息(加逗号)。关系代词的选择取决于先行词及其在从句中的功能。

  • who / whom / whose: for people. “The teacher who taught me maths has retired.”

who / whom / whose:用于人。“The teacher who taught me maths has retired.”(教我数学的那位老师已经退休了。)

  • which: for things and animals. “The book which I borrowed was fascinating.”

    which:用于事物和动物。“The book which I borrowed was fascinating.”(我借的那本书非常引人入胜。)

  • that: can replace who/which in defining clauses only. “The car that crashed was red.”

that:仅在限制性定语从句中可替代who/which。“The car that crashed was red.”(出事的那辆车是红色的。)

  • whose: for possession. “The writer whose novel won the prize is here.”

whose:表示所属关系。“The writer whose novel won the prize is here.”(其小说获奖的那位作家在这里。)

Omitting the relative pronoun: In defining clauses, who/which/that can be omitted when they function as the object: “The film (that) we watched was brilliant.” Non-defining clauses never allow omission.

省略关系代词:在限制性定语从句中,当who/which/that充当宾语时可以省略:“The film (that) we watched was brilliant.”(我们看的那部电影很棒。)非限制性定语从句中不可省略。

5. Noun Clauses | 名词性从句

Noun clauses function as subjects, objects, or complements within a sentence. They are introduced by “that,” “whether/if,” or question words. A common exam trap is the difference between “that” clauses and “what” clauses.

名词性从句在句子中充当主语、宾语或表语。它们由“that”“whether/if”或疑问词引导。常见的考点陷阱是“that”从句与“what”从句的区别。

That vs. What: “That” introduces a complete statement; “what” means “the thing which” and carries meaning within the clause.

That 与 What:“that”引导一个完整的陈述;“what”意为“the thing which”,在从句中本身承载意义。

Example: “That she passed the exam surprised everyone.” (The fact itself surprised people.) vs. “What surprised everyone was her score.” (The thing that surprised people was the score.)

例句:“That she passed the exam surprised everyone.”(她通过考试这件事让大家吃惊。)对比“What surprised everyone was her score.”(让大家吃惊的是她的分数)。

Whether vs. If: In noun clauses serving as subjects, only “whether” is correct: “Whether we succeed depends on preparation.”

Whether 与 If:当名词性从句作主语时,只能用“whether”:“Whether we succeed depends on preparation.”(我们能否成功取决于准备。)

6. Adverbial Clauses | 状语从句

Adverbial clauses modify the main verb and answer questions such as when, why, how, and under what condition. Each type has its own set of conjunctions, and exam questions often test the precise meaning carried by each connector.

状语从句修饰主句动词,回答何时、为何、如何以及在什么条件下等问题。每种类型有其自身的连接词,考试常考每个连接词所承载的精确含义。

Type Common Conjunctions Example
Time when, while, as soon as, until Call me when you arrive.
Reason because, since, as She left because she was tired.
Condition if, unless, provided that You will pass if you study.
Concession although, even though, whereas Although it rained, we went out.
Purpose so that, in order that He spoke loudly so that all could hear.

Unless vs. If not: “Unless” already carries a negative meaning: “Unless you hurry, you will miss the train” equals “If you do not hurry, you will miss the train.”

Unless 与 If not:“unless”本身已含否定意义:“Unless you hurry, you will miss the train.”等同于“If you do not hurry, you will miss the train.”(如果你不快点,就会错过火车。)

7. Non-Finite Verbs: Gerunds, Infinitives, and Participles | 非谓语动词:动名词、不定式和分词

Non-finite verbs do not act as the main verb of a sentence. Gerunds (verb-ing as nouns), infinitives (to + verb), and participles (verb-ing / past participle as adjectives) have distinct functions. Certain verbs and expressions require a specific non-finite form after them.

非谓语动词不作句子的主要谓语。动名词(动词-ing形式作名词)、不定式(to + 动词原形)和分词(动词-ing形式/过去分词作形容词)各有其功能。某些动词和表达后必须接特定的非谓语形式。

  • Verbs followed by gerund: enjoy, avoid, consider, finish, suggest, mind. “She avoided making eye contact.”

    后接动名词的动词:enjoy、avoid、consider、finish、suggest、mind。“She avoided making eye contact.”(她避免目光接触。)

  • Verbs followed by infinitive: want, decide, hope, plan, refuse, promise. “They decided to postpone the trip.”

后接不定式的动词:want、decide、hope、plan、refuse、promise。“They decided to postpone the trip.”(他们决定推迟行程。)

  • Verbs followed by both with a change of meaning: remember, forget, stop, try, regret.

    后接两者且意义改变:remember、forget、stop、try、regret。

“Remember doing” = recall a past action
“Remember to do” = not forget a future duty

Compare: “I remember locking the door.” (memory of a past event) / “I remembered to lock the door.” (I did not forget to do it.)

