1. Pinyin and Tones | 拼音与声调

Pinyin is the foundation of spoken Chinese. It uses 26 letters to represent the sounds of standard Mandarin. A syllable is usually made up of an initial (consonant), a final (vowel or vowel cluster) and a tone mark. Mastering pinyin makes it much easier to look up words in a dictionary and type Chinese characters on a device.

拼音是中文口语的基础。它使用 26 个字母表示普通话的发音。一个音节通常由声母(辅音)、韵母(元音或元音组合)和声调符号组成。掌握拼音能让你更轻松地查字典和在设备上打字。

There are four basic tones plus a neutral tone. Pay close attention to the tone marks, as they completely change the meaning of a word. For example, the syllable ‘ma’ can mean mother (mā), hemp (má), horse (mǎ) or scold (mà) depending on the tone.

普通话有四个基本声调和一个轻声。要特别注意声调符号,因为它们会完全改变一个词的意思。例如,音节 ‘ma’ 根据声调不同可以表示“妈”(mā)、“麻”(má)、“马”(mǎ) 或“骂”(mà)。

Tone Description Example (ma)
1st tone high-level mā (mother)
2nd tone rising má (hemp)
3rd tone falling-rising mǎ (horse)
4th tone falling mà (scold)
neutral light and short ma (question particle)

2. Greetings and Basic Expressions | 问候语与基本表达

Being able to greet people and use polite expressions is the first step in communicating in Chinese. The most common greetings depend on the time of day. ‘Nǐ hǎo’ is the universal hello, and ‘zài jiàn’ means goodbye. Using appropriate titles such as ‘lǎoshī’ (teacher) shows respect.

能够问候他人并使用礼貌表达是中文交流的第一步。最常见的问候语会根据时间有所不同。“你好”是通用的打招呼方式,“再见”表示道别。使用恰当的称呼,如“老师”,能体现尊重。

  • Hello – Nǐ hǎo / 你好
  • Good morning – Zǎo shang hǎo / 早上好
  • Goodbye – Zài jiàn / 再见
  • Thank you – Xiè xie / 谢谢
  • You’re welcome – Bú kè qì / 不客气
  • Sorry – Duì bu qǐ / 对不起
  • What is your name? – Nǐ jiào shén me míng zi? / 你叫什么名字?
  • My name is … – Wǒ jiào … / 我叫……

Practice saying these phrases aloud, paying careful attention to tone changes. For instance, ‘bú kè qì’ often has a natural tone shift where ‘bú’ becomes a second tone before a fourth tone. This is the tone sandhi rule.

大声练习这些短语,注意声调变化。例如,“不客气”中的“不”在第四声前通常变为第二声,这是变调规则。

3. Numbers, Dates and Time | 数字、日期与时间

Numbers 0 to 100 form the backbone for telling time, stating dates and handling money. Chinese numbers are very regular once you know 1–10, as higher numbers combine these digits with place words like ‘shí’ (ten) and ‘bǎi’ (hundred). The number two has two forms: ‘èr’ and ‘liǎng’; ‘liǎng’ is used before measure words.

数字0到100是表达时间、日期和金钱的基础。一旦掌握1到10,中文数字就很有规律,因为更大的数字是由这些数字加上位词如“十”和“百”组合而成。数字二有两种说法:“èr”和“liǎng”;“liǎng”用于量词前。

Number Pinyin Chinese
1
2 èr / liǎng 二 / 两
10 shí
25 èr shí wǔ 二十五
100 yì bǎi 一百

To tell the date, use the pattern: year + month + day. Months are simply the number plus ‘yuè’ (month), and days are the number plus ‘hào’ or ‘rì’. Time on the clock uses ‘diǎn’ for o’clock and ‘fēn’ for minutes.

表示日期使用顺序:年 + 月 + 日。月份就是数字加“月”,日期是数字加“号”或“日”。时间用“点”表示整点,“分”表示分钟。

jīn tiān shì èr líng èr wǔ nián sān yuè shí hào

Today is 2025 March 10th. / 今天是2025年3月10号。

4. Family and Personal Descriptions | 家庭与个人描述

Talking about your family uses possessive structure ‘wǒ de’ (my). Common family terms include ‘bà ba’ (dad), ‘mā ma’ (mum), ‘gē ge’ (older brother), ‘jiě jie’ (older sister), ‘dì di’ (younger brother) and ‘mèi mei’ (younger sister). Chinese makes a clear distinction between older and younger siblings.

