TOEFL Writing New Format: Strategies and Key Preparation Points | 托福写作新题型:解题思路与备考要点

📚 TOEFL Writing New Format: Strategies and Key Preparation Points | 托福写作新题型:解题思路与备考要点

The TOEFL iBT Writing section now contains two tasks: Integrated Writing and Academic Discussion. The new format shortens the timed essay and places greater emphasis on responding to an academic discussion with a clear position, relevant reasons, and appropriate examples. Many test takers must update their preparation because the old template-heavy approach is no longer recommended.

新版托福写作包含两个任务:综合写作和学术讨论写作。新题型缩短了写作时间,更强调在课堂讨论语境中给出明确立场、相关理由和恰当例证的能力。很多考生需要更新备考思路,因为过去过度依赖模板的写法已经不再适用。

1. Understanding the New TOEFL Writing Section | 理解托福写作新题型

The Integrated Writing task has remained a core part of the Writing section. In this task, you read a short academic passage, listen to a lecture on the same topic, and then write a summary of how the lecture relates to the reading. You have about 20 minutes for this response.

综合写作仍然是写作部分的核心任务。在这一任务中,你需要先阅读一篇较短的学术文章,再听一段同一主题的讲座,然后用约20分钟写出讲座内容与阅读材料之间关系的摘要。

The Academic Discussion task is the replacement for the former Independent Writing task. You read a professor’s discussion question and two student responses, then write your own post of at least 100 words in 10 minutes. The setting is an online classroom forum.

学术讨论写作取代了原来的独立写作任务。你会读到教授提出的讨论问题和两名学生的回复,然后在10分钟内写出至少100词的个人回帖。场景设定为在线课堂讨论区。

Your final Writing score is based on how well you perform on both tasks. The final score is converted to the familiar 0-30 scale, so both tasks deserve careful preparation.

写作部分的最终成绩由两项任务的表现共同决定,并会转换为大家熟悉的0-30分制,因此两项任务都需要认真准备。

2. Task 1: Integrated Writing Essential Skills | 综合写作核心技能

In Integrated Writing, you must show that you understand the relationship between the reading and the lecture. Usually the lecture challenges or qualifies the reading, but every task is slightly different. Your job is to present the main idea of each source and to connect them clearly.

在综合写作中,你需要展示自己理解阅读材料与讲座之间的关系。通常情况下,讲座会质疑或修正阅读内容,但每次题目略有不同。你的任务是呈现两种材料的主要观点,并清晰地把它们联系起来。

Paraphrasing is an essential skill. Do not copy long phrases from the reading or the lecture. Instead, use your own words to restate key ideas, and keep your response focused on the most important points.

改写是一项核心技能。不要大段抄写阅读或听力中的原文,而应用自己的话复述关键信息,并让回答紧扣最重要的观点。

You do not need to give your own opinion in Integrated Writing. The task tests comprehension and accurate summarization, not personal judgment. If you add personal opinions, you may lose focus and risk lowering your score.

综合写作不需要发表个人意见。该任务考查的是理解能力和准确概括能力,而不是个人判断。如果加入个人看法,很容易偏离重点,甚至影响分数。

3. Task 2: Academic Discussion Basic Structure | 学术讨论写作基本结构

The Academic Discussion task asks you to write a forum post that contributes to the conversation. You should clearly state whether you agree or disagree with the professor or with one of the students, and you should give reasons that are specific and logical.

学术讨论任务要求你写一条能推动对话发展的论坛回帖。你应该清楚说明自己是同意还是不同意教授或某位同学的观点,并给出具体且有逻辑的理由。

A useful structure is very simple: first state your own position, then give a reason, then add an example or detail, and finally connect your point to the discussion. This structure works well within the 10-minute time limit.

一个有效的结构其实很简单:先表明立场,再给出理由,然后补充例子或细节,最后将自己的观点与讨论联系起来。这种结构在10分钟限时内非常实用。

Position + Reason + Support + Connection = Effective Discussion Post

Your post should be about 100 to 130 words. Writing more is not automatically better, especially when you have limited time. A focused post with one strong idea is better than a long post with several weak ideas.

回帖字数应控制在100到130词左右。并非写得越长越好,尤其在时间有限的情况下。一条聚焦、有强有力观点的帖子,通常好过一条包含多个薄弱观点的长帖。

4. Key Differences from the Old Independent Task | 新旧题型主要区别

Many students still prepare for TOEFL Writing as if it were the old Independent Writing task. That mistake can lead to wasted time and poor results. The new task is shorter, more interactive, and more focused on discussion skills.

许多学生仍按照旧的独立写作来备考,这会浪费时间并导致成绩不理想。新任务篇幅更短、互动性更强,也更注重讨论能力。

Feature Old Independent Task New Academic Discussion
Time 30 minutes 10 minutes
Length At least 300 words At least 100 words
Context Stand-alone essay prompt Online classroom forum
Other voices None Professor plus two students
Core skill Extended argumentation Short, relevant discussion response

The table above shows why your writing strategy must change. The new task rewards concise, direct, and conversational-academic writing rather than long introductions and memorized conclusions.

