Practical work is at the heart of Year 7 CCEA Science. It helps you develop essential skills such as observing, measuring, recording and drawing conclusions. In your assessments, you will be tested not only on what you know but also on how well you can plan, carry out and evaluate a simple investigation.

10. Evaluating the Experiment | 评估实验

Evaluation is not about saying ‘the experiment went wrong’. Instead, you reflect on how reliable your results are and how the method could be made more accurate or precise.

Identify specific weaknesses, such as ‘the temperature reading might have been inaccurate because the thermometer was taken out of the water to read’, and then propose a realistic improvement, like ‘use a data logger with a temperature probe so readings are taken continuously without removing it from the liquid’.

11. Common Mistakes to Avoid | 常见错误避免

Forgetting to include units or writing them inside the results table instead of in the column heading is one of the most frequent errors. Always double-check every number for its correct unit.

Starting the y-axis scale from zero when all your data is clustered between 50 and 60 forces your plotted points into a small area. Instead, begin the axis just below your lowest value to spread the data and reveal trends clearly.

Using the wrong type of graph, such as a line graph for non-numerical categories, can lose all the marks for the graph presentation section. Check whether your independent variable is continuous or categoric before you decide.

When asked to plan an investigation, always identify the independent, dependent and at least two control variables before writing the step-by-step method. State how you will ensure safety and which equipment you will use.