谈论家庭时使用所属结构“我的”。常见家庭称呼包括爸爸、妈妈、哥哥、姐姐、弟弟和妹妹。中文很明确地区分年长和年幼的兄弟姐妹。

To describe people, use ‘hěn’ (very) before adjectives, even when you would not say ‘very’ in English. For example, ‘Tā hěn gāo’ means ‘He is tall’ – the ‘hěn’ is required to link the subject and adjective. Common adjectives are: gāo (tall), ǎi (short), piào liang (pretty), shuài (handsome), cōng míng (smart).

描述人物时,在形容词前使用“很”,即使英语中不说“很”。例如,“他很高”意思是“he is tall”,这里的“很”是连接主语和形容词所必需的。常见形容词有:高、矮、漂亮、帅、聪明。

  • 我家有四口人。– Wǒ jiā yǒu sì kǒu rén. (There are four people in my family.)
  • 我的姐姐很漂亮。– Wǒ de jiě jie hěn piào liang. (My older sister is beautiful.)

5. Common Verbs and Sentence Structures | 常用动词与句式

Basic S-V-O word order is the same as English, which makes simple sentences easy to build. Key action verbs at this level include: chī (eat), hē (drink), kàn (watch/read), xué xí (study), wán (play), mǎi (buy), qù (go), zuò (do). The verb ‘shì’ (to be) is used for linking two nouns, while ‘hěn’ is used for describing adjectives.

基本的主谓宾语序与英语相同,这让简单句子容易构建。该阶段的核心动作动词包括:吃、喝、看、学习、玩、买、去、做。动词“是”用于连接两个名词,而“很”用于描述形容词。

The negative form uses ‘bù’ before the verb for most cases, except ‘yǒu’ (have) which uses ‘méi’. Remember ‘bù’ is usually pronounced with a fourth tone, but it changes to second tone before another fourth tone.

否定形式在动词前使用“不”,但“有”使用“没”。记住“不”通常读第四声,但在另一个第四声前变为第二声。

  • 我吃苹果。– Wǒ chī píng guǒ. (I eat an apple.)
  • 他不喝咖啡。– Tā bù hē kā fēi. (He does not drink coffee.)
  • 我没有弟弟。– Wǒ méi yǒu dì di. (I do not have a younger brother.)

6. Classroom Objects and Instructions | 教室物品与课堂用语

Classroom Chinese will help you follow lessons and interact with your teacher. Learn the names for stationery: shū (book), bǐ (pen), qiān bǐ (pencil), xiàng pí (eraser), chǐ zi (ruler), shū bāo (school bag). Most classroom items can be pointed to with ‘zhè shì’ (this is) and ‘nà shì’ (that is).

课堂中文能帮助你跟上课程并与老师互动。学习文具名称:书、笔、铅笔、橡皮、尺子、书包。大多数教室物品可以用“这是”和“那是”来指代。

Teachers often give instructions using simple verbs: kàn (look), tīng (listen), shuō (speak), dú (read), xiě (write). The polite form adds ‘qǐng’ (please) at the beginning. Understanding these commands is vital for taking part in class activities.

老师常用简单动词发出指令:看、听、说、读、写。礼貌形式在前面加“请”。理解这些指令对于参与课堂活动至关重要。

  • 请打开书。– Qǐng dǎ kāi shū. (Please open your book.)
  • 听老师说。– Tīng lǎo shī shuō. (Listen to the teacher.)

7. Food and Drink | 食物与饮料

Food vocabulary connects directly to daily life. Start with staple items: mǐ fàn (rice), miàn tiáo (noodles), shuǐ guǒ (fruit), jī ròu (chicken), niú ròu (beef), yú (fish), chá (tea), shuǐ (water). When ordering you can use ‘yào’ (want) or ‘xiǎng yào’ (would like).

食物词汇与日常生活直接相关。从主食开始:米饭、面条、水果、鸡肉、牛肉、鱼、茶、水。点餐时可以使用“要”或“想要”。

Expressing likes and dislikes is an essential skill. Use ‘xǐ huan’ (like) and ‘bù xǐ huan’ (dislike). The structure ‘wǒ xǐ huan chī …’ is a pattern you will repeat often. You can also add degree adverbs like ‘hěn’ (very) or ‘fēi cháng’ (extremely).