上表说明写作策略必须改变。新任务更看重简洁、直接、兼具学术感和口语感的文字,而不是冗长的开头和背好的结尾。

5. Reading and Note-Taking Strategy | 阅读与笔记策略

In Integrated Writing, the reading passage will appear on your screen for about three minutes. Use this time to identify the main claim and the supporting points. Most academic passages present one central argument and two or three supporting reasons.

在综合写作中,阅读文章会在屏幕上显示约三分钟。利用这段时间找出主要观点和支持论点。大多数学术文章都会提出一个中心论点,并附带两到三个支持理由。

A strong note-taking system uses abbreviations and short phrases. For example, you can write “main: urban farming benefits” and “1: local food” and “2: education” and “3: environment.” These short notes help you listen to the lecture without losing the reading’s structure.

好的笔记系统会使用缩写和短词组。例如,你可以写“主旨:城市农业好处”以及“1:本地食物”“2:教育意义”“3:环境影响”。这些简短笔记能帮助你在听讲座时不丢失阅读文章的结构。

Do not try to write full sentences in your notes. Instead, focus on key nouns, verbs, and relationship words such as “because,” “but,” and “therefore.” This will make your final response clearer and faster to write.

不要在笔记中写完整句子。重点记录关键词、动词以及“因为”“但是”“因此”等关系词,这样写正式回答时会更快、更清晰。

6. Listening and Note-Taking Strategy | 听力与笔记策略

The lecture in Integrated Writing usually lasts two to three minutes. You need to recognize the lecturer’s overall attitude toward the reading. The lecturer may disagree with the reading, or may support and refine it. Identifying the relationship is the first and most important listening goal.

综合写作中的讲座通常持续两到三分钟。你需要辨认主讲人对阅读材料的态度。主讲人可能反对阅读内容,也可能支持并加以完善。识别这种关系是听力中最重要的一步。

After you identify the general position, listen for each point that relates to the reading. In most samples, the lecturer gives three main points that directly answer the three points in the reading. Write each listening point beside the matching reading point.

在确定整体态度后,要注意听与阅读内容对应的各个要点。在多数样题中,主讲人会用三点内容直接回应阅读中的三个要点。你应把每个听力要点记在相应阅读点的旁边。

Use a simple numbering system: reading point 1 on the left, lecture response 1 on the right. This side-by-side format makes it easy to organize your final answer without losing time.

使用简单的编号方式:左侧写阅读要点1,右侧写讲座回应1。这种并列式笔记会让你在组织最终答案时事半功倍。

7. How to Organize the Integrated Response | 综合写作的段落组织

Your Integrated Writing response should begin with one short introductory sentence. Mention the topic and explain that the lecture casts doubt on, supports, or qualifies the reading. A good example is: “The lecture challenges the reading’s claim about the benefits of the project.”

综合写作的回答通常以一个简短开头句开始。点明主题,并说明讲座对阅读内容提出质疑、表示支持,或进行了修正。例如:“讲座对阅读文章中关于该项目好处的观点提出了质疑。”

The body should contain one paragraph per major point. In each paragraph, state the reading’s point, then state the lecture’s response, and then explain the contrast or agreement. This point-by-point structure is clear and effective.

正文应按要点逐段展开。每一段先说明阅读观点,再说明讲座回应,然后解释二者的对比或一致关系。这种逐点对应结构清晰且有效。

Do not include a personal opinion or a long conclusion. A short final sentence is acceptable, but a new argument will only hurt your task fulfillment score.

不要加入个人意见,也不要写冗长的结论。可以用一句简短的话收尾,但新增论证只会影响你的任务完成度得分。

8. How to Write a Strong Academic Discussion Post | 如何写好学术讨论回帖

Your Academic Discussion post should open by responding to someone in the conversation. For example, you can say: “I agree with Sarah that online learning is convenient, but I think flexibility also creates problems.” This shows that you have read the discussion carefully.

学术讨论回帖应当先回应对话中的某个人。例如:“我同意Sarah提出的在线学习很方便,但我认为灵活性也会带来问题。”这样能证明你仔细阅读了整场讨论。

State your opinion clearly in the first or second sentence. Because you only have 10 minutes, do not hide your position inside a long introduction. A direct statement such as “In my view, the main advantage is …” is ideal.

在第一或第二句中就要清楚表达观点。由于只有10分钟,不要把自己的立场藏在冗长的开头中。直接说“在我看来,主要优势是……”最为理想。

Use one specific reason and one brief example to support your position. The example can come from your own experience, from history, from science, or from current events. It must be relevant and easy to follow.

用一个具体理由和一个简短例子支持观点。例子可以来自个人经历、历史、科学或时事,但必须扣题且容易理解。

Finally, try to connect your post to the classmate you mention. This can be as simple as saying: “This is why I disagree with Maria’s conclusion.” This final connection makes your post feel natural in a forum setting.

