Uniformly Accelerated Rectilinear Motion Formulas (Part 1) |

📚 Uniformly Accelerated Rectilinear Motion Formulas (Part 1) |

In A-Level Mathematics, the study of kinematics often begins with uniformly accelerated rectilinear motion. This article introduces the essential formulas known collectively as the SUVAT equations, which model an object moving in a straight line with constant acceleration. We will explain each equation, derive them graphically, and show how to apply them with confidence.

1. Defining Uniformly Accelerated Rectilinear Motion |

Uniformly accelerated rectilinear motion occurs when an object moves along a fixed straight line and its acceleration remains constant in both magnitude and direction. As a result, the velocity changes by the same amount in every equal interval of time. This idealised model is a fundamental building block of mechanics and is frequently tested at A-Level.

In practice, many real-world situations, such as a car accelerating along a straight road with constant engine power, can be approximated as uniform acceleration over short distances. Even when resistance forces exist, the SUVAT equations remain a powerful first approximation.

2. Notation and Units |