表达喜欢和不喜欢是一项基本技能。使用“喜欢”和“不喜欢”。“我喜欢吃……”这个句式你会经常用到。还可以添加程度副词,如“很”或“非常”。

  • 我喜欢吃面条。– Wǒ xǐ huan chī miàn tiáo. (I like eating noodles.)
  • 他不喜欢喝茶。– Tā bù xǐ huan hē chá. (He doesn’t like drinking tea.)
  • 我非常喜欢水果。– Wǒ fēi cháng xǐ huan shuǐ guǒ. (I extremely like fruit.)

8. Colours and Clothing | 颜色与服装

Colours are adjectives that are easy to practise and visually memorable. The most common ones are: hóng sè (red), huáng sè (yellow), lán sè (blue), lǜ sè (green), bái sè (white), hēi sè (black). When using a colour before a noun, you can often drop ‘sè’ and add ‘de’: hóng de píng guǒ (a red apple).

颜色这种形容词容易练习,视觉上也便于记忆。最常见的有:红色、黄色、蓝色、绿色、白色、黑色。在名词前使用颜色时,通常可以省略“色”并加上“的”:红的苹果。

Clothing items combine well with colours to make descriptive sentences. Key clothing words: yī fu (clothes), kù zi (trousers), qún zi (skirt), xié zi (shoes), mào zi (hat), wà zi (socks), T xù (T-shirt). The verb ‘chuān’ means to wear.

服装物品与颜色结合可以组成描述性句子。关键服装词汇:衣服、裤子、裙子、鞋子、帽子、袜子、T恤。动词“穿”表示穿。

  • 我穿蓝色的裤子。– Wǒ chuān lán sè de kù zi. (I wear blue trousers.)
  • 她的裙子是红色的。– Tā de qún zi shì hóng sè de. (Her skirt is red.)

9. Daily Routine and Time Words | 日常作息与时间词

Describing your day involves time expressions and sequence words. Start with the general time: zǎo shang (morning), shàng wǔ (late morning), zhōng wǔ (noon), xià wǔ (afternoon), wǎn shang (evening). Place these at the beginning of the sentence or after the subject.

描述一整天需要使用时间表达和顺序词。先掌握大致时间段:早上、上午、中午、下午、晚上。把这些词放在句首或主语之后。

Common daily verbs include: qǐ chuáng (get up), xǐ liǎn (wash face), shuā yá (brush teeth), chī zǎo fàn (eat breakfast), shàng xué (go to school), huí jiā (go home), zuò zuò yè (do homework), shuì jiào (sleep). String these together with ‘rán hòu’ (then) or ‘xiān … zài …’ (first … then …).

常用日常动词包括:起床、洗脸、刷牙、吃早饭、上学、回家、做作业、睡觉。用“然后”或“先……再……”把这些动作串起来。

  • 我早上七点起床。– Wǒ zǎo shang qī diǎn qǐ chuáng. (I get up at 7 o’clock in the morning.)
  • 我先刷牙,再吃早饭。– Wǒ xiān shuā yá, zài chī zǎo fàn. (I first brush my teeth, then eat breakfast.)

10. Question Words and Making Inquiries | 疑问词与提问

Asking questions is crucial for conversation. The main question words are: shén me (what), shuí (who), nǎ lǐ / nǎr (where), shén me shí hou (when), zěn me (how), wèi shén me (why), jǐ / duō shao (how many/much). Notice that in a Chinese question the word order does not change – you simply replace the answer part with a question word.

提问对会话至关重要。主要疑问词有:什么、谁、哪里/哪儿、什么时候、怎么、为什么、几/多少。注意中文问句词序不变化,只需把答案部分替换为疑问词即可。

‘Jǐ’ is used for numbers under about 10, while ‘duō shao’ is for larger numbers. The particle ‘ma’ turns any statement into a yes-no question; just add it at the end. Another pattern uses verb-not-verb, such as ‘yǒu méi yǒu’.

“几”用于大约10以下的数字,“多少”用于更大的数字。语气词“吗”可以在陈述句末尾直接构成是非问句。另一种句式使用“正反疑问”,如“有没有”。

  • 你叫什么名字?– Nǐ jiào shén me míng zi? (What is your name?)
  • 他是谁?– Tā shì shuí? (Who is he?)
  • 你有几本书?– Nǐ yǒu jǐ běn shū? (How many books do you have?)
  • 你喜欢咖啡吗?– Nǐ xǐ huan kā fēi ma? (Do you like coffee?)