最后,尽量将自己的帖子与你提到的同学联系起来。你可以简单地说:“这就是我不同意Maria结论的原因。”这种收尾会让帖子在论坛情景中显得自然。

9. Sentence Patterns and Transition Devices | 句型与过渡手段

Clear transitions improve both writing tasks. Useful phrases include “in contrast,” “for example,” “because of this,” and “as a result.” These words help the reader follow your logic without confusion.

清晰的过渡词可以提升两项写作任务的质量。常用表达包括“相比之下”“例如”“因此”“结果”。这些词语能帮助读者毫不费力地跟上你的逻辑。

Do not overuse memorized phrases. The old “firstly, secondly, thirdly” pattern can feel mechanical. Instead, vary your transitions and let the content guide the structure.

不要过度使用背好的套话。过去那种“第一、第二、第三”的写法可能显得机械。你应该让过渡方式更多变,并让内容决定结构。

Sentence variety also matters. Use simple sentences for key claims, complex sentences for cause and effect, and conditional sentences for hypothetical examples. This demonstrates grammatical range without sacrificing clarity.

句式变化也很重要。用简单句陈述关键观点,用复合句表达因果关系,用条件句呈现假设例子。这样既能展示语法多样性,又不牺牲清晰度。

10. Common Mistakes to Avoid | 常见错误与避免方法

The first common mistake is copying the reading or the professor’s prompt. ETS raters can identify direct copying, and long copied phrases lower your score. Always paraphrase in your own words.

第一个常见错误是抄写阅读材料或教授原题。考官能识别直接复制的内容,大段抄写会拉低分数。请务必用自己的语言改写。

The second common mistake is ignoring the listening material in Integrated Writing. If your answer only summarizes the reading, or only summarizes the lecture, you have not completed the task. You must show the relationship between the two.

第二个常见错误是忽略综合写作中的听力内容。如果回答只概括阅读或只概括听力,就说明你没有完成任务。你必须展示二者之间的关系。

The third common mistake is writing an irrelevant discussion post. For example, if the professor asks about remote work, your post must answer that specific question. A memorized opinion about technology in general will feel vague and may receive a low score.

第三个常见错误是写出与讨论无关的回帖。例如,教授问的是远程办公,那你的帖子就必须围绕这一问题展开。背好的“泛泛而谈科技”内容会显得空洞,分数也可能偏低。

Other mistakes include using overly casual language, writing fewer than 100 words, and spending too much time planning in the Academic Discussion task. In a 10-minute task, one minute of planning is enough.

其他常见问题包括语言过于随意、字数不足100词,以及在学术讨论任务中花太多时间构思。在10分钟的限时任务中,留出1分钟规划已经足够。

11. A Practical Preparation Plan | 实用备考计划

If you have four weeks before the test, divide your time into three phases. In the first week, focus on understanding the task types and building note-taking skills. Do at least one Integrated Writing task and one Academic Discussion task to establish a baseline.

如果考前还有四周,你可以把时间分成三个阶段。第一周专注理解题型和训练笔记能力。至少完成一次综合写作和一次学术讨论写作,以此建立基准水平。

In weeks two and three, practice timed responses and analyze every sample answer. For Integrated Writing, compare your summary with the reading and lecture notes. For Academic Discussion, check whether your position is clear, your reason is relevant, and your example is specific.

在第二周和第三周,进行限时练习并分析每篇样例。对综合写作,将你的摘要与阅读和听力笔记进行对照;对学术讨论,检查立场是否明确、理由是否扣题、例子是否具体。

In the final week, take a complete mock test and review your typed responses. Focus on error patterns such as verb tense, articles, word choice, and spelling. These small improvements can raise your score substantially.

在最后一周,进行完整模考并检查自己的打字文本。重点关注动词时态、冠词、词汇选择和拼写错误。这些细节改进能显著提升分数。

Do not ignore typing speed. Because both tasks are timed, faster typing gives you more time to think and revise. Practice typing your essays on a standard QWERTY keyboard.

不要忽视打字速度。由于两项任务都限时,打字更快意味着你有更多时间去思考和修改。请使用标准QWERTY键盘练习输入文章。

12. Final Checklist for Test Day | 考前最终检查清单

Before the test, make sure you know the exact order of the Writing section. In the integrated task, listen actively and take clear notes. In the academic discussion task, answer the professor’s question directly and respond to another student’s idea.

考试前,确保你清楚写作部分的任务顺序。在综合任务中,要主动听并记好笔记;在学术讨论任务中,要直接回答教授的问题,并回应某位学生的观点。

During the last few minutes of each response, check for obvious grammar errors and missing words. You do not need a perfect essay, but clear and understandable writing is essential.

在每项任务最后几分钟,检查明显语法错误和漏词。你不需要写出完美文章,但清晰可懂是基本要求。

Finally, trust the structure you practiced. Use short introductions, clear body paragraphs, and direct sentences. Stay calm, read the prompt carefully, and show the examiner that you can communicate effectively in academic English.

最后,相信你在练习中形成的结构。使用简短开头、清晰正文和直接句式。保持冷静,认真读题,让考官看到你能用学术英语进行有效沟通。