比较:“I remember locking the door.”(我记得锁过门,记忆过去的事件。)/“I remembered to lock the door.”(我没有忘记锁门。)

8. Subjunctive and Hypothetical Structures | 虚拟语气与假设结构

Hypothetical structures express wishes, conditions contrary to fact, and imagined situations. The “second conditional” (unreal present), the “third conditional” (unreal past), and mixed conditionals are key exam areas. The subjunctive form (the base verb) appears after certain verbs and expressions of importance.

假设结构表达愿望、与事实相反的条件以及想象的情境。“第二条件句”(非真实现在)、“第三条件句”(非真实过去)以及混合条件句是考试的重点区域。虚拟式(动词原形)出现在某些表示重要性的动词和表达之后。

  • Second conditional: If + past simple, would + base verb. “If I won the lottery, I would travel the world.”

    第二条件句:If + 一般过去时,would + 动词原形。“If I won the lottery, I would travel the world.”(如果我中彩票,我会环游世界。)

  • Third conditional: If + past perfect, would have + past participle. “If she had studied harder, she would have passed.”

    第三条件句:If + 过去完成时,would have + 过去分词。“If she had studied harder, she would have passed.”(如果她学习更努力,她就已经及格了。)

  • Mixed conditional: past condition + present result. “If he had taken the medicine, he would not be ill now.”

混合条件句:过去条件 + 现在结果。“If he had taken the medicine, he would not be ill now.”(如果他当时吃了药,现在就不会生病。)

  • Subjunctive after “recommend/suggest/essential”: “The doctor recommended that she rest.” (not “rests”)

“recommend/suggest/essential”后的虚拟式:“The doctor recommended that she rest.”(医生建议她休息。)注意用rest而非rests。

Wish structures: “I wish I knew the answer.” (present unreal) / “I wish I had known the answer.” (past unreal)

Wish结构:“I wish I knew the answer.”(我希望我知道答案,现在非真实。)/“I wish I had known the answer.”(我希望我当时知道答案,过去非真实。)

9. Inversion after Negative or Restrictive Adverbials | 否定或限制性状语后的倒装

Inversion (placing the auxiliary before the subject) occurs after negative adverbials and “only” expressions at the beginning of a sentence. This is a stylistic device common in formal writing and a frequent exam focus.

在否定状语和“only”结构位于句首时会发生倒装(将助动词置于主语之前)。这是正式写作中常见的修辞手段,也是考试的高频考点。

Negative adverbial + auxiliary + subject + main verb

Example transformations:

示例转换:

  • “I have never seen such a beautiful sunset.” → “Never have I seen such a beautiful sunset.”

“I have never seen such a beautiful sunset.”(我从未见过如此美丽的日落。)→ “Never have I seen such a beautiful sunset.”

  • “She not only writes novels, but she also paints.” → “Not only does she write novels, but she also paints.”

“She not only writes novels, but she also paints.”(她不仅写小说,还画画。)→ “Not only does she write novels, but she also paints.”

  • “The matter became clear only after further investigation.” → “Only after further investigation did the matter become clear.”

“The matter became clear only after further investigation.”(这件事在进一步调查后才变得清晰。)→ “Only after further investigation did the matter become clear.”

Important restriction: Inversion does not occur when “only” modifies the subject: “Only John came to the meeting.” (No inversion needed.)

重要限制:当“only”修饰主语时不倒装:“Only John came to the meeting.”(只有约翰来开会了,无需倒装。)

10. Emphatic Structures: Cleft Sentences and Fronting | 强调结构:分裂句与前置

Cleft sentences break one simple sentence into two clauses to emphasise a specific element. The “it-cleft” and the “wh-cleft” are the two major patterns. Fronting moves a normally later element to the beginning for emphasis or textual cohesion.

分裂句将一个简单句拆分为两个分句,以强调特定成分。“it-分裂句”和“wh-分裂句”是两种主要结构。前置则把通常位于后面的成分移至句首,起强调或衔接语篇的作用。

It-cleft: It + be + emphasised element + relative clause.

It-分裂句:It + be + 被强调成分 + 关系从句。

Example: “Tom broke the vase yesterday.” → “It was Tom who broke the vase yesterday.” (focus on Tom)

示例:“Tom broke the vase yesterday.”(汤姆昨天打碎了花瓶。)→ “It was Tom who broke the vase yesterday.”(昨天打碎花瓶的是汤姆。)强调汤姆。

Wh-cleft: What + clause + be + focus. “What Tom broke yesterday was the vase.” (focus on the vase)

Wh-分裂句:What + 从句 + be + 焦点。“What Tom broke yesterday was the vase.”(汤姆昨天打碎的是那个花瓶。)强调花瓶。

Fronting: “The money he hid, and the truth he kept from everyone.” The object “the money” and “the truth” are moved to the front for dramatic effect.

前置:“The money he hid, and the truth he kept from everyone.”(钱他藏了起来,真相他对所有人隐瞒。)宾语“the money”和“the truth”移至句首,产生戏剧性效果。
