📚 AP Microeconomics Key Concepts Review (Part 1) | AP
This article provides a structured walkthrough of the essential topics in the first half of the AP Microeconomics curriculum, from scarcity to consumer choice. Each section pairs an English explanation with its Chinese equivalent to reinforce understanding for bilingual learners.
1. Scarcity and Opportunity Cost |
Scarcity means that society’s resources are limited while human wants are unlimited, forcing us to make choices. Every decision has an opportunity cost: the value of the next best alternative forgone.
For example, if a student spends an hour studying economics instead of working a part-time job paying $15, the opportunity cost of that study hour is the $15 income lost, plus the value of any other activity given up.
Rational decision-making involves comparing marginal benefits with marginal costs, not total benefits and costs. Economic reasoning focuses on changes at the margin.
2. Production Possibilities Curve (PPC) |
The PPC illustrates the maximum combinations of two goods an economy can produce with given resources and technology. Points on the curve represent productive efficiency; points inside show underutilization.
The slope of the PPC is the marginal rate of transformation (MRT), reflecting the opportunity cost of one good in terms of the other. A concave PPC indicates increasing opportunity costs, while a straight-line PPC implies constant opportunity costs.
Economic growth, caused by more resources or better technology, shifts the entire PPC outward. A change that only benefits one sector rotates the curve outward on one axis.
3. Comparative Advantage and Gains from Trade |
Absolute advantage refers to the ability to produce more of a good with the same inputs. Comparative advantage, however, is the ability to produce a good at a lower opportunity cost than others, which is the true basis for trade.
To determine comparative advantage, calculate opportunity costs for each producer. The producer with the lower opportunity cost for a good should specialize in it. Terms of trade must lie between the two producers’ opportunity costs for mutual gains.
Specialization and trade allow economies to consume beyond their own PPCs, demonstrating that interdependence raises overall welfare.
4. Demand | 需求
The law of demand states that, ceteris paribus, as the price of a good rises, the quantity demanded falls. This inverse relationship is shown as a downward-sloping demand curve.
A change in price causes a movement along the curve (change in quantity demanded). Shifts of the entire demand curve arise from non-price determinants: income, tastes, prices of related goods, expectations, number of buyers, etc.
Normal goods see demand rise with income; inferior goods see demand fall as income increases. Substitutes and complements also affect how a price change in one good influences demand for another.
5. Supply | 供给
The law of supply indicates a positive relationship between price and quantity supplied: as price increases, producers are willing to offer more. The supply curve slopes upward.
Shifts in the supply curve are triggered by changes in input prices, technology, expectations, government policies (taxes, subsidies), and the number of sellers. A movement along the curve occurs only when the good’s own price changes.
For instance, a reduction in the cost of raw materials shifts the supply curve to the right, meaning more is supplied at every price level.
6. Market Equilibrium and Price Mechanism |
Equilibrium occurs where quantity demanded equals quantity supplied. At the equilibrium price, there is no surplus or shortage, and the market clears.
When price is above equilibrium, a surplus pushes price down. When price is below equilibrium, a shortage pushes price up. This self-correcting process is the invisible hand at work.
Changes in demand or supply will alter equilibrium price and quantity. Analyzing these comparative statics requires examining how both curves shift and the net effect on P and Q.
7. Elasticity | 弹性
Elasticity measures the responsiveness of one variable to a change in another. The most common is price elasticity of demand (PED):
PED = |(%Δ Quantity Demanded) / (%Δ Price)|
Using the midpoint formula to avoid different results depending on direction:
PED = |(ΔQ / Average Q) / (ΔP / Average P)|
| PED > 1 | Elastic: quantity is very responsive to price changes. | |
| PED < 1 | Inelastic: quantity is not very responsive. | |
| PED = 1 | Unit elastic: % change in quantity equals % change in price. | |
Other important elasticities include price elasticity of supply (PES), cross-price elasticity (XED) which identifies substitutes and complements, and income elasticity (YED) indicating normal vs inferior goods.
Total revenue test: if demand is elastic, a price decrease raises total revenue; if inelastic, a price decrease lowers total revenue.
8. Consumer Surplus and Producer Surplus |
Consumer surplus is the difference between what consumers are willing to pay and what they actually pay; it is the area below the demand curve and above the market price. Producer surplus is the difference between the market price and the minimum price producers are willing to accept; it is the area above the supply curve and below the price.
Total welfare in a market is the sum of consumer and producer surplus. At competitive equilibrium, total surplus is maximized, achieving allocative efficiency.
Deadweight loss (DWL) occurs when there is under- or over-production, often caused by price controls, taxes, or market power, representing lost welfare.
9. Government Interventions: Price Controls and Taxes |
A price ceiling is a legal maximum price set below equilibrium, leading to a persistent shortage. Rent control is a classic example. A price floor, set above equilibrium, creates a surplus, such as agricultural price supports or minimum wage.
Both price ceilings and floors generate deadweight loss, reduce total surplus, and often encourage black markets or non-price rationing.
Taxes: an excise tax shifts the supply curve upward by the amount of the tax. The burden (tax incidence) is shared between consumers and producers depending on the relative elasticities. Whichever side is more inelastic bears a larger share.
Taxes also create a deadweight loss because they reduce the quantity traded below the efficient level. A per-unit subsidy has the opposite effect, shifting supply downward and increasing quantity, but also creating DWL through overproduction.
10. Consumer Choice Theory (Utility Maximization) |
Consumers aim to maximize total utility given a budget constraint. The utility-maximizing rule states that the last dollar spent on each good must yield the same marginal utility per dollar:
MUₓ/Pₓ = MUᵧ/Pᵧ
Where MU is marginal utility and P is price. When this condition is not met, the consumer can reallocate spending to increase total utility.
The law of diminishing marginal utility explains why the demand curve slopes downward: as more of a good is consumed, the additional satisfaction declines, so consumers will only buy more if price falls.
Indifference curves and budget lines provide a graphical representation of consumer choice. The optimal consumption bundle is where the budget line is tangent to the highest attainable indifference curve (MRS = price ratio). However, basic AP problems often rely on the marginal utility per dollar approach.
