1. Definition and Electron Configuration | 定义与电子构型

In IB Chemistry, a transition element is defined as an element that forms at least one stable ion with a partially filled d subshell. This definition excludes scandium (Sc³⁺ is d⁰) and zinc (Zn²⁺ is d¹⁰).

Transition elements are located in the d-block of the periodic table, between the s-block and p-block. Their typical 3d examples include titanium (Ti), vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), and copper (Cu).

You must remember the exceptions in electron configuration:
